    I admit that after time has taken its toll on this game that it is a bit hard to go back to now with all these new great games out. However, Xenogears still is my favorite game of all time. I enjoyed the story greatly and once you figure out the combat system, it was one of the most fun of its time. Better than the regular turn based stuff from old rpgs.

    This game could have been the best RPG of all time. It's a real shame the developers ran out of funding and had to rush the second part/disc of the game. Still with all of it's flaw the story is so incredible and the combat is so amazing it puts this game as the second best RPG of all time for me.

    Greatest storyline of all time!!! It makes all of the RPG's out there appear childish and trivial. This RPG is a game changers and it will not leave you without pondering the events that unfold within its chapters. I will rest my case with this..... There is nothing else on the beaten path (videogame plots / RPG's) that can touch this masterpiece. People that don't get it, are eitherGreatest storyline of all time!!!     What makes a game great? It's not it's flaws, where xenogears have many, it's not the fact that it's dated by the time I played it in 2005, it's not the graphics or the great voice overs. A game is only great if it's memorable, and when you look back all these years you still remember fondly certain aspect of such a game that you can't get out of your mind. Xenogears is one such rareWhat makes a game great? The storyline, the characters and the soundtrack and the overall feel I had upon completion of the game makes me look past the frustration, the grind, the seemingly rushed pacing towards the final third of the game, for all those many flaws about the game, I felt fulfilled, emotionally and mentally attached to one of these rare masterpieces of our time.     There are very few games that deserve a 10, and this is one of them.

    Not many games and game companies are brave enough to tackle the tip of the iceberg psychology, philosophy, and spiritual concepts - especially in one game. These aspects of the game alone give it a complex story, and to add to it's appeal, there are also concepts of love, class wars (floating city vs. land dweller),    There are very few games that deserve a 10, and this is one of them.

    Not many games and game companies are brave enough to tackle the tip of the iceberg psychology, philosophy, and spiritual concepts - especially in one game. These aspects of the game alone give it a complex story, and to add to it's appeal, there are also concepts of love, class wars (floating city vs. land dweller), the age-old gear piloting conundrum, and so much more.

    The battle system is turn-based, and allows for upgradable moves based on experience in addition to the traditional equipment upgrade aspect. The other component of battle is an alternate in-gear fighting (and travel) mode which contains a different set of techniques and upgradable moves and gear equipment altogether. Two battling systems in one, each with their own complexities, attributes, and magic.

    The characters are easy to relate to even though the story may seem complex at first. It has the traditional "find out where you came from to uncover the story" starting point of now classic, and forgotten RPGs, and each character has a deep and personal back story. The story takes twists and turns and the game has a high standard of replay value because the story takes time to understand. It is clear that the story was developed and written carefully.

    Additional details include a card game that can be played as a continuing mini-game, hidden locations, and additional minigames including fighting championships and gear battles.

    This and the Xenosaga series are the most deep and intricate plot lines I have every experienced in a video game, and I have played pretty much every game that is known for having a good story. Couldn't recommend more.

    If I had to write a review of this game in one word, will be wonderful. The people who created this game were very intelligent or maybe so stupids, because they talk about religion!!!! they had balls to created this game in 1998. Amazing game.

    Not going into great detail but it's been my favorite game since I've played it and hasn't been beaten. A great story and fun unique gameplay. It tried more to be good than to be different and focused on the story and characters than the leveling system.

    If you down vote this game then you grew up after the ps1 was the top console.

    this game was easily one of the best games of its time. rarely can i replay a video game, xenogears, skys of arcadia, fallout 3 and ff7 are the only games i ever replay.

