    Astral Chain consists of varied genres, but is mostly an action game, which has great ideas and interesting, relaxed humour, that doesn´t spoil its serious plot. [Issue#298]

    Platinum Games shows its luster with an awesome hach 'n slash videogame that powers up the action genre with a great combination of elements: exploration, investigation, puzzles and even some platforming gameplay. A great exclusive title for Nintendo Switch owners.

    Astral Chain is a wonderfully fun and ambitious action title with a great gameplay hook that improves the more you master the basics. It’s yet another example of why PlatinumGames continues to be one of the best in crafting a unique action-adventure hack-and-slash.

    This review has largely been gushing, but I want you to know that Astral Chain isn’t perfect. The non-combat side of the game is often fairly pedestrian and the story can be pretty overwrought even if it is largely told in a knowing, tongue-in-cheek manner. With that noted, this is absolutely a worthy successor to Nier Automata – and like that game, Astral Chain is definitely a contender for one of my favourite games of the year.

    It's tough not to consider Astral Chain something of a small disappointment, especially when you know Platinum Games' talent for beat 'em ups. We not only highly commend the fight mechanics in this latest title from Takahashi Taura, but also its universe — original and supported by a high-class artistic direction. However, the overall game is pulled down somewhat by a structure of missions that doesn't match the studio's desire to mix the beat 'em up and investigative genres, and further by large approximations and other technical problems — all of which have a significant impact on the enjoyment of the game.

So here are my pros and cons so far before I write down my verdict. If you are looking for some feedback to decide weather or not to buy it yourself, here are my thoughts.

    Pros:
    - stunning graphics and visuals
    - awesome soundtrack
    - very unique and fun game mechanics
    - complex combat system
    - very action packed but not the typical buttom masher
    - great eye for details in the surrounding world
    - the city feels very much alive
    - interesting story
    - great and epic boss battles

    Cons:
    - 30 fps
    - most sidequests are boring

    Verdict:
    The true nature of this title is a wonderfully made action game. It has everything I asked/hoped for and even more.
    The boss battles are well directed and challenging. The city feels very much alive and the scenery is just beautiful and eye-pleasing.
    To me this game is one of the best games I've played in a long time and I hope for a sequel.
    The only downside I can see is the 30fps the game is running on. While I dont recognize it all the time, on rare occasions I had the feeling that I saw some frame drops but it was really minor.
    If you are into action games and loved Nier:Automata and Bayonetta, you for sure will love this game to death.
    Iif you asked yourself if you should buy this game, at least I can highly recommend it at this point of time.    … Expand

    Platinum games did it again. Wonderful action and investigation gameplay, great setting with strong 80s/90s anime and cyberpunk vibes

    The controls are a little clunky when you first start using your legion... it takes some time to get used to. The game is very heavy-handedThe controls are a little clunky when you first start using your legion... it takes some time to get used to. The game is very heavy-handed with its cinematics but it sets the stage very well... the very beginning is very exhilarating keeping you on your toes (even when you take your time trying to do everything). all in all, it is a very good game... not a 10 out of 10 but very close IMO

    I wish I could give it an 8.5 instead of a 9 but if I had to choose I would rather go higher than lower on the score.    … Expand
