Operation Abyss is a thematically unique dungeon crawler, with some great systems underpinning it, and some of the best level design in the genre to date. And for all that, it's a real, genuine triumph.

Operation Abyss still isn't going to appeal to people who have zero interest in ever playing a DRPG. But it's enough of an improvement over its predecessor that I'd you have even a slight interest in the genre, you'll find yourself enjoying it.

For those looking for something different, Operation Abyss definitely fills the void — pun intended. Its clean art style and safe, but feature-filled mechanics make it a fun dungeon RPG outing on the PS Vita despite its contemporaries.

Worse options could be chosen these days, and while it’s not for everyone, fans of the genre looking for something new on their Vita should check it out.

Dungeon crawling fans, especially on the Vita, don’t have a lot of options, so it’s good thing that Operation Abyss has it where it counts. It’s a budget title, and it shows and feels that way in many respects, but it also has deep RPG systems and a challenging level of difficulty for those that are tired of being coddled.

Despite the fact that Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy can be a bit by-the-numbers inside dungeons, it's anything but in nearly every other facet of the game. While I probably won't be rushing to complete it again anytime soon, it was a lengthy enough adventure that will stay fresh in my mind for some time.

Solid story too, with some nice twists that made the exoerience more enjoyable. I hope NIS localize the other games in the series, too. Full Review »

Operation Abyss is a pretty good game, or it would be if it wasn't bogged down by its atrocious UI. Seriously, almost nothing in this gameOperation Abyss is a pretty good game, or it would be if it wasn't bogged down by its atrocious UI. Seriously, almost nothing in this game follows the basic rules of how the simplest of menus should work. Trying to check your status or buying items from the shop will leave you blundering around checking and trying to understand every option. It feels like Operation Abyss tried to be unique, but didn't realize in time why the UI conventions we have exist in the first place. Don't even bother trying to look in the manual for how to do what you're looking to do because you'll be sent in circles trying to understand the ridiculous jargon.
The story isn't enough for me, a serial FFWD-er, to pay attention to. The character designs and art direction are just passable, and the battle system is about as senseless as anything else.
It being a simple (aka, hard mess up) genre saves it from destruction, and it has its own enjoyable moments, but I'd say to skip it. The frustrations aren't worth it, it's too hard to *really* get into because it is so incomprehensible.