    It may seem antiquated to give a review to a PS1 game in 2013, but this game needs more credit. The story is simply put amazing, I will make no more mention of it. The gameplay involves playing as Fei Fong Wong, Citan, Elly, amongst others, stacking button combos and building up "deathblows", which are stronger moves to put away enemies (Like Triangle/Cross would activate one, and soIt may seem antiquated to give a review to a PS1 game in 2013, but this game needs more credit. The combos are limited to how much AP you have on a certain character. This works similarly once you get into the Gears, or what some people know of them as Mechs. I just found this game a very good experience. Although its not for everyone, I would highly recommend it, as you get a really good story, good gameplay, and characters you can actually feel for, even through the very abyssmal Second Disc of the game, where everything feels rushed, but it was still a pleasant experience to end the game.… Expand

    when i played the demo of this game long ago i know this game was gona be some thing special and had to have it day one . i couldnt believe how great a RPG i was gona be playing .     The best game I've ever played. I played it back on 1998. It is 2012 and still the best game of my entire life. Good plot, nice graphics, incredible combat system, long duration and much more.

    Fantastic character development. Deep and thought provoking story. Amazing use of camera angles. Squaresoft baked a very unique RPG "recipe" for this title. Think 'mature-Kung-Fu-anime-style- action-RPG with all the usual Side-quests and what not Although the story is delivered rather slowly, I find it gives you more time to be drawn in to the abundance of details and the cinematography.Fantastic character development.     I just replayed Xenogears a few months ago. The first disk is great. Things become extremely complicated and a bit extreme when the second disk hits, and it moves extremely fast. There were budget issues that turned the second half of the game into what it was.
    But the gameplay is amazing, the characters are interesting, the story is engaging, Xenogears is everything you want an RPG to    I just replayed Xenogears a few months ago.     But the gameplay is amazing, the characters are interesting, the story is engaging, Xenogears is everything you want an RPG to be. The game is huge compared to modern games, and even many other RPGs of it's time.
    Imo, they could have ended the game at the first disk and it would've been a 10 anyway, so I won't detract any points for some of the short comings of the second disk.

    One of my absolutely favorite games of all time. A compelling story-line, top-notch music, interesting combat mechanics, and captivating characters make this an RPG worth taking a look at. Do yourself a big favor and pick this up, it's a classic in my book.

    The Depth this game tried to aim for was amazing, sure the story got convoluted at times and 'slightly' confusing. But that's what you get when you try to pack in half a dozen key philosophical ideas. What in philosophy isn't confusing?
    Still for me trying to understand it is what made me like this game so much and probably rate is as my favorite game of all time.

    Truly a labyrinthine epic that is worthy of being called a tour-de-force of storytelling in virtually any medium. Xenogears is a cerebral, esoteric, and possibly didactic masterpiece possessing sci-fi and fantasy tropes embedded with the use of intricate philosophical, psychological and religious themes.

    The story is something else entirely. Combining nearly every trope in the game, the plot is like a mix between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Final Fantasy VI. It aims to analyze various religious, psychological, and philosophical theories with its anime-like characters and their adventures. While VERY confusing to understand the first time, Xenogears' manages to create one of the most amazing tales ever told in all of media. The game will most likely require a few play-throughs to understand all of the messages, but it is very rewarding once you do.

    My overall opinion of Xenogears is great. I consider Xenogears to be one of the best RPGs of all time, plotwise, and I do not rate lightly. The plot draws you in and keeps you playing even when it gets confusing, and the music pulls at your emotions. The only thing I could possibly ask of this game is more; more cut scenes, and more depth to the battles. Also, the majority of the game is contained on the first disc, and so little is done with the second disc that the game should have had more in it spread over both CDs.    … Expand

Better than Final fantasy VII and especially the VIIIth, Xenogears has the best story ever told in a video game. "Astonishing," "amazing," "emotional," those are superlatives that lends itself perfectly to the scenario of Xenogears. Never the notion of history and(my score is 9.5) Xenogears is not a game.     The pace is not the best granted and maybe that could be fixed on a remake and the anime sequences are unnecessary as well. They did not connect well with the game.

    This game cries for a remake, leave everything intact just change some interface and graphics respecting the original artstyle, it just dont look so nice now, that problem has plagued MOST ps1 games, at least the ones that use polygons or zoom effects like xeno.     My favorite Japanese role playing game ever. I had so much fun. Squaresoft was epic in that period. In my opinion the story is better than FF7 which is my second favorite JRPG ever

    Simply put this is the best game of all time IMO. The story is amazing, the music is awesome, the character development is great, the fight sequences and leveling up is great. The only bad thing is that it was not funded well and rushed but overall amazing.

