This is a title not to miss out on if you have a Vita it's dark, cute, and funny. It's based on the Daganropa series so obviously it will has a great story, you can swap between the two main characters as a shooter or melee attacker. It's like a hybrid 3D action first person shooter visual novel in a way. Has puzzles in my opinion as an action rpg player I like them intermediate level not too easy and not too hard that you get a headache and get stuck not being able to progress through the game. Ultra Despair Girls gets it just right. I bought it at a full price after watching Youtube videos and it was totally worth it. Also, if you enjoyed the game recommend it to other players so we can support the production of Daganropa: Ultra Despair Girls 2!

So you will know what type of gamer is writing this review, I'll list three of my favorite games.

    Danganronpa
    Fire Emblem
    Atelier Totori

First, I would like to say this.. This game got some very mixed scores because of some people being offended by the content of this game. This is why I believe Game Informer gave this game a 5 out of 10. I was a little suprised to see some of the content myself. They pushed it to the limit at times.

    Anyways,

    THE GOOD:

MUSIC: Good music, hard to describe actually. Something like a teenage girl would listen to mixed in with eerieness at times.

GAMEPLAY: Gameplay was fun. Challenging at a few parts but you could change the difficulty at anytime if need be.

CHARACTER CAST: Character cast was good. The protagonist was a bit babyish at times which is understandable since she is a highschooler but it got to be a little much. Still likeable enough.

STORY: Story was good but not great as compared to the other Danganronpa titles. It lacked mystery and the plot was never mind blowing. The ending was good but it didn't live up to the Danganronpa standard. It did have it's intriguing moments though.

VOICE ACTING: Voice acted about 80 percent of the time. Voice acting is great also. Every voice fits it's character.

    THE BAD:

GRAPHICS: Graphics are interesting. Lemme say this, i believe the game designers wanted the game to look this way to make the game wierd. The cgs remind me of the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The characters look like they may have been made of playdough. This will make some ppl hate this game i know, but if you can get past this, then you will enjoy the game. The animations are different and theres about 15 minutes of animation in the game total.

GAME LENGTH: The game was 17 hours long and after completion, you unlock a book to read. Long enough I suppose but you may want to wait for a price drop, which will most likely happen soon because some of the scores hurt thier sales quiet a bit I'm sure.

Jaged legs, meaning that you could tell where the legs were shapes that had been put together. This didnt show up often but when it did, it was disturbing.

Wierd lip movement during cg's and actually didnt have any lips except for the line that would open up and close that was where a mouth should have been. Only during the cg's though. You have to get past a few things like this to enjoy the game.

Jiggy legs during cgs at times, meaning they look like they are trembling. I havnt seen this in awhile.

    IN DEPTH REVIEW:

I believe the gameplay is similar to a Silent Hill game. I've never played one of these but I've seen them played quiet often. In Ultra Despair Girls, you have a gun that can hold different kinds of ammo. Each different type of ammo has a different effect. These effects include a fire ammo that fires like a machine gun, an ammo that makes an enemy dance, thus attracting all other enemies in that area to the one who is dancing. A paralyzing ammo that can kill multiple enemies if they are standing in water and a few other ammo types are unlocked throughout the game. There are challenges and puzzles in the game. Some of these may require the internet to figure out.

They're are hidden things throughout the game inculding skills that you can equip to the protagonist that increase hp or exp gained or something along those lines. There are also hidden books which unlock a conversation. So exploring can be fun. They're are also boss fights in this game. Each one requires different tactics to beat it.
You can also upgrade your gun with monocoins obtained from killing enemies. Also, your partner can be upgraded. You can switch to your partner for a short time during battle. The partner is more powerful and doesn't take damage. The partener has a time limit so they should be used wisely as they take awhile to recharge.

There are pantyshots and a lot of sexual refernces along with plenty of perfainity.

That wraps this review up, hope it helps someone.

