    Mask of Truth is one of the best stories I've ever experienced. It is complex, emotional, funny, and carefully paced. The localization is fantastic, the music is beautiful, the artwork is gorgeous, and the characters are endearing and well-developed. I've been gaming for over 30 years now, and Mask of Truth is one of the pinnacles of the medium; its story belongs right up there next toMask of Truth is one of the best stories I've ever experienced. I've been gaming for over 30 years now, and Mask of Truth is one of the pinnacles of the medium; its story belongs right up there next to the likes of Xenogears or Suikoden II.

    Other than gushing about the story, I should also mention that the strategy RPG aspects are perfectly acceptable, too. The battle system has been tweaked and improved from the previous game, and the main game is still pretty easy, but the bonus post-game stages are genuinely challenging and quite enjoyable.

    If you like visual novels, or even if you don't mind visual novels and are willing to give one a chance, you need to play this game. There is only one caveat -- this is the third game in a trilogy, and you need to be familiar with the first two parts in order for it to have emotional impact. The first game has never had an official release, but there was an anime series based on it; the second game, Mask of Deception, did get an English release, and it also had an anime series, but that adaptation wasn't very good. Both of the first two parts are good, but not as good as Mask of Truth. Still, they're worth going through in order to experience this game.    … Expand

    If you are playing Mask of Truth, it is probably because you were entranced by Mask of Deception, and I can honestly say to anyone on the fence: do it. If you dont like Slice of life fr the first half, watch the anime, itll be quicker, but for those looking for almost 100 hours of living in another world, feeling the whole story, and having the cathartic feeling when it ends, I recommendIf you are playing Mask of Truth, it is probably because you were entranced by Mask of Deception, and I can honestly say to anyone on the fence: do it.     I hate visual novels. I dont like reading my video games, and you dont really rate the novel on its gameplay, because it is focusing more on telling a story. I picked up Mask of Deception because it was sold to me as an SRPG. I played it and got tired of it for a while, on a whim I picked it up, and Once i finished the first few battles, I fell in love with the cast, the characters, the story, the music, the whole damn thing. It was such a fresh experience. Even the beginning which is almost all slice of life, felt engaging. The music and the writing really made you feel like you were there. When the story finally picks up though, you feel the rush coming, when the climax is at the peak, it leaves you wanting more, and that is where Mask of Truth picks up. It maintains the same music, and style of writing, which is perfect, but more of the story is shown, and It has all sorts of plot twist and turns, and each character death really made me feel something, whether it was a guy I hated, or someone i loved. I teared up multiple times during this game. Suara, (the singer of most of the vocals) does a great job on these games, in fact she also did the songs for the Anime as well.

    I highly recommend anyone who likes a fantasy style atmosphere in their anime. If you are playing this just for the SRPG elements, I would say shy away from it unless you love a good story, the battles are few and far between, but I didnt play Mask of Truth for the gameplay, I wanted to finish the story, and as this is the onyl way to see the sequel in a non manga form, I gladly shelled out the money to finish my story with Haku and Kuon. I honestly feel empty and happy at the same time, It is one of those games that you want to forget so you can do it all again. It reminds us of why we are only human, and that nothing is perfect.    … Expand

    This is the direct sequel of utawarerumono mask of deception and manages to surpass it in every way. The story is heavy, dark at times, but it's well balanced by the many comic moments and slice of life chapters. The music is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I would like a bit more content on some plot point, but from what I can tell to fully appreciate thoseThis is the direct sequel of utawarerumono mask of deception and manages to surpass it in every way. The story is heavy, dark at times, but it's well balanced by the many comic moments and slice of life chapters. The music is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I would like a bit more content on some plot point, but from what I can tell to fully appreciate those bits you should play the original utawarerumono, that sadly is only in jap.     Mask of Truth’s fights are standard SRPG fare, with grids and turns and, occasionally, teams. You don’t need to worry about learning anything too complex, which in turn leaves you more time to sift through the story. Conversely, it means that if you don’t find the story compelling, it’s not like there’s some other element here that could win you over. Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth is for diehards only, and everyone else need not apply.

    Though it still won't appeal to those who don't like reading lots of text in their games, it's amazing how much an improvement in pacing can do. Mask of Truth takes what Mask of Deception's second half had finally started to do and gives the characters and story the telling they deserve. It must be said that without the slow build-up to put everything in context and build the emotional connection between the characters, the latter parts might not have paid off as well as they did. In the end, it's highly satisfying to be able to say that across its combined fifty-hour total, the Utawarerumono duology has been a hugely rewarding experience with a story that will linger long in the memory.
