    Finally a f* good SHMUP game for Vita. Loved playing it in both Vita and PS4. It plays very well on Vita, perfect for my long work flights. Instructions can sometimes be difficult to read on Vita, but it doesn't affect the game.

    Project Root largely consists of fast-paced, shoot ‘em up style,arcade action, charging players with the task of taking out multiple targets, both on ground and in the air, while at the same time dodging a ridiculous amount of on-screen enemy projectiles. With eight unique and wide-open free-roam levels to fight through and light RPG upgradable weapons and armor to use along the way, you will take the role of rebel ace Lance Rockport who flies the F-72 Zonda hover fighter against the evil Prometheus Corporation, which seeks to control the world. And all you can do to fight back, is to keep on shooting!. The overall story is that you are the typical lone pilot "raging against the machine", that's all you need to know. Camera view is top-down with no option to pan or zoom, all you can do is turn 360 degrees, but you can't go higher or lower. But even within those limitations, the game is beautiful honestly. Graphics are sharp, detailed trees sway left-right to reflect the wind blowing, explosions of fuel tanks are huge and really have a Hollywood action movie feel to it. Controls are simple, right stick to turn, left stick to move, shoulder buttons to shoot, square button for special weapons. Easy game to pick up and play anywhere you are. The music is intense, there's an immediate sense of urgency to every level, but it flows very nicely with the theme of the game. The effects are the best I've seen in a top-down SHUMP in since the "StarDust" series. Love those explosions!. Special weapons come in the form of weapon drops, including missiles and lasers. There are also assist weapons like shields and EMPs which are all upgradable via XP Points.
    Good: constant shooting action, great effects, easy to upgrade weapons, simple controls
    Bad: ability to Zoom in/out for detail, or Auto-aim would've been useful
    Verdict: Project root, brings a whole new level of depth to the SHMUP genre. Any fan of arcade classics or top-down shooters should give this one a shot.    … Expand

    An excellent and very challenging top-down, 360 degree space-type shooter. The plot is barely there, but the challenge of taking on a wide variety of opponents, usually combining land and air elements in a pretty open and spacious area, while trying to complete (usually) destructive missions, is highly entertaining. And it is challenging, even on the lowest (Easy) setting. Enemies andAn excellent and very challenging top-down, 360 degree space-type shooter. The plot is barely there, but the challenge of taking on a wide variety of opponents, usually combining land and air elements in a pretty open and spacious area, while trying to complete (usually) destructive missions, is highly entertaining. And it is challenging, even on the lowest (Easy) setting. Enemies and projectiles swarm from all directions without much warning. It did get better once I was finally able to conquer the first (of 7) levels, which then allowed me to upgrade a couple of my ship's powers (such as speed, one of several weapons, turning speed, defense, etc.). The initial set of upgrades gives you just enough oomph and maneuverability to take on the growing number and power of enemies (and bosses) in further levels.… Expand

    As far as I'm concerned, however, no matter how interesting the concept may be, the fact the gameplay doesn't measure up makes Project Root a non-starter. Or, to be more specific, the fact that the developers didn't choose to include any checkpoints at all in a game that involves massive levels and constant death makes Project Root a non-starter for me.