The Danganrompa series is the only reason my Vita isn't collecting dust at this point so I jumped at the chance to play this unique episode. Ultra Despair Girls manages to retain the quirky charm and self awareness of past, text-based Danganrompa games while mixing up the formula to include third person shooting elements. Somehow, it works. The game's personality, however, goes a long way because if this was just some random Japanese shooter I would not have liked it as much. While the ability to select different truth bullets is inspired, the gameplay here is the weakest element but it's existence is entirely appropriate given the premise. UDG features Komaru Naegi (adorable sister to D1's "average" protagonist) as she banters/battles her way through a world overrun by demonic children and of course Monokuma(s) in all his robotic glory. Many other familiar faces from the past two games appear as well. I appreciate that this game gives us a chance to encounter the apocalyptic events only mentioned in past games first hand. That alone is reason to experience this rather odd spin-off. Bottom like: if you liked those games and don't mind a departure from the interactive novel approach you will probably enjoy this game. One point to highlight: this game is a Spin off title to the Danganronpa series. In that sense, it does what it sets out to do. i.e. Vere away from the normal DR experience of previous games. This is both refreshing and disappointing.

From a narrative point of view, this game tells a great story that fits in with DR mythos and style. However, far to much emphasis is on the two lead protagonist. All the other characters are either not developed enough, or given too little focus to really matter. One of the best aspects of DR 1 and 2 were their diverse, developed characters.

Visually the game surpasses its predecessors. Each area is well done and lovingly detailed. Excellent design.

Gameplay is perhaps where this game is both good and bad. Good in the sense that the new game mechanics where refreshing and fun (perhaps a bit repetitive.) Bad in that almost all the gameplay mechanics from 1 and 2 were stripped out. While change is usually good, in this case it almost made the game not feel like DR game. Luckily the storytelling saved it in that regard.

    Overall:
Ultra Despair Girls, as a spin off title, is a fun game and a welcome addition to the DR universe. Just don't expect it to be Danganronpa 3, it's not.

It is a good game, but not for everybody, it is more story focused so there will be someone that says its boring, with that in mind, the gameplay itself is not that great, but offers interesting mechanics.

This is the only one i've played of the danganronpa series, so i can assure, you can play this one without the previous ones.

The battles are repetitive and uninspiring, it doesn't matter than the story telling stays true to its predecessors, the fact that the fighting mechanics are integral to the storyline pretty much makes it inexcusable; it becomes tiring after hours of the same point shoot point shoot point shoot. They try to mix it up a bit with varied bullets and rooms that ask for specific accomplishments but even that is let down by bad design rather than error on the player's part.

Overall this game is the weak link to a strong series, it really doesn't do this franchise justice. If you're interested in how the story line progresses I suggest reading the game's wiki to find out or even just watching the play throughs with all the fighting mechanics cut out. Don't waste your time with this game.

DAE's graphics are really good, Spike really showed up what they can do. Story is enjoyable and even I usually do not play shooter games I like DAE's gameplay. Create this game was definitely good choice and I would like to see more similar danganronpa games in the future. This is very good game but still not perfect, the game tends to be repeatable (challenges) which is a bit boring when you are close to finish the game and you already cleared about 30 of them and they all are still very similar.

The last thing you'd expect from this series is for them to mix it into a 3rd person shooter. For some insane reason, it works, really well. It's a nice blend of action mixed with that insane story we've come to know and love. If you can't wait for Danganronpa 3 (like all of us) and you haven't picked this up it's a no-brainer at this point.

That said, it's not without it's minor

That said, it's not without it's minor problems. Weird glitches and the shooting mechanics hold it back from being a perfect game. Again, these are minor problems and do not hinder the overall experience, this is still a must buy for any Danganronpa fan.

The best way I can describe this game is comparing it to another certain franchise: If Danganronpa 1 & 2 are equivalent to the Genesis games, then this entry is more like Sonic CD that originally came out on the SEGA CD attachment. This game is a 1.5 much like CD was/is, but it was released after 2. The three games in the Dangan Ronpa franchise were the sole reason I got a Vita in the 1st place. And while I would have like the cutscenes to be one visual style. (It jumps between CGI, the art style of the first two games and full-on anime). There's very good gameplay-and-story integration. Play attention to Komaru's model throughout the game if you're not sure. There are plenty of characters that should come back for either the V3 anime or Dangan Ronpa 3.

This was a odd one to me. On one hand, I really liked the TPS gameplay and the story. On the other, I wasn’t really into the characters and it only really felt like “Danganronpa” near the end. Overall still a good time, but not a game I’d replay in the near future

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is everything I could have asked for in a new Danganronpa game. While the presentation has changed the spirit has not, and at a time when the Vita struggles for new games it is an instant classic.