    One of my most beloved old PSX games. Spent hours and hours on this, maxed out all of my Gears, and maxed out my manly adventuring party's gear as well. I still have my 'Creid' Xenogears soundtrack and game soundtrack, to boot.

    My only regret is not being able to wipe my memory so I can play it again fresh.

    This is easily my pick for best turn based rog of all time. The combat system is amazing , the story is really deep, and it has one of the best soundtracks in gaming. I ALWAYS recomend this game and will continue to hope for a remake

    To me, this is by far the best game ever made.

    It had revolutionary game-play for its time, and an amazingly timeless soundtrack. The story is in my opinion the most epic story in any medium, which spans over 15,000 years, and delves deeply into philosophy, psychology, and religion.

    Please make a remake.

    This game has the best storyline of all Square RPG games for me. I first played it when I was 13 years old and didn't understand everything, but the story is awesome and full of details you need to dig in to understand. Even it's graphics are very old, I still like to play it nowadays to remember what a good RPG must be.     One of the most impressive JRPGs ever made with an amazing complex storyline with many twist, good characters and villains and great world design. Just sad that Square at the time decided to rush the 2nd half of the game and we ended up with those *chair scenes* which end up downplaying the feel of the game and cutting about 20 more hours of gameplay down.

    This is by far the best story I've ever seen in any game. Congrats to Takahashi for making such an incredible work. It didn't stop blowing uo my mind. Every time I played, the story only got better and better. Extremely complex, extremely deep. A masterpiece.

    Un sobresaliente(9) que pudo alcanzar la perfección(10) de no ser por su segundo disco, maldito presupuesto. El primer disco de este juegos es magnífico, la mejor historia vista en un videojuego por mi persona, pero es que además tiene una jugabilidad muy entretenida para un jrpg de aquella época y los pjs carismaticos, la musica brillante , un juego perfecto a la altura de los mejores FFUn sobresaliente(9) que pudo alcanzar la perfección(10) de no ser por su segundo disco, maldito presupuesto. El primer disco de este juegos es magnífico, la mejor historia vista en un videojuego por mi persona, pero es que además tiene una jugabilidad muy entretenida para un jrpg de aquella época y los pjs carismaticos, la musica brillante , un juego perfecto a la altura de los mejores FF y de los mejores juego de la historia. El problema viene cuando llega el CD 2 y se les acaba el presupuesto y el 90% del juego se basa en leer y pasar imágenes, sin embargo esto no quita que sea totalmente recomendable y su historia sea magnífica de principio a fin.     Боевая система так же разительно отличалась от того, что многие привыкли видеть в jRPG от Squaresoft, вся механика была закручена на комбо ударах и используя эти комбо, герои выучивали новые способности и удары, на удары тратилась энергия и поэтому за ход можно было скомбинировать ограниченное кол-во ударов.

    Но и это не все, в игре был второй вид геймплея - бои на роботах - Гирах. Энергия заменялась топливом и была не восстанавливаемой в отличие от выносливости.
    Снаряжение нужно было собирать не только для своей партии, но и для каждого Гира.

    Выражать какое-то конкретное мнение по поводу этой игры очень сложно. Она огромна, вся её история разворачивается на протяжении
    10-ти тысяч лет и сама игра охватывает лишь 1/6 этой истории и является пятым эпизодом.

    У игры имеется 200-страничная книга-артбук под названием
    "Perfect Works", которая посвящает не только в мельчайшие детали этого мира, истории королевств и другое, но так же разбирает психологические портреты персонажей, еще более детально поясняет мотивы и многое другое, что находится за пределом понимания смертных мира Зэногирс.

