As usual with Spike Chunsoft games, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is essentially a visual novel.
Expect lots of reading, but despite a not exactly "top class" translation the dialogues and writing is captivating and definitely interesting.
The pacing of the story is great, gradually ramping up until a finale that left me with my jaw open. The last part of the game is really something that must be experienced. The first game is known for its plot-twists, but the sequel blows that game out of the water. You will not expect what's going to happen, and this is good.

Having played the first game, Trigger Happy Havoc, is requirement if you want to fully understand and appreciate the whole storyline. The developers are expecting the players to be up to speed concerning the plot of the series, so do yourself a favor and get both games if you can.

The game-play of the class trials is improved this time around—it flowed better. Overall, this game is better than its predecessor. I loved the characters more, and the story blew my mind away (...and I thought the 1st game was intense).

Verdict: INSTANT BUY. This game is marvelous. I highly recommend it. A lot of people are missing out on it. Don't be that person to miss out on this game!

While the cast isn't as great as the first one, the individual cases are superior to the first one in terms of mystery, intrigue, and creativity. Overall it's a wonderful sequel to one of the best visual novel style games I've ever played.
The characters in this game are probably the weakest link but they're not even that bad. The issue was there were too many annoying characters, whether it be their voice and how they sounded, to the absolutely dumb decisions they made throughout the story. There were a few really well done characters but there weren't as many as the original game. However, one of the bad guys in this game, while a bit confusing at times, is probably one of the best characters I've seen in a long time cause you can never tell what they're thinking and that's great for a mystery game like this.
The individual stories in this game were wonderful and filled you with a sense sadness to see how things shaped out. People weren't just killing to kill like they did a few times in the past game. Alot of the cases involved in this game play out in a special way that will really make you think. I love some of the mysteries that the game presented and I feel like it's about time that some of the REALLY vague things they told you in the first game were finally explained in decent detail. While things are still kinda glossed over for the overall story in the game, this game answered alot of questions left by the first game.
In the end, this is a wonderful sequel to a wonderful game that I'm truly grateful they localized for a western release. I would say both games have their strong points but I can't rate one above another. Both are excellent and really get you involved in the mysteries they set forth. Hopefully they make another game in the series as the absolute charm that this game gives off is something that I haven't seen in gaming in a long time.

    THE GOOD:

MUSIC: Music is amazing. Very unique.

VOICE ACTING: Plenty of voice acting and every voice fits every character.

CHARACTER CAST: Great cast of characters, each unique.

STORY: Amazing story. Also has an amazing ending that only leaves a slight cliff hanger compared to Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc.

GAME LENGTH: 37 hours and there is some endgame content.

    IN DEPTH REVIEW:

The class trials have been improved over the first Danganronpa. No longer will piecing together the magna of the crime be a headache. They now tell you what is going on in each picture. So no more misunderstood pictures. Also, new mini games have been added to freshen things up.  There are fan service moments in this game. Plenty of panty and bikini shots.

This game is also closely connected to the first Danganronpa, so I don't recommend playing only this one. It wrapped up the first Danganronpa cliff hanger rather nicely. Of course you get left with a second cliff hanger in Danganronpa 2, but not as dumb founding as the Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc.

Nothing bad to say comes to mind about this game. I enjoyed every minute which is quiet rare for a game to pull off. I definently recommend this game. I would even recommend it at the 40 dollar price tag. A mind blowing experience from beginning to end.

That wraps this review up, hope it helps.

The cases are not too hard to solve if you really think about it as even in hard mode you have unlimited tries. The only things that is affected is your score. The music is catchy and compliments the drama and comedy of the game.

This game is up there with my other favourite game, Persona 4 Golden, in terms of gameplay and story. The only thing I detest about this game is the obvious exploitation of its female cast (except the bit where its important the the case). They didn't need to show skin to make this game great and it put me off a couple of times. The random shower scene was unneeded and inappropriate. The first one had no obvious exploitation and it was still great.

Still 10/10 though as I never got bored.

True, a few new mechanics were thrown in, but they feel more like extra features thrown in to give an extra challenge. They really don't change anything. It still rehashes all the elements of the first game. But to be clear, this isn't a bad thing. I loved the first game, so getting more of the same in a new setting was great, just a shame they didn't do more to differentiate it from the first game.

