Before I played this game I thought things like Dead Space and/or Resident Evil games were freaky, then I figured it was about time I played Silent Hill games. I started with Homecoming, which wasn't really all that great, and then I figured I should start from the beginning and work my way forward - so I found it online, bought it, and found myself successfully freaked out. The visuals alone are groundbreaking. It's like a well-shot movie and a nightmare at the same time, and, though the mysteries are explained in later games, I was never completely sure what the hell was going on in the town in the first place prior to my playing of other sequels. The game resembles a psychological, nightmarish experience as perfectly as a game can - and the crappy graphics of the late 90s helps with this effect. Also, though many may complain about the difficult controls, I think they helped add to the experience and desperation of certain situations. Even now the effects of this groundbreaking game can leave you on the edge of your seat, and though it isn't an easy game to find (unless, of course, you're able to buy it on PSN, which I haven't checked to see if it's available), you should definitely consider it. Excellent in every way. Claustrophobic camera angles, the Kafka-esque fog, and distorted enemies wandering the streets all contribute to this games scariness. Nothing freakier than playing this game at night and hearing the dreaded air-raid siren that signals your descent into the nightmarish Otherworld.

The awkward camera angles, dialogue and graphics are rather annoying but Silent Hill isn't without it's scares. This makes the Resident Evil series seem corny. Silent Hill is also very rare now. Anyway, Silent Hill is briliant and I love every newest instalment.

The game is a must play for horror fans, but keep in mind this is an old game and some aspects of this game haven't aged well, mainly the controls and graphics. The controls and graphics just take a little getting used to, I played this game on my PS3 and recommend playing this game with the D-pad rather than the analog stick just because the game is easier to control with the d-pad. I really don't have any complaints about the game, other than an irritating sound glitch that occurred every now and then when I used a gun where the game would make a horrible screeching noise until I left the area where I fired the gun. The glitch didn't occur often and may just have been because I was playing on a PS3. If your a horror fan and haven't played this game you really should. So get a copy of this game, lock your doors, turn off the lights and get ready to be scared. Expand

Silent hill is the definition of survival horror. limited resources, chilling ambience, fear of the unknown, great atmosphere, well executed jumpscares, and most importantly, psychological scares. I have never came across a game that made me question my own sanity, such as the time where you enter a bathroom and you come out in a different hallway, or the part in the hospital where you check all the 3 floors in the elevator and you come back to find a fourth floor. this game is a masterpiece, a survival horror gem. but if you are not a survival horror fan, then you probably wont like this game at all to be honest Expand

Silent Hill is one of those video games with a fantastic elements and story of a town that people describes it's hell. One of the games you must play today in case you have still kept your PS1, a classic, horrifying and one of survival-horror's best.

Silent Hill is a superior survival horror game to Resident Evil. Allow me to explain:

Everything Resident Evil did, Silent Hill did better. Dynamic gameplay design? Silent Hill has fully explorable 3D environments, the ability to move while shooting, unique enemies, and an entire town to explore. Meanwhile, the original Resident Evil is restricted to a single mansion, has fixed camera angles (with 2D backgrounds), very few enemy types, and stand-and-shoot combat. Now, it's not totally fair to compare games that are three years apart in age, but both of these titles served as their respective franchise's debut. As for story, that's really subjective. Silent Hill certainly has more depth though.

The only real gripes i have with the game are unimaginative enemy designs and shoddy voice acting. You can also get lost at times, but I kind of like not having my hand held.

    1. Story
You play as a 32 year old man named Harry Mason. Out on a vacation with your daughter, Cheryl, you are suddenly involved in a car accident on the outskirts of a town called Silent Hill. You awake unconsciously from the wrecked vehicle to discover your daughter went missing after the crash. As you search the streets looking for her, you begin to notice how deserted the town really is. Something is not right in Silent Hill, but the only thing that matters to you right now is your daughter...
Silent Hill (video game) is filled with history. And it's the mystery behind it that will quickly have you attached. However, by the time you complete the game, there will still be a lot of unanswered questions that leave first-time-gamers confused. The first game's story lacks backbone. And the only way to correct it is to look up the history online, or play future instalments of Silent Hill. It's possible that some questions weren't meant to be answered during the game's creation - but whose to say?

