One of the best video game ever. Mind blowing scenario, very mature and fun at once, great villains and heroes. There isn't one boring minute in the whole game. A true masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played MGS for the first time in 1999 and I'm still playing it. There are claims that it's the greatest game released on the original Playstation, but I disagree. It's certainly one of the best, but I can always find a reason why Tomb Raider or SOTN is better, but MGS is better in much deeper ways. Sometimes you've got to shoot an enemy shoulder in the back with a rocket launcher. You can't really sneak up on enemies in Tomb Raider and the bosses in SOTN are defeated by the same tactic of hit them more often than they hit you.

The first thing you notice in this game is the top down view that follows you for the majority of the game. The camera takes a little getting used to, and is a bit better than the set camera angles from the Resident Evil games on the PSX but not as good as it's contemporary Syphon Filter. The camera angle suits the game you play. It changes, and you can scope out your surroundings so you can plan your attack effectively once you've got this down.

What makes this game good is that there are multiple strategies of playing this game. You can choose the easy route of blasting the hell out of every enemy in sight and run through into the next area, or you can choose to dispatch enemies in a quick and quiet fashion without alerting anyone to your presence. The choice is really up to you and the game isn't any different at the end, yet playing stealth over violence is more satisfying and rewarding.

The detailed story far surpasses any other games that I've played on PSX, but the game is still flawed. The big flaw comes in the shape of Liquid Snake. This is a man you shoot down in a helicopter, you blow up in a bipedal tank, you throw off of said tank and succumbs to a heart attack all in the same night. He reminds me of Will Ferrel's character in the Austin Powers movies.

We can talk about odd parts of the game, like Psycho Mantis reading your mind, or the whole dumb Decoy Octopus character, but there are twists, backstabbing and people that just won't die. Maybe MGS 3 is the best game in the series, but this game stands alone on the PSX.

The gamplay was really ahead of its time, specailly in the first zone of the game(the one which snows a lot). Although the story is good, they really overexplain everything and i really didin't get any more out of the game besides "war bad", bu this doesn't stop this game from being one of the best games in the ps1.

You have to avoid contact with enemy guards. To your aid you have to procure equipment on-site, use your radar and call for advice via Codec (which is a little communication device). Then you also have to fight bosses and solve some puzzles. The game's story is told through cutscenes that have been rendered real-time with the game's graphic engine coppled together with the best voice actors to date. The game is short and doesn't have much replay value except playing it again. There are also two endings depending on your "playing techniques". A game on par with Half Life and World of Warcraft, just a different genre. The first time I played this game I was in awe of the story and cinematics. CODEC conversations are somewhat of a problem too, as Snake tends to be talking to himself in the middle of a highly gaurded room without the slightest thought in the gaurds head of "Why is there a man in a sneaking suit, that looks just like the guy I'm supposed to kill, knelling in the middle of the floor like I can't see him?... If you call yourself a gamer and for some reason you have not played this game, then you need to play it ASAP. And even if you have played it but it's been a while, then maybe you should play it again. :)

Its plot is riddled with philosophical and moral issues that resonate with gamers strongly in modern society, its stealth game play is intense and balances risk and reward, the challenge of surviving the odds is high but fair to players who put in effort and patience and the production values are well worth the price you pay. The soundtrack is hauntingly memorable, changing when the situation intensifies or during major cutscenes. The voice actors are very convincing, giving extra life to the characters they portray, with special mention for David Hayter's world-weary take on the veteran soldier and protagonist Solid Snake. The game offers, in addition to the short but emotional campaign, a variety of Virtual Reality bonus missions and training, as well as unlockables and secrets for playing the campaign in certain ways. If there is anything to complain about, it could be that the game's graphics haven't aged as gracefully as they deserve, and thus look dated and basic by present standards. However, to mark a game as unplayable for older graphics is a travesty. This game was the inspiration for many current conventions in its genre, and it still holds up over a decade later. Whether you're a veteran fan with an original PlayStation copy or a new Metal Gear Solid fan who's purchased the game off of the PlayStation Network, this is a game that you should be proud to own. Metal Gear Solid is a true gaming legend. 20 years on, it is still, hands down, the greatest cinematic action game of all time. No single game made me feel so alive and care so much for the characters or fear them. By the time the game ends, you will feel bloodied and exhausted (in a good way) but truly fulfilled, hopeful for the future and at peace with the past.

    10/10 feels too low.