    Эта игра является одним из главных примеров того, почему игры это искусство. Она рассказывает великолепную историю, полную не только боли и мучений, но так же радости и веселья. Она показывает, что не бывает злых людей, бывают разные точки зрения. Она показывает, что игра одновременно может быть серьезной, но при этом иметь много черного (и не только) юмора. Она на протяжении игры рвет всякие шаблоны, меняя сеттинги и подбрасывая все новые и новые сюжетные повороты
    (что станет в будущем ключевой особенностью Xeno-серии).

    Она так же яркий пример того, как излишняя амбициозность и желание сделать огромнейшую историю может все загубить, что и случилось с этой серией и что случится еще раз в дальнейшем с Xenosaga.

    My favorite game of all time. Best story I've ever been lucky enough to witness in the most original and in depth sci fi-fantasy world I've ever seen. The gameplay was also very original for the time considering it's a turn based RPG...Somehow you really feel satisfied with each attack. Also, there are mechs...some of the coolest mechs I've ever seen by the way. And somehow, there's aMy favorite game of all time.     It's a 10, hands down. That said, here's my reservation: if not understanding the story the first time through this LONG game will significantly bother you, Xenogears is not for you. The tale's complex, approaching convoluted, but grappling with it, I believe, is well worth it.

    Xenogears has become one of the greatest experiences I’ve had with games in the last years. I could start this review talking about the gameplay, combat mechanics, and things like that (and I will do it later), but really, the story is what Xenogears is all about. I have no doubts that this is among the biggest, deepest and most incredible video game stories ever to be made, if not theXenogears has become one of the greatest experiences I’ve had with games in the last years. I could start this review talking about the gameplay, combat mechanics, and things like that (and I will do it later), but really, the story is what Xenogears is all about. I have no doubts that this is among the biggest, deepest and most incredible video game stories ever to be made, if not the most incredible of them all. I’m not going to spoil details of the plot, but it could be summed up as a ten thousand year conspiracy to resurrect a demiurge-like ‘god’.

    Instead of talking about plot details, it is easier to understand the greatness of this story if you see a list of the themes it covers, including religion, spirituality, human consciousness and psychology, mind control, use of drugs, classism, child abuse by priests, war, conspiracies, shadow governments, manipulation of history, sheep mentality and oppression, experimentation on humans, genocide, eugenics, politics and propaganda, racial supremacy, slavery, torture, death, trauma, love, friendship, among others. I was pleasantly surprised to see the level of maturity that this game has. Xenogear isn’t shy about bringing controversial topics to the table. And this makes the story incredibly engaging, at least in my case, as I’m interested in many of the topics I listed before, and I don’t see them being portrayed by many other video games. At least not in a coherent and interesting way.

    That’s another strength of Xenogears’ story. All of the topics I named before are weaved into the plot in a very coherent way. None of them feels shoehorned without making sense. This is a proof of how expansive and ambitious Xenogears’ story is. In fact, Xenogears was planned to be a 6 part story, and the actual game is only part 5. But thanks to stupid Squaresoft, only 1 game was allowed to be produced, and most of the story was put on a single game. As a result, playing the game for the first time can be a little confusing. For all this reasons, I suggest you to take a look at the Xenogear wiki or the official book ‘Perfect Works’ every now and then, to understand the story a little better.

    Even though the technical limitations of the hardware, Xenogears always tries to be a highly cinematic game. There are plenty of memorable scenes and dialogues. The characters are all well portrayed and show a significant development during the course of the story. All of them are very relatable, and have fleshed out personalities. The antagonists are excellent, and a proof of this is the fact that in the end, you kind of feel empathetic for all of them.

    The game world is also one of Xenogear’s strenghts. It is wide, open and pretty varied. I love how the cultural, political and religious differences between every society in this world are portrayed. Xenogears does an admirable job at creating atmosphere for its locations too. It is very easy to get immersed in places like Bledavik, Shevat or Nisan, to name a few. Not every location is on the same level of quality, but overall a strong atmosphere and good level of detail is present in most of the locations, especially those from Disc 1.

