The best atmosphere ever created for a horror videogame. Inflict anguish and constant oppression without resorting to cheap horror resources such as jump-scare. We will be accompanied by a constant fear throughout the journey of Harry in Silent Hill.

Still one of my favorite games. Its, like most survival horror games of the time, way too hard. Also, extremely confusing, i never beat it as a teen because i never knew where to go and what to do. I did it later i college. The SH atmosphere is just amazing.

That first taste of Otherworld still freaks me out to no end and is possibly the most unsettling environment you'll find in a Playstation game. This is truly a fight-or-flight game, unlike many other horror-survival games (the sequels didn't do this aspect justice) and I truly feel like I'm fighting for my life. Even though he doesn't have too much development as a character, I can't help but feel myself being drawn into Harry as if I'm being put in his shoes and actually feel like I'm fighting for my life in a horrific town filled with nightmarish creatures. Plus, my favorite aspect of all Silent Hill games, are the multiple endings. This was the first game to offer multiple versions of endings and it was revolutionary. It's a horror-survival classic and no Silent Hill, or any horror game fan, should go without playing Expand

This was the first game that really gave Resident Evil a run for its money in the survival horror genre. While it followed a similar method, it also felt more open and the atmosphere was utterly chilling.

Graphically it was a little rough around the edges, even by PS1 standards, but some of the time it just added to the atmosphere. Sounds and music were just spot on, creepy as hell.

Combat was clumsy and for the most part you tried to avoid. To be honest this game did remind me allot of the first two Alone in the Dark games in this regard. Combat is a last resort, running away is the better option.

For one, it crafted an atmosphere so thick and dreadful, nothing could match it for the time. Combine this with horror that delivers through subtlety and anticipation, a complex but hidden story, and a haunting soundtrack, this first entry would undoubtedly pave its way into the horror classics.

The focus point of Silent Hill centers around its own name, the eponymous town in which the game takes place. Once a peaceful resort town now has been corrupted by demonic forces and the protagonist, Harry Mason enters the town in search of his daughter following a car crash. For the PS1 era, Silent Hill was a technical marvel in crafting ambiance because of the hardware limitations. What was once terrible pop-in as a result of the poor draw distance has been masked in darkness and fog. This design choice only served to heighten the tension when traversing the town, either running or confronting its monstrosities. The visuals do not hold up today, but they work for the game well enough and conveys enough information amidst all the low resolution textures.

I won't delve anymore into story details, but do know that it is a well-crafted story that at first seems to ride the "evil cult" schtick, but it is great at drawing in the player to learn more. The voice acting is monotone and flat and doesn't carry acceptable quality for a modern day playthrough, but the strangeness of it does exemplify Silent Hill in general. The soundtrack however is something to marvel at. The genius behind the ambient soundtrack is Akira Yamaoka, who would go on to craft the soundtrack for the other Silent Hill games. The mix of dark ambiance exudes mystery and uneasy foreboding, but when it wants to draw in the feeling of horror, the soundtrack melts into a rhythm of noises that shouldn't qualify as music, but is ever so effective at heightening the horror. It's not something to listen to on a slow day, but it accomplishes the feeling of horror like no other. The same can be said for the sound design in general. Absent are the loud crashing noises accompanied by a jumpscare, instead only subtle noises and complete silence compliment the game's different areas and it works fantastically, even for today's standards.

Complimenting the horror is the gameplay, and this is where many today would find fault with (aside from the now blocky visuals). Silent Hill utilizes tank controls which at first is frustrating, but is ultimately easy to accustom to and almost necessary to make maneuvering with the constantly shifting camera angles that much easier. The main gameplay revolves around guiding Harry Mason around Silent Hill, taking him from locations such as a hospital to an elementary school. The game really pushes the survival aspect more than its predecessor. Ammo and health items are scarce to a point where I genuinely avoided enemies as much as I could which in turn added to the tension and horror aspect of the game. Confronting enemies isn't a frustrating mess as many would make it out to be, it's simply the game encouraging you to avoid it if possible. There are boss encounters in the game, though I would describe them as the worst part of the game. They do little to serve the game's purpose other than remind me I'm playing a videogame. On occassion, Harry Mason would come across puzzles, though these puzzles revolve more around deciphering text and messages on its own context. They are well-crafted and my complaint only is that they are sparse and few in number.