    2. Voice Acting
The voice actors & actresses were great in their performances, but the editors must have taken one-too many coffee breaks. Characters in this game will speak in a single sentence or two..... and then pause every 2 seconds.... "Did you know that my daughter...... is still out there somewhere? ..... I need to find her....." Expect speech pausing to happen often.

    3. Graphics and Visuals
These graphics are nothing fancy, but will get the job done. The most important thing is that it must have you believing in it, and there's a mix of both here. The best comes from your own character's animations, while the worst comes from trying to figure out what doors in the town you can actually open.

    4. Gameplay
Gameplay refers to survival horror, and the various puzzles you solve during the game. Put it all together and it's average!

    -Survival-Horror-
In this game, your ammunition is limited, so your survival horror instants have to kick in if you want any chance to survive. There is not enough ammo to kill everything in the game on normal difficulty, so you're gonna be running away from a few battles. When you are battling, controls are perfect in responsiveness. Remember that Harry is a middle-aged man with no combat experience before the story, so it matches really well. Combat uses your standard weapons like handguns, shotguns, things one is familiar with. It also has melee weapons, though not recommended to use those unless you're freakishly good at the game. When using a gun, bullets have a have a chance of missing your target the further away you are from them. Even at 20-foot range with the gun pointing straight at them, bullets can still fly diagonally. So it's a good idea to get as close as you can without getting hurt before you unload that bad-boy. The enemies will start off extremely basic, but it's still recommended to save as much ammo as you can because the enemies later will give you a run for your money.

    -Puzzles-
These puzzles were taken overboard in terms of difficulty. There's no balance here. When you have to use an FAQ or a guide just to get through a section, you're not playing the game, and that hurts it's value. I'm talking about first-time players here, and not veterans who already know everything. These can be ridiculously hard, and not everyone had an internet back then for the instant answer. Konami fails at designing a decently challenging puzzle.

    5. Soundtrack
The only thing you'll remember is the static from your radio, and whatever the awkward screeching in the background Konami calls music. Not convinced? Search up the ost for this game and listen. It will have those with sensitive ears bleeding within a minute. There is hardly any music here for phrasing.

    6. Personal Enjoyment
When it was time for combat or to dodge/avoid enemies, I did have a lot of fun. It's got story, and it sure has survival horror. But it doesn't have anything else. The replay value is low, and it's mainly because of the amount of running around you have to do. I spent 7 hours trying to beat this game because I couldn't figure out what doors were open-able. No doubt that there is potential in the franchise, but it isn't with this game. Silent Hill fanboys are free to down-rate this review, but everything I've said is still true.

    7. Overall Verdict
The final verdict is a 6 out of 10 - slightly above average. Unless horror is your main genre and you're in to some really freaky stuff, there's not really a whole lot of reason to come back. Only buy if you're a curious cat.

This is by far my favourite games franchise. Silent Hill is everything the horror movies can be and they are not when we talk about fear, tension and true scary moments. I'll never forget the **** pants moments while playing Silent Hill for the first time... Silent Hill 2 is my favourite video game ever, yes, EVER. But the first one is a 10 too. Both are perfects, are great and uniques, they are all incredibly made, true masterpieces, and no other games will ever come close in subject matters, its story is incomparable. No mater what you will say about Mass Effect, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill is deeper, complex and better!

It's unique visuals and storyline create an atmosphere that even years later hold up against current video games and is stil just as scary. Set in a fog ridden town of Silent Hill, Harry Mason, a writer on vacation, searches desperately for his daughter after loosing her in a car crash. As he explores the ghostly town, he meets an intriguing cast of characters who slowly help to piece together the town's mythos as well as the mysterious disappearance of his daughter. The story is complex and fascinating, always sure to keep you 100% fascinated. As you explore through the town, Harry encounters several monsters (who honestly do look more than a little dorky) that he'll have to use all his resources and wits on to kill before he himself is killed. This is the major fault of the game: the controls. Harry is near impossible to control and walking in the way you want him to can be even more terrifying than the monsters creeping around town. The combat feels slow and clunky, which actually works well and encourages players to run rather than fight. As much as I like this mechanic, when you are forced to fight bosses and such, it becomes frustrating instead of engaging. Ignoring the few problems with the controls and combat, Silent Hill is ultimately a rewarding and interesting experience you won't soon be forgetting. Expand