    Story aside, let’s comment about the gameplay. If you enjoy classic JRPGs, Xenogears will provide you 60+ hours of good entertainment. But the reality is that the gameplay isn’t particularly stellar. It is overall ok, but it has some really nasty low points here and there. First of all, random enemy encounters are extremely frequent and irritating. Of course, you can escape from most of them, but it’s still highly annoying. Another pretty weak point of the game are dungeons. Some of them are good, like Solaris’ labs and Babel Tower, but some of them are a pain in the ass, especially the Anima Dungeons from Disc 2 and its ridiculous puzzles.

    This is definitely a game you’ll want to play with a guide at hand. It will help you have a better experience overall. And also, it prevents you from missing parts of the story, like the Zeboim flashbacks at the end. These are some of the best scenes in the entire game, and they’re completely optional and pretty hard to stumble across without a guide.

    I wish I could go into more detail, but (ironically) just like in the case of Xenogears itself, I have a deadline to meet (5000 characters), and I have to abruptly conclude this analysis. I could talk about the inconsistency in pacing between Disc 1 and 2, about how the game totally feels rushed in Disc 2, about the incredible soundtrack that is now among my favorites of all time, about the combat system (which is pretty good, but nothing really outstanding), and many other things. But the final message I want to say, is that despite it’s flaws and inconsistencies, Xenogears is a gem among video games, with an incredible, deep, epic story that will stay in your mind for a long time after playing it.

    The game is very well directed and the cinematography is amazing ! It feels like the team at Squaresoft were fond of Stanley Kubrick. The camera work is always surprising ; The long shots, the perspectives, the slow panning, the dynamic camera angles, the zoom-ins, the attention to composition, contrast and colors. I could go on and on... Xenogears really is a work of art !

    Whoever can't handle this game's epicness and interminable story-telling most likely can't handle reading Frank Herbert's Dune. (I often compare the two) ; The dialogue is dense, the story is convoluted and some cut-scenes really drag on... As a matter of fact, the cut-scene that transitions between Disc 1 and 2 lasts about 1 hour !!

    The music is some of the finest ever produced for any videogame and the ambient sounds (birds, waterfalls, wind, etc.) complement very well the locations our heroes visit throughout the story. I highly suggest playing this game with a proper 5.1 Surround Sound setup ; it adds an impressive amount of depth and naturalism to the world of Xenogears, which is already full of life and charm.

    The 3D rendered world makes up for its (a lot of people whine about this) outdated graphics. I wonder what happened that people can't enjoy a game anymore if its graphics aren't hyper-realistic... Why don't we just go ahead and repaint the Mona Lisa because people find that it looks too outdated ?! NO !! Just enjoy it as it is. Xenogears is an absolute masterpiece !! It reminds me of a friend of mine, he never could for the life of him watch Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, just because it was shot in black and white... smh...

    p.s. Not only does Xenosaga and Xenoblade have nothing to do with the story of Xenogears, they both lack the essence that made the original a classic. Don't confuse them and don't compare them ; Saga and Blade can't even dream of being as good as Gears.    … Expand

    when i got the game, i was met with the opening scene. i was both mesmerized and anxious. i remember feeling extremely bored after playing FF7 for about 10 hour, feeling the combat was to slow and laked any fun. I was nervous from the start knowing that this game was also turn based. i was surprised and relived that the combat based of of FF7 with a mix of 2d fighting combos that made the combat flow rapidly and provided good rewards for the time put into combat.

    the story is the best part about this game. it is extremely hard for me to describe the emotions i felt while playing this game. It is truly mind bending and awe inspiring. It is truly the best story square soft have ever produced.

    The games worst elements are that the second disc is a complete shift from the well paced first disc, and the game is easily one the the hardest games i have ever played. This game is the definition of old school tough

    I found some of the combat elements irksome. The main one being how you heal your gear. It is one of the more annoying mechanics I've experienced and is very inconvenient. This became an issue in the lengthy dungeons and later battles. Other complaints are questionable design choices (like collecting 3 books to advance), scripted battles, and tedious dungeons (mainly in your Gear). Thankfully, some dungeons include a map, which is a lifesaver.

