At first glance, our hero Angus seems to be as dim as a glow worm's armpit, but to save the world he has to get from his cozy couch and get his guns in row, he is our only hope. Though the situation looks like a pretty straight forward run and gun scenario Angus has to make a lot of tactical choices along the way. He also has to choose his weapons with care, you never know when you run out of bullets.
Angus hates Aliens is all about reaction and tactical choices against a plethora of different enemies. Every enemy and every situation requires Angus to think about specific approaches making this game more tactical than your usual shooter.

Minis can run on a PSP, Vita, Playstation TV, and PS3 but somehow it didn’t really become a popular platform. Probably because they didn’t have trophies. Well there is a new Mini and it’s called Angus hates Aliens and it is pretty good despite having a name with a unnecessarily lower case “H”.

Angus hates Aliens doesn’t have the control scheme you think it would. The left and right shoulder buttons shoot left and right respectively allowing you to shoot while moving backwards with the inability to shoot up or down. You will shoot backwards in this game a lot as it plays very much like a classic survival horror game despite not being scary. Just like a classic survival horror games you will hoard ammunition and use it only when necessary because the random drops will often not provide enough for you to miss a lot of enemies. There is some light inventory management needed and some weapons to upgrade with collectables that adds some simple strategy to the game and is a lot of fun.

The game runs well on the Playstation TV and the graphics are 16bit beautiful. The music is repetitive but adds to the experience of trying to invoke a shlock alien invasion movie. There is quite a bit of content for $7 albeit repetitive as it slowly adds new enemies and repeats bosses. You will quickly develop strategies for the new alien type introduced and will continually repeat the strategy throughout the game. The difficulty spikes up and down wildly throughout the experience. A good tip is to do multiple saves so you can go back a few checkpoints to stock up on ammo and health packs. Luckily you can save anywhere at anytime.

Overall, I think Angus hates Aliens is a unique game with a lot of value for $7. This is a great portable game to play in spurts on a Vita but nothing you want to play for hours. Maybe the Playstation Mini platform will be reenergized by the death of Playstation Mobile? Nah, still no trophies.