Silent Hill, unlike Resident Evil, is so much more effective in horror not purely because of its seemingly arbitrary control scheme or mechanics, but how it uses them in conjunction with sound, atmosphere, and storytelling. Every monster is tied symbolically to the town and every line of dialogue isn't there to pass the time, but to hint at character motives or reveal subtle clues on the greater story at hand. It's psychological horror in full swing, and not a single mechanic is there as filter. Exploring the town is a test in itself and reaching the game's multiple conclusions is a direct result of the player's actions, not a stop in time and allowing you to choose one of two binary decisions. It respects the player's ability to beat it, and even if you find no challenge, the game's multiple difficulties surely will with the enticement of new endings and use of equipment.

Silent Hill is far from perfect. It's dated look would hardly terrify you if it bothered you throughout. The bosses do little out of the ordinary. The controls, while intended, occasionally let me down when I needed them most and is an unfortunate tradeoff for the scares to take place. The voice acting is hardly average. But Silent Hill was above and beyond for its time and impresses to me to this day. It's a classic tale in how to create horror.

Silent Hill is a superior survival horror game to Resident Evil. Allow me to explain:

Everything Resident Evil did, Silent Hill did better. Dynamic gameplay design? Silent Hill has fully explorable 3D environments, the ability to move while shooting, unique enemies, and an entire town to explore. Meanwhile, the original Resident Evil is restricted to a single mansion, has fixed camera angles (with 2D backgrounds), very few enemy types, and stand-and-shoot combat. Now, it's not totally fair to compare games that are three years apart in age, but both of these titles served as their respective franchise's debut. As for story, that's really subjective. Silent Hill certainly has more depth though.

The only real gripes i have with the game are unimaginative enemy designs and shoddy voice acting. You can also get lost at times, but I kind of like not having my hand held.

And God, the soundtrack. Akira Yamaoka is a master of his craft, no doubt. HUGE mention for the "Not Tomorrow" OST. This guy alone built a certain idetity for the series when it comes to beats.

There are a few things that keep me from giving this title a higher rating, though.

For starters, I think the voice acting was overall, OK, but it certainly could've been better. There are some dialogue lines in which the intonation just felt... weird.

The game also slows down so much near the end, it had me wishing it'd just get over with it.
You basically run around an otherworldly labyrinth collecting a series of key items, and solving some rather difficult, consecutive puzzles, as you uncover a lot more about the town's secrets (which is the good part about all that).
It can be really annoying to run around with no map, nor direction for over an hour if you're not in the best of your days; which I was, by the way.

Speaking of puzzles, they're well designed, and can also be frustratingly difficult to solve; like the piano and zodiac puzzles for instance. You can feel extremely smart by solving them, yet extremely dumb for looking them up on the internet, or thinking so hard about them. They're tough, though, really.

Unfortunately, I achieved the bad ending, which was almost like a joke ending, and I didn't like that at all. It's a real slap to the face to play a game for over ten hours, just to get a stupid, sarcastic ending as a reward. It should've been just straight bad.
You might argue I should've explored the game more, but I tell you, I really did. Actually most, if not all of the ending's requirements are located at the final resort area, which is filled by monsters that wouldn't leave you alone for a minute.
I still ran towards every corner and looked for every spot I could explore, but unfortunately I missed the requirements. I wish the game was more clear as to what items or actions could change the ending; it's all very non-intuitive.

I'm not a fan of multiple endings anyways, I pretty much prefer a solid finale as to what really happened, but I can appreciate what this game offered for it's time.