    I had not played a JRPG in many years. Despite my gripes, this game renewed my passion for the genre within a few hours. With its intriguing story and beautiful soundtrack, this is a game that will be hard to forget.    … Expand

    The original Xenogears was the best. Xenogears was the pinnacle of the Xeno-series. Since then, the Xeno franchise has gone downhill becoming the mess that is now Xenoblade Chronicles. I will miss Elly and Wong of the original Xenogears. They were a cute and passionate couple. Only wish we could hear more of their story.

    Mejor historia de Sci-fi en videojuegos hace referencias a películas y libros para entenderlo mejor, así mismo su jugabilidad para el tiempo es excelente sobre manejar robots y estos luchen con artes marciales parecido a las películas de Bruce Lee o Fei Wong Hung.

Considering that second disc was rushed so the game could even be released, the greatness and epicness of this game is stunning. Imagine a proper remake with big budget for it.     I became a better person through the time I spent on this journey. Though I have no doubt that such a statement may elicit eyerolls, I stand firmly behind this sentiment. I have ever experienced a work of art in any medium that has such command over symbolism, the collective unconscious, and existentialism. It -quite impossibly- accomplished being a tight character-driven experience while simultaneously being a story about everything (the creation of our world notwithstanding).

    I recall how elated I was when I first discovered this game as a young man inspired by Jungian psychology and existential philosophy. I had never believed that a video game could be so profound and reach for such depth; if you're looking for evidence to mount your "games as art" narratives then this is it. The brilliance of Xenogears does not stop with its story however. Tetsuya Takashi himself said in an interview that he felt his vision had failed to come together towards the end of development, until he heard Yasunori Matsuda's score for the game. The music of this game evoked religious feelings at times, speaking directly to the heart in a way that game mechanics and technical prowess never could. If you're still here with me then pause momentarily and listen to "The treasure which cannot be stolen" and read the comments section (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1hrtCC-QWw). Having spent 90 hours over the course of 2.5 years with this game, this theme still evokes chills in me with each listen. Themes like "The valley where wind is born" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCw05TquWik) bring a profound sense of sentimentality, youthful hope and wonder, as though waking up to the sun rise on a misty morning in the Italian countryside.

    I must restate here that my journey with this game has been unequivocally one of the greatest experiences of my life. Xenogears brought me in closer contact with myself and my sense of wonder in the world and I am a better person because of it. While watching the credits roll last night as a 26 year old, I shed a tear and thanked Takahashi and all of the dreamers who worked on this project. I discovered Xenogears when I was 24 years old (also, I've never owned a PS1 so this review is not influenced by nostalgia in any way I am able to be aware of) and was undergoing a tremendous period of growth and transformation. I took my time and savored this game, taking long breaks to dream about what would come next; this game was always in the background, serving as a place of inspiration and wonder. I had delayed fighting the final boss for several months, dreading the end of this beloved journey. Last night I felt within me that it was time. Seeing the credits meant more than finishing another videogame; I had closed what has been the most important chapter of my life. I recently applied to graduate programs in psychiatry, inspired to follow the path of figures like Jung, Karen Horney, and the great thinkers of the soul that inspired this very game. Completion of Xenogears signified an acceptance of the passage of time and a commitment to the very next chapter of my life. Xenogears gave me the courage to leave the darkness in my past behind, to follow my dreams and pursue what my soul had been calling for.

    I have never written a review in my life before this; if Xenogears gives you a fraction of the meaning it gave me then I will be happy with the work I've done here :)

This was long before I got to using the internet, but I found an imported copy for sale in town - for the princely sum of £60 (I don't know what the exchange rate was then, but I'd wager I paid at least $100 for it).     I think the best RPG ever on PSX and maybe even on PS2. The story is something amazing, the use of toons instead of computer graphic for the interludes is simply perfect and give lot of "pathos" to the story itself. A pity that Squaresoft didn't make a PAL version. If you didn't buy it, hurry and don't wait a second more.

    el sistema de combate esta muy bueno y pese a ser muy variado es fácil de usar, solo el de chrono trigger podría competir contra el. los gears también son entretenidos de usar y esta bien pensado su sistema de combate pero creo que me quedo con la de los personajes.
    la música es conmovedora y preciosa a la altura de cualquier final fantasy.
    los gráficos son decentes pero se nota que no le dieron tanto presupuesto, esta falta de presupuesto se nota cuando juegas al disco dos y te cuentas algunos sucesos en vez de mostrártelos, lastima porque con mas presupuesto este juego hubiera sido perfecto, o por lo menos para mi.

