That said, 40 bucks is pretty steep for what's basically an arcade action game. To a certain breed of driver, though, the stress relief might be worth it. [Holiday 2012, p.85]

If publishers are willing to take the risk of keeping the spirit of classic games alive, it's a shame the same courtesy isn't extended to budgets and development windows. With tried and true elements combined with attractive new features, Spy Hunter is a blast throughout its meaty campaign. The fact that such a poor presentation doesn't completely hinder the enjoyment of the title speaks volumes to the strength of the gameplay. As it stands, fans of arcade-style mayhem will adore Spy Hunter, but its low rent appearance will prove a nagging reminder of missed opportunities.

Despite the crude graphics Spy Hunter is somehow addictive and really entertaining. But after all the price is a deal breaker and therefore this game is not so much a bestseller as a collector's item.

Repetitive, graphically outdated and with flawed controls, Spy Hunter is a wasted chance to finally revitalize an old cult.

This is a game that would fit better on a mobile device rather than a dedicated handheld. It's not a bad game, but it's just hard to justify a purchase at the current price point due to its lack of content.

Mixed bag: On one hand, the vehicular combat is solid. On the other, it's let down by poor mechanics and a slew of unwelcome gameplay additions.

One thing has to be said about Spy Hunter: the game is very consistent. The graphics, the controls and the way the game is dressed up; it's all consistently terrible. Save your money for a movie ticket to Skyfall or buy some 007 movies on Blu-Ray, because that'll give you a hundred times more secret agent fun than Spy Hunter ever will.

II used to love going to the arcade and running back to this game. It just had an urgency that made the game play intensity so much fun. I can't say this is an absolutely perfect revamp, but it's a lot of fun. I've gotten to really enjoy the nostalgia and the new twists are nice. Graphics look great and I just love the lineup of games coming our way to the Vita this next 2 months. Finally the season of VITA games begins !!!! :-) Expand

The essential parts of the game that make it fun are intact, but elements such as menu design, graphics and cutscenes were mediocre at best. It is a spectacular, thrilling game with lots of replay value. It's unfortunate that it didn't get the support and promotion that it deserves. How ironic that a low budget game that no one bothered to care about is actually one of the few truly fun games now available on the Vita. Expand

PlayingAs I was playing Spy hunter and finding myself, at times, frustrated with the controls or the level repetition I realized something. Playing this game made me feel like I was 9 or 10 years old again playing games on my SNES or Genesis. The controls weren't always the greatest and the levels not necessarily the most varied but I was having fun. Sometimes it was maddeningly frustrated fun, but fun nonetheless. Spy Hunter is a modern throwback to those old school games that let you have fun while seriously contemplating throwing your controller (or Vita in this case) against a wall. Expand

I picked this game up used at my local GameStop and was pleasantly surprised by the gameplay. Its a pretty game and one I am glad I picked up.

    Pros:
    -Fun mission based gameplay.
    -Unique for a racing game.
-Graphics are good (about a 7.5 out of 10)

    Cons:
-The controls drive me a bit nuts. Yes you can change up the buttons, however you can not change the reverse camera view and it is really easy to press.

Still seems very much like the original Spy Hunter in spirit even if the gameplay is different with a mission oriented structure. Expand

An awful driving/spy game with horrid controls, dull gameplay, lacklustre graphics and style.

The game itself isn’t much in the way of being a spy game other than the dialogue of the game. The game is centred around your vehicle that can change into various modes: street, off-road and boat (for water sections).

Being such a core component of the game the car is both frustrating and not fun to use. The handling is extremely floaty, with no sense of weight or control, very easy to lose control of the car.

The game features no voice acting, with the dialogue coming down to still text that randomly pauses the game. Voice acting would have really added to explaining the story. The “villain” of the game is both awful and cringy, essentially boiling down to someone who “wants to watch the world burn”, that has an unbearable “voice changer” to try and make the player feel a sense of unease but just comes across as cringy and forced.

The 23 missions get repetitive very quickly, with essentially, shoot this target, escape this thing or destroy this. It’s very stall gameplay, that gives off vibes of being a cash-in type game. Some sections have you using a UAV to select targets to destroy and on-rail shooting sections, both of which are poorly implemented. The on-rail section has awful control and no aiming reticle, so it’s very hard to aim and shoot the target accurately

The graphics are lacking lustre, with them looking straight out of an early PSP game, very disappointing as the VITA has “PS2.5” type performance, with some games reaching graphics of the PS3. Yes, graphics aren’t everything, but the graphics on Spy Hunter are so bland and generic are just not fun to look at.

Found near no positives in the game, other than the general premise of a Spy car.

Would not recommend the game to anyone, it’s boring, ugly, tedious and frustrating from start to end. Feel bad to criticise a game so harshly from what I would imagine is a small team with a small budget. But the game just isn’t any fun and should be avoided other than those looking to collect VITA games.
