    Slain!: Back From Hell is a beautiful game that presents itself in a great, self-aware way, but fails to be fun due to the frustrating level design that it throws at you right from the beginning.

    Slain lathers on the gore with gusto, and everything is covered in a heavy layer of blood and guts. On top of that, it's got a very loud soundtrack that seems like it was tailor-made to score blood splatters and exploding bodies. That's not enough to make the game worth playing, though. Slain undoubtedly gets points for having a clear vision of what it wants to be, but all that is negated by the fact that it doesn't bridge the gap between its ambition and its execution.

    Im always down for a 2D Metroidvania style game, and not bothered by brutal imagery. However, this game is so dark graphically it's almost unplayable - even in a room with minimal screen-glare potential. From what I played, it's super linear, so no Metroidvania aspect. I could deal with timing-heavy combat and bad attack animations, but the insta-kills did me in. Moving platforms or just straight-up parts of flat land will kill you in a second. You basically have to move fast and memorize. Combined with having to squint to see anything, screw this game. Maybe it gets better later in; I didn't stick around to find out.… Full Review »