Since Devil May Cry appeared in the early 2000's we have witnessed a fundamental shift over time of atmosphere to action, and whilst this may only be a natural occurance, there remains a large section of gamer's who long for something other than a screen full of gore. Even though Resident Evil is currently getting lost in its action-reboot since 4, Silent Hill - for better or worse- has for the most part stayed true to what it knows best. Unfortunately, whilst changing controls to make them more fluid may seem logical, I actually perceive this as a severe loss in gameplay. Silent Hill remains frightening and tense to some degree because of the interaction with the buttons itself. Turning around on the spot cannot for some reason recreate that. This original, arguably the best of the series has not aged well (though it has in comparison to Resident Evil)- however this has not dimmed the sheer fright and sense of dread at all. As Heavy Rain did upon its release, Silent Hill created a visceral and exciting game through its storytelling and pacing, which no other horror-game outside of the series has managed to match. Although the Siren franchise comes close to the gameplay aspects of horror, no other game has ever come close to the storytelling present here. Woven in narrative is not something you will often hear games being described these days and it is a real shame. I write this review a few weeks before the release of Silent Hill: Downpour and whilst I expect an improvement over the frankly dull 'Homecoming'- the days of old Silent Hill are over, but this will remain one of the PS One's finest hours. This was the first game that really gave Resident Evil a run for its money in the survival horror genre. While it followed a similar method, it also felt more open and the atmosphere was utterly chilling.

Graphically it was a little rough around the edges, even by PS1 standards, but some of the time it just added to the atmosphere. Sounds and music were just spot on, creepy as hell.

For one, it crafted an atmosphere so thick and dreadful, nothing could match it for the time. Combine this with horror that delivers through subtlety and anticipation, a complex but hidden story, and a haunting soundtrack, this first entry would undoubtedly pave its way into the horror classics.

The focus point of Silent Hill centers around its own name, the eponymous town in which the game takes place. Once a peaceful resort town now has been corrupted by demonic forces and the protagonist, Harry Mason enters the town in search of his daughter following a car crash. For the PS1 era, Silent Hill was a technical marvel in crafting ambiance because of the hardware limitations. What was once terrible pop-in as a result of the poor draw distance has been masked in darkness and fog. This design choice only served to heighten the tension when traversing the town, either running or confronting its monstrosities. The visuals do not hold up today, but they work for the game well enough and conveys enough information amidst all the low resolution textures.

I won't delve anymore into story details, but do know that it is a well-crafted story that at first seems to ride the "evil cult" schtick, but it is great at drawing in the player to learn more. The voice acting is monotone and flat and doesn't carry acceptable quality for a modern day playthrough, but the strangeness of it does exemplify Silent Hill in general. The soundtrack however is something to marvel at. The genius behind the ambient soundtrack is Akira Yamaoka, who would go on to craft the soundtrack for the other Silent Hill games. The mix of dark ambiance exudes mystery and uneasy foreboding, but when it wants to draw in the feeling of horror, the soundtrack melts into a rhythm of noises that shouldn't qualify as music, but is ever so effective at heightening the horror. It's not something to listen to on a slow day, but it accomplishes the feeling of horror like no other. The same can be said for the sound design in general. Absent are the loud crashing noises accompanied by a jumpscare, instead only subtle noises and complete silence compliment the game's different areas and it works fantastically, even for today's standards.

Complimenting the horror is the gameplay, and this is where many today would find fault with (aside from the now blocky visuals). Silent Hill utilizes tank controls which at first is frustrating, but is ultimately easy to accustom to and almost necessary to make maneuvering with the constantly shifting camera angles that much easier. The main gameplay revolves around guiding Harry Mason around Silent Hill, taking him from locations such as a hospital to an elementary school. The game really pushes the survival aspect more than its predecessor. Ammo and health items are scarce to a point where I genuinely avoided enemies as much as I could which in turn added to the tension and horror aspect of the game. Confronting enemies isn't a frustrating mess as many would make it out to be, it's simply the game encouraging you to avoid it if possible. There are boss encounters in the game, though I would describe them as the worst part of the game. They do little to serve the game's purpose other than remind me I'm playing a videogame. On occassion, Harry Mason would come across puzzles, though these puzzles revolve more around deciphering text and messages on its own context. They are well-crafted and my complaint only is that they are sparse and few in number.

