Games Master UKWe can recommend the multi-player experience, but if you'll be playing it single-player, there are far better platformers out there. [July 2006, p.60]
-
It does progress into an average platformer and a good attempt at a new direction for the series, but average it still is. There are better PSP titles to be bought and played first.
-
While the game has a lot of solid concepts, a ton of stages, and some pretty good “boss” fights, (if you even want to call them that) the game sadly suffers from a horrible camera and just annoying challenge; and in the end, the experience isn’t memorable by any means.
-
PSM2 Magazine UKNot as good as a regular "Monkey Ball" game would've been. The adventure stuff feels tacked-on and the PSP's rubbish analogue stick makes control a bit of a nightmare. [July 2006, p.110]
-
games(TM)Despite the bright colours, cute simians, jolly music and overarching joyous abandon, Super Monkey Ball Adventure is a tremendously difficult videogame. And phenomenally frustrating to boot. [Aug 2006, p.130]
-
Official Playstation 2 Magazine UKLike the PS2 version, this is a needlessly complex and frustrating barrel of monkey malarkey. Only the mini-games rescue it. [Aug 2006, p.99]
-
Traveller's Tales has perverted Sega's previously charming action puzzle series into a clumsy, frustrating action adventure game.
-
Past Monkey Balls have let players select puzzles from a menu. Adventure only offers sets of puzzles ranked by difficulty. Get stuck on one, and there's nowhere else to go.
-
Play UKIt's just there to make you angry with its dodgy controls and even dodgier level design. [Issue 142, p.80]
-
The fundamental gameplay created by the 'monkey in a ball' mechanic simply doesn't work within the confines of an adventure title.
-
Ambitious and frequently entertaining, but ultimately too frustrating for its own good.
-
BoomtownThe Challenge and party modes are the redeeming features, but they’re only the side dishes- and the main course will leave you with a particularly bad taste in your mouth.
-
Slightly better controls, slightly worse framerate and equally blah adventure and mildly distracting party games leave this just as middle-of-the-road as the PS2 version. But hey, at least it's the same thing only portable, right?
-
SMBA's biggest flaw is that it expanded the scope of the series' traditional gameplay without retaining its laser-like focus on solid game design.
-
The always fun monkey balls rolls onto the PSP, but this time disappoints us with uneven gameplay, dull environments and lack of challenge.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineThe challenge mode makes up for a lot of the shortcomings, since it offers great, classic monkeys-in-balls action that fits perfectly with the PSP's portability, but sadly, it's not enough. [Nov. 2006, p.124]