It starts off decent and nosedives extremely hard later on, with the second disk being almost exclusively text about God being a computer system that is cluttered with all kinds of pseudo-intellectual themes. What started as a decent game with martial arts turn-based combat and some mech parts (wasn't a fan of mechs ever, thought that the martial arts style would do it for me here though going into it) turned into this pseudo-philosophical mess that moves at a snails pace that resembles an otaku's mashup of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' and 'War and Peace' than an RPG game with any sort of appeal or charm to it. It gets a 3 because the first few hours I had fun with Xenogears and did enjoy playing it, but like noted above, it quickly takes a turn to pseudo-intellectualism and loses any sense of pacing and plot progression it may have had in the first 25% of the game.… Expand

    This game has a lot of charm and I wanted to like this game, but dear god this game was so ridiculously long and slow, I couldn't finish it. Put a ton of hours into it though. Wasnt that fun either. It could have been a masterpiece if they condensed the plot.

This is very jarring especially in situations with certain characters that should sound intelligent or domineering, yet they just come across sounding like idiots or children. Now at worst, the grammar and punctuation is simply wrong, and this makes it apparent that the game is unfinished. Many times I actually had more fun laughing at the errors than reading the dialog. It's bad. On top of that, the plot is crammed full of elements that only serve to prolong the story unnecessarily, with many interactions being incredibly verbose, repeating things that have been said already and making characters seem stupid. That goes to the poor translation I suppose.

    Speaking of unfinished. The game is unfinished. The entire second disk is entirely changed in presentation and told like a story rather than played, which is all well and good because if it were like the rest of the game, it would be another 40 hours and to be honest it was dragging on given the games other deficiencies.

    What is good about it? I think that the game was ambitious, and had an interesting premise for a plot. The graphics are crisp and hold up even today. The music has several tracks that I really liked as well.

    I recently replayed Xenogears in it's entirety because I didn't finish at a kid, however it unfortunately proved painful to get through. There are plenty of other games from that era and even earlier that are still terrific and I can definitely enjoy playing again and again, but this isn't one of them.    … Expand

    But reality is no if, today's SE is more unlikely to remake this game, even HD is unlikely, after all, free to others to advertise this kind of thing, a company is impossible to do.

    In addition to this combination of 3D and pixel, the bad level of graphics performance really does not stand the test of time. The exploration perspective is terrible, the main line of advancement only hints and is very obscure. The small animations are very ghostly and not smooth at all.

    Gear combat is boring and fuel management system in my opinion is probably the worst mechanic in Xenogear. I almost never used ether in this game, because it almost never did any difference, and physical combos always hit harder.
    Non gear combat seemed fun at first, but got boring pretty soon, because after you learn a few deathblows it just comes to repeating them again and again, because there's no reason to use weak attacks.
    Playing as different characters seemed like a cool idea, but in the end it comes to leveling up only main characters, because they are the ones who take the beating most of the time so have to be strongest.
    Many people praise music. After 50 hours, I vaguely remember any tunes from the game, even though they repeat very often.
    Yes, plot is interesting, though too complex at times even for me as an adult. Cut scenes are directed well (except Disk 2 which feels like an addon). There's no option to speed up dialogues unfortunately for those who read faster than text appears.
    In the end, I wish I could get more from this game, because it has potential to be great. But it never hits each mark 100%.    … Expand

    This game is a masterpiece. It's a shame that it couldn't be finished completely. You can see how much passion and love Tetsuya Takahashi, Soraya Saga and the other developers put into it. This story was intended to be 6 Episodes long with Xenogears being Episode 5, tho we got with the Xenosaga Trilogy pretty much Episode I it is a shame that we never got the hole complete story.