Silent Hill, unlike Resident Evil, is so much more effective in horror not purely because of its seemingly arbitrary control scheme or mechanics, but how it uses them in conjunction with sound, atmosphere, and storytelling. Every monster is tied symbolically to the town and every line of dialogue isn't there to pass the time, but to hint at character motives or reveal subtle clues on the greater story at hand. It's psychological horror in full swing, and not a single mechanic is there as filter. Exploring the town is a test in itself and reaching the game's multiple conclusions is a direct result of the player's actions, not a stop in time and allowing you to choose one of two binary decisions. It respects the player's ability to beat it, and even if you find no challenge, the game's multiple difficulties surely will with the enticement of new endings and use of equipment.

Silent Hill is far from perfect. It's dated look would hardly terrify you if it bothered you throughout. The bosses do little out of the ordinary. The controls, while intended, occasionally let me down when I needed them most and is an unfortunate tradeoff for the scares to take place. The voice acting is hardly average. But Silent Hill was above and beyond for its time and impresses to me to this day. It's a classic tale in how to create horror.

Although I'm happy to say that this incredible franchise's first game is indeed amazing, I'm also a bit sad to see how outdated it gets as the years go by.

I have to start saying that Silent Hill is probably one of the most unique game I've ever played. It's definitely not its sequel, but it's definitely one of the most remarkable games of its time. It may be outdated and rough around the edges but it's undeniably original, effective and essential.

Silent Hill 1 made me feel dreadful - but In a good way.
The main reason for this is atmosphere and sound. Few games actually got me this tense and unsure of my actions quite like this one.
The town is well-modeled and feels like an actual ghost town, environments are not pre-rendered and that might be the reason why it's all so strange and foreboding, characters are mysterious and creepy, enemy design is good, it's short with an INTENSE pacing, replayability is highly encouraged and the mood is just perfect.

Like I've said before, atmosphere and sound were key.
It's an astonishing work of sound design and ambience. Even if the game had no combat, SH's tone and oppressive music itself would've been enough to make you sweat.
The story also helps a lot. It's grotesque and often heavy. The mystery set from the start kept me interested until the end and although I feel like it could've been handled a lot better, I was craving to know more even after the credits rolled.

With all that said, I have to be honest: the game does not hold up.
Sure, it is great, but it BEGS a well done remake.
Combat is downright painful, movement is stiff to a fault, puzzles can be very overcomplicated and enemy placement is just bad! Traversing SH's foggy envrionments should've been spooky, but the amount of enemies chasing and hurting Harry at ALL TIMES breaks the vibe. At least until you enter a place like the hospital or school. In fact, this is probably the main reason why I wasn't scared at all during these moments. Just upset.

The story's also something that felt a bit underdeveloped in my opinion. It starts off great, but fails to explain essential plot points and fill the blanks. It's something that I felt that could've been easily fixed, with a few more notes or cutscenes, but instead it becomes a puzzle of its own in the end.

As previously said, Silent Hill 1 is unique. What I've experienced here or in its sequence is something that I haven't experienced in other games.
It didn't age well and if you want the full story you'll probably need to Google it, but I'm pretty sure that you'll love it anyway. It's a fantastic survival horror game and one of the genre's most original.

In comparison with Resident Evil it is more psychology horror with a deeper atmosphere. It mastered to create an uneasy feeling of dread with fear of what might be lurking in the darkness, fog or unknown. The atmosphere, scenery and ideas were quite amazing and many games tried to copy the formula. Sadly also later entries in the franchise but I lose track. The protagonist Harry Mason is driving with his adopted daughter Cheryl to the town Silent Hill for a vacation. When he arrives at the outskirts he hardly avoids hitting a girl that was on the road and loses his consciousness in the crash. When he awakes in the town his daughter is gone and something strange is happening there. So starts the story with Harry trying to find his missing daughter while trying to find out what happened with Silent Hill. While the set up sounds a bit generic the story is really engaging and keeps you wondering what could explain this horrible nightmare. It has a fascinating haunting atmosphere that sucks you into the game. There are multiple endings to the story depending on you and one is so ridiculous funny ending that even M. Night Shyamalan will not pull it of (I recommend to read a guide for the endings as a crucial point is easy to miss and some things are far away from self-explanatory). What enhances the atmosphere is the radio which give static noise when enemies are near. This increases the paranoia and dread level. Funny sidenote: The fog which helps with the atmosphere was added because of hardware limitations. This is one of the very rare cases where the hardware limitation improved the game (Thought before that this was impossible but stand corrected). The characters work also really well. Harry is just an average person who is thrown into something that surpasses his wildest imaginations or even nightmares but also someone who will not stop to safe his daughter even when it endangers his life. The rest of the cast I wont spoil works well and I was invested in them. Gameplay wise it was finest survival horror. The ammunition and healing items are scare so that you have to make harsh decisions as you continue through the game (More on higher difficulty). There are a lot of puzzles to solve but many are just in the take the right item to the right place category (Which was not a weakness or complaint back then). However it works well and kept me returning to the game many times. Graphically it was really good for its time. Especially the sequences. I must also say that it is outdated today but that is to be expected and cant be hold against the game. The enemy design left an impact as some types from the game / franchise are still wildly known and referenced. The soundtrack is unique and enhances the atmosphere as sneakily as awesome. Clarification: I beat the game before I realized how good it was just in another playthrough. Overall this is a cult classic of the genre and a must play of its time. A lot of hard work and effort was put into and this makes the game so great. Sadly the franchise is dormant now since P.T. was forcefully canceled by Konami but there are rumors that Hideo Kojima is working on a spiritual successor. Maybe we are lucky in the next years (Would name it “Quiet Mountains” to anger Konami;-). Expand

