The racing is very much arcade-style and straightforward, and at no time did I have any trouble winning every race in the Story Mode, but it was still a highly enjoyable experience. The “feel” of the driving mechanics was on point and the drifting physics were very satisfying. It’s a little surprising this game isn’t talked about more; it’s the definition of a hidden gem. It gets so little attention, that I had trouble finding any information or videos about the PSP version anywhere online. And that’s something to mention: The PSP version is not the same as other versions that were released on other consoles. The game has a Story Mode that consists of 16 different races with 4 one-on-one challenges. During each race, your goal is to win (obviously) where you’ll collect Stars as well as finding 6 hidden Spanners (wrenches). The Spanners act as currency where you can buy upgrades to your car that you’ll need to unlock other parts of the game. Those other parts are called Postcard Events. Since I had no instruction manual and there was nothing online about this game, I wasn’t sure why the Postcard Events weren’t unlocking as I progressed through the game. It took a while, but eventually I figured out those upgrades you buy for your car with the Spanners you collect are used to open different pathways on each track where you come across a hidden camera that takes a photo of your car (i.e. a postcard photo). In total there are 17 Postcard Events which are further broken down into 4 different challenges: a straight-up race, a drifting challenge, a time challenge, and a hitting cones challenge. Needless to say, this game has a ton of content to include a section called Mater’s Tall Tales which are a couple of mini-games not to mention unlocking new car characters and alternate paint schemes. The developer put a lot of time and thought into this game and it’s a shame it’s almost a forgotten gem. Like I said, I’ve never seen the movies nor am I a kid, but I had a blast fully completing this game, collecting all the Spanners (some were a real chore to figure out where they were), and unlocking all the content. It’s been one of my most satisfying video game experiences, and I hope more people discover it someday.… Expand