I'm glad I got to experience this classic. While not my favorite horror game, it is still a respectable horror nonetheless, and its heavy atmosphere and psychological pression stays with me even after I beat it.

To me, this was a VERY GOOD game.

This game is an horror classic.Good storyline, good gameplay and puzzles, and opcourse this game scares the hell out of you since the begging to the end.The only reason i gave this game a 7/10 is because the graphics are bad (even for its time) and the controls are stiff.

Although I'm happy to say that this incredible franchise's first game is indeed amazing, I'm also a bit sad to see how outdated it gets as the years go by.

I have to start saying that Silent Hill is probably one of the most unique game I've ever played. It's definitely not its sequel, but it's definitely one of the most remarkable games of its time. It may be outdated and rough around the edges but it's undeniably original, effective and essential.

Silent Hill 1 made me feel dreadful - but In a good way.
The main reason for this is atmosphere and sound. Few games actually got me this tense and unsure of my actions quite like this one.
The town is well-modeled and feels like an actual ghost town, environments are not pre-rendered and that might be the reason why it's all so strange and foreboding, characters are mysterious and creepy, enemy design is good, it's short with an INTENSE pacing, replayability is highly encouraged and the mood is just perfect.

Like I've said before, atmosphere and sound were key.
It's an astonishing work of sound design and ambience. Even if the game had no combat, SH's tone and oppressive music itself would've been enough to make you sweat.
The story also helps a lot. It's grotesque and often heavy. The mystery set from the start kept me interested until the end and although I feel like it could've been handled a lot better, I was craving to know more even after the credits rolled.

With all that said, I have to be honest: the game does not hold up.
Sure, it is great, but it BEGS a well done remake.
Combat is downright painful, movement is stiff to a fault, puzzles can be very overcomplicated and enemy placement is just bad! Traversing SH's foggy envrionments should've been spooky, but the amount of enemies chasing and hurting Harry at ALL TIMES breaks the vibe. At least until you enter a place like the hospital or school. In fact, this is probably the main reason why I wasn't scared at all during these moments. Just upset.

The story's also something that felt a bit underdeveloped in my opinion. It starts off great, but fails to explain essential plot points and fill the blanks. It's something that I felt that could've been easily fixed, with a few more notes or cutscenes, but instead it becomes a puzzle of its own in the end.

As previously said, Silent Hill 1 is unique. What I've experienced here or in its sequence is something that I haven't experienced in other games.
It didn't age well and if you want the full story you'll probably need to Google it, but I'm pretty sure that you'll love it anyway. It's a fantastic survival horror game and one of the genre's most original.

Good for the time. Definitely isn't very scary in hindsight compared to the sequels and the sewer level feels very "gamey". It does end up breaking the immersion quite a bit for the latter part of the game.

    1. Story
You play as a 32 year old man named Harry Mason. Out on a vacation with your daughter, Cheryl, you are suddenly involved in a car accident on the outskirts of a town called Silent Hill. You awake unconsciously from the wrecked vehicle to discover your daughter went missing after the crash. As you search the streets looking for her, you begin to notice how deserted the town really is. Something is not right in Silent Hill, but the only thing that matters to you right now is your daughter...
Silent Hill (video game) is filled with history. And it's the mystery behind it that will quickly have you attached. However, by the time you complete the game, there will still be a lot of unanswered questions that leave first-time-gamers confused. The first game's story lacks backbone. And the only way to correct it is to look up the history online, or play future instalments of Silent Hill. It's possible that some questions weren't meant to be answered during the game's creation - but whose to say?

    2. Voice Acting
The voice actors & actresses were great in their performances, but the editors must have taken one-too many coffee breaks. Characters in this game will speak in a single sentence or two..... and then pause every 2 seconds.... "Did you know that my daughter...... is still out there somewhere? ..... I need to find her....." Expect speech pausing to happen often.

    3. Graphics and Visuals
These graphics are nothing fancy, but will get the job done. The most important thing is that it must have you believing in it, and there's a mix of both here. The best comes from your own character's animations, while the worst comes from trying to figure out what doors in the town you can actually open.