I am most of all just blown an way how good the atmosphere and graphics still on the PS1 the weird effect an origami figure character the side makes it a bit more horrifying when you don't really know what you're looking at.

The enemy designs were terrifying and annoying which is maybe good thing because I was really trying to avoid them as much as possible.

If you're interested in playing a horror classic then this is a good place to begin.

Tenia los puzzles más dificiles en su época, y más si consideramos que en ese entonces no habian tutoriales en Youtube. De las mejores experiencias del survival horror y mi favorito.

The fog is a great way to cover technical limitations, whilst also enhancing the tension of the atmosphere. Enemy designs are all unique, as are settings. The control scheme, is difficult to get used to, however, but thankfully, advanced movement and combat are kept to a minimum. Often, combat can be avoided outright by running like hell. Two detriments were the often cardboard voice acting, particularly for Mason himself, and the boss battles. A lot of the enemies create tension through players anticipating their appearance constantly. Bosses lack that tension, as they are mostly visible from the start, and they feel far too fantastical for the rest of the game. Overall, though, a fantastic game, and a game horror lovers of any medium, and even any video game fans in general should play. Expand

Konami's answer to Resident Evil is a bizarre spooky horror game that is unnerving. This is like a Twilight Zone episode directed by Clive Barker. The surreal atmosphere is very cinematic. It's a slow-paced game, but the lore and mystery of the game is interesting. Gameplay is similar to RE and the game takes advantage of the Dual Shock controller in the way that MGS did. This is the very prime example of a classic horror game and even to this day it still finds a way to scare and make me feel nervous. If you don't have a ps1 you can also buy it through the ps3 online store, which works pretty good for a port.

Silent Hill is a really good game but its a bit difficult to play it 19 years later due to the outdated graphics. The story is relatively interesting, Gameplay is fun and satisfying as well. The puzzles can be a tad confusing as the game doesn't help you at all, but overall its a great game. Definitely worth your money.

The game is a great fundation for the rest of the sage, the level designs and aesthethics are great, and the tank control and item managment are servisable. The characters are kinda bland but really likeable(unlike most horror games). The story and voice acting could really get some work. But I see this game becoming a 9/10 for me in the future.

Silent Hill is far from graphically realistic by modern standards, but I don't recall when it was the last time I felt goosebumps playing a game. The dreaded tank controls are awkward/frustrating at first, but I got used to it... and somehow started liking this aspect of the game, to my surprise. Tense and fun, but amountful are the cheap puzzles to keep the spectator busy and artificially extend the duration of this rather short game, negatively impacting my interest in the story, since it was barely developed even after some hours invested on it. With a clear objective in mind, that is to find his daughter, Harry is notably nonchalant towards the numerous abstract life forms he encounters during his search. No matter how exemplar of a father someone is, being so selfless and devoid of the most primitive sense, fear, is humanly impossible. Nevertheless, it's one of the best PS1 games I played in terms of atmosphere, graphics and soundtrack. Looking forward to a remake, if it ever happens. Expand

Auténtico old school

From the inexplicable sobbing of an unseen child in a blood-stained school hall to the loud rattling of an invisible "something" underneath the floorboards that you're standing on, the game never sinks into predictability. Imagine all of this while never quite being able to see past arm's length into the darkness.