It is truly a work of art and a defining moment in games as a whole, but it is not totally without its flaws. The controls are tight, but they lack a certain intuitiveness since the game was created in a time when controls had not yet truly adapted to 3-D environments. The gunplay can be frustrating, and much of the game has strange choices of camera angles, switching from the classic view of the NES titles to more cinematic and angled views, which doesn't lend itself to aiming a weapon. Stealth is something this game still does well, and provides a similar tension to most recent games while sneaking around. The AI can be a little sketchy and inconsistent, but they still serve their purpose.
What I have found to be the core of this title's survivability is its script and unique approach to the gamer. It breaks the fourth wall on several occasions, which highlights a certain respect and acknowledgement Kojima has with the participants of his art. While not all of the concepts within the script hit their mark on a believable scale, it is made sure that they are coherent and carry the underlying themes of war and identity. In short, it is a game that knows its a game, and celebrates it.
Though it can be gimmicky, and hasn't dated the way I always thought it would, it remains perfectly playable and engaging, often forcing me to remember a day where games were less accessible and had a more severe learning curve. While bordering the line of reality and 90s cheese, it is unapologetic. It doesn't care if you like it or not.

The Back button is for Codec, and the Start button is to pause. Firing your pistol is finicky, because there is no laser sight or first person mode. (Twin Snakes has it, but we're not reviewing that.) Now on to the story, before I delve into the story of this game, I will quickly recap the story of Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. In MG1, Solid Snake is sent by Big Boss to investigate the military base, Outer Heaven, which has been known to be creating illegal Metal Gear's, Solid Snake destroys the Metal Gear, and is confronted by Big Boss, who reveals that he is the leader of Outer Heaven. Solid Snake kills Big Boss, and escapes Outer Heaven as it explodes to bits. In MG2, Solid Snake is sent to Zanzibar Land because of reports of a new Outer Heaven, As Solid Snake investigates the new Outer Heaven, he discovers that, Gray Fox, Snakes friend in MG1, has defected to Outer Heaven. After a fierce battle against Fox, Snake finally kills him. Snake then destroys the new Metal Gear, and finds Big Boss, who wasn't as dead as we thought. Snake once again kills Big Boss, and escapes Outer Heaven. Okay, now to the story of MGS. The terrorist group called FOXHOUND, lead by Liquid Snake, Solid Snake's genetic brother, has taken over the nuclear waste facility of Shadow Moses, and is threatening to Nuke the U.S, unless the U.S send the burnt remains of Big Boss. Solid Snake is called in to infiltrate Shadow Moses, save the two hostages, Kenneth Baker and Donald Anderson. The campaign is very fun and intense to play through, full of twists and 4th-wall breaks. The graphics in MGS1 are a vast improvement over the graphics in MG1 and MG2, now in full 3D color. This game has a lot of thing to do once you've beaten the campaign and got both endings. There is tons of fun VR missions that test your skill, and even an extra disc containing a Demo for Silent Hill! This game is worth every penny of it's purchase, and you should get this great game ASAP. i'm just praying that the upcoming film adaption of this game doesn't suck. i know that Kojima is involved with the screenplay, and that's good, but you just never know. Metal Gear Solid is a classic video game that's like watching a movie while playing a game. The cut-scenes are just like a Hollywood blockbuster because of the music and camera styles, the voice acting is also good and makes it feel like you're watching a film. Solid Snake is a cool character (Also Dante in Devil May Cry is cool), the game sees Solid Snake working for FOXHOUND again and he must enter a base Antarctic base where a new Metal Gear is being made. Metal Gear REX.

It seems a group of FOXHOUND that Liquid recruited are protecting the Metal Gear, the members are: Revolver Ocelot, a master at using six-shooters, Psycho Mantis, a powerful telekinetic, Vulcan Raven, a man that is linked to the ravens and uses a huge Gatling gun, Sniper Wolf, an expert sniper and Decoy Octopus, a mysterious member of FOXHOUND.

Also a cyborg Ninja who is Grey Fox is roaming about in the base, Snake meets with Meryl and Otacon who help him out in the base while he gets codec messages off Roy Campbell and others at the submarine.

The game-play is easy to pick up since the codec messages give you the tips on how to play, the stealth and action is also great. Metal Gear Solid is a game that should be played. 10/10

There were definitely other good games for the PS1, including Resident Evil 2, FF7, etc, but what sets MGS apart for me is the level of detail and every nook and cranny of the game having so much care put into the game. If you play through other games in the PS1 lineup, you'll find messy textures, or areas where the developers just didn't bother to put the level of care. In MGS1, Kojima and his team put so much detail into creating the setting, that even individual desks were created to make each desk feel unique.

For giving me such an intense and uniquely memorable gaming experience, I give it a 10 out of 10.