    4. Gameplay
Gameplay refers to survival horror, and the various puzzles you solve during the game. Put it all together and it's average!

    -Survival-Horror-
In this game, your ammunition is limited, so your survival horror instants have to kick in if you want any chance to survive. There is not enough ammo to kill everything in the game on normal difficulty, so you're gonna be running away from a few battles. When you are battling, controls are perfect in responsiveness. Remember that Harry is a middle-aged man with no combat experience before the story, so it matches really well. Combat uses your standard weapons like handguns, shotguns, things one is familiar with. It also has melee weapons, though not recommended to use those unless you're freakishly good at the game. When using a gun, bullets have a have a chance of missing your target the further away you are from them. Even at 20-foot range with the gun pointing straight at them, bullets can still fly diagonally. So it's a good idea to get as close as you can without getting hurt before you unload that bad-boy. The enemies will start off extremely basic, but it's still recommended to save as much ammo as you can because the enemies later will give you a run for your money.

    -Puzzles-
These puzzles were taken overboard in terms of difficulty. There's no balance here. When you have to use an FAQ or a guide just to get through a section, you're not playing the game, and that hurts it's value. I'm talking about first-time players here, and not veterans who already know everything. These can be ridiculously hard, and not everyone had an internet back then for the instant answer. Konami fails at designing a decently challenging puzzle.

    5. Soundtrack
The only thing you'll remember is the static from your radio, and whatever the awkward screeching in the background Konami calls music. Not convinced? Search up the ost for this game and listen. It will have those with sensitive ears bleeding within a minute. There is hardly any music here for phrasing.

    6. Personal Enjoyment
When it was time for combat or to dodge/avoid enemies, I did have a lot of fun. It's got story, and it sure has survival horror. But it doesn't have anything else. The replay value is low, and it's mainly because of the amount of running around you have to do. I spent 7 hours trying to beat this game because I couldn't figure out what doors were open-able. No doubt that there is potential in the franchise, but it isn't with this game. Silent Hill fanboys are free to down-rate this review, but everything I've said is still true.

    7. Overall Verdict
The final verdict is a 6 out of 10 - slightly above average. Unless horror is your main genre and you're in to some really freaky stuff, there's not really a whole lot of reason to come back. Only buy if you're a curious cat.

Silent Hill crafts a wonderfully tense, delightfully unsettling horror atmosphere thanks to the sum of its parts. The foggy, abandoned town feels quiet and vast, rewarding exploration with plenty of resources, weapons and optional content, whilst simultaneously feeling claustrophobic and dangerous thanks to the various neverending hostile creatures lurking within the city. Hidden by the thick layer of fog that permeates the map, an unnerving sound cue alerts the player of their presence when nearby, imbuing the whole experience in a constant state of creeping danger. Alas, this atmospheric terror doesn't translate very well in combat, with only a handful of enemies posing a real threat, as well as severely lacking, bland boss fights. Nonetheless, the journey remains overall enjoyable thanks to interesting environmental puzzles and charming riddles that require an engaging level of lateral creative thinking. The story, a gritty blend of visceral human drama and real supernatural demonic concepts, is narrated in a cryptic manner which adds to the obscure mood of the game, and unveils its twisted secrets through multiple ending with different requirements, but most characters are not interesting or explored nearly enough to make their tribulations really impactful.

Imagine some cottage cheese dumped out on the sidewalk for 20 years. That's how well this game has aged. It was probably good when it came out, but it's a chore to play now.

But from what I saw in an hour the horror level is laughable. Nothing was there to create horror. Everything about this damned game created annoyance. Expand

From the inexplicable sobbing of an unseen child in a blood-stained school hall to the loud rattling of an invisible "something" underneath the floorboards that you're standing on, the game never sinks into predictability. Imagine all of this while never quite being able to see past arm's length into the darkness.