Visually I would have to say D2 is slightly inferior to DR1. While the environments are more colourful, they don't look as crisp and fresh as the HD PS Vita port of DR1.

I also found I liked the characters of DR1 more than the characters of DR2. The chemistry and character development in DR2 is better than in DR1, however I also felt that each character as an individual was just not as well thought out as the cast in DR1. Funny enough the opposite can be said about the cast of DR1.

The story this time round is more or less following the same path that it did in the first game and does feel a bit dull at first. But, the last act does turn everything around and dumps allot of new info on you, making it worth the wait and giving clarity to the series's overall plot.

But like the first game, this is an interactive novel, with a predetermined end. A real shame that there couldn't have been different branching story arcs. It would be a welcome change to the linearity this genre usually adheres to.

    Overall:
Dangan Ronpa 2 is about on par with the first game. Improving on somethings and declining other things. Even so, a fantastic game and series none the less and I look forward to the third game.

    Side Note:
I did not like the new Hangman's gambit. But I did like the new rebuttal argument feature. Logic Dive was OK, but felt out of place.

The gameplay is a lot more user friendly, you no longer have to go look from room to room to find people you want to talk to during Free Time. The Map is very helpful and indicates everything you need to know. Fast travel is also great and keeps the pace steady. New Skill system and vending machine is also more transparent. Class Trial has more variety.

It is a visual novel videogame which is a mixture of detective game aka murder mystery investigation and daily school life. Like in the prequel the game shines with the well written story and characters atop the interesting cases that are intense. Some describe this as mixture of “Ace Attorney” and “Zero Escape”. It starts at the Hope Academy with a new class of 16 students on their first day. The game is starts in the famous (fictional) Hopes Peak Academy school. It is the most prestige school that exists and studying there grants you great recognition and opens all doors. But there is a catch. They do not take anyone and the only way to get invited is to have an ultimate talent and get scouted. Be it sports, science, writing or something else you need to be a prodigy. There is one exception as there is a lottery for one Ultimate Lucky student which is randomly chosen out of normal students. However something strange happens as the whole new class is immediately transferred to a beautiful tropical island by a strange bunny looking mascot robot named Usami. Things get worse when another robot mascot named Monokuma appears (Players of the prequel will say uh oh here;-). They are now trapped and the only way to escape is killing a fellow student. But this is not battle royal as you have to get away with the murder undetected and there are rules that are enforced. After a dead body is found all students investigate the crime scene and after some time passes there is a class trial where the evidence is analysed and the culprit is decided by mayor vote. If they get the right person the culprit is executed. If the majority is wrong everyone except the culprit is executed. This is the setting of the game. I can copy my lines for the prequel: I especially like the writing. Everyone is caught between hope and despair while you do not know who you can trust. The story has great twists and uses the characters excellent. Everyone is unique has their own motivations and values. I could understand everyone and they avoided the traps of making anyone one dimensional. Also the voice actors are great and near perfectly chosen. The gameplay is like I said a visual novel and less a true videogame. spending time with fellow students and investigate murder cases when those happen. For the cases you collect evidence called truth bullets you use in class trials to fire at arguments (Visual system for discussions), present them and have some mini games. Those trials are intense and a highlight as the truth comes slowly out. Also Monokuma is a sadist that enjoys making your life more miserable. Maybe you will find out the truth behind everything. They improved the gameplay and trial mini games. Most improvements are really good anfd there is also a Tamagotchi like minigame. The graphics are dividing. I find them nice but they are 2,5 dimensional and look like the scenery books for children that unfold by opening it. The soundtrack is fantastic and enhances the atmosphere. Like I said the voice actors are fantastic. Overall this is like the prequel one of the best Vita games and I fully recommend it. It succeeds in creating emotional moments, has strong characters I care for and intense class trials. An easy 10/10. Expand

Of course, at the time I had no knowledge that the anime was actually based on a visual novel, and after being convinced by some positive reviews, I decided to check it out. Naturally, I proceeded to play Despair Island as the first game was the equivalent of the anime. To my surprise, it didn't just have the amusing flair of the anime it also contained a substantial amount of depth and quality. Not only was the story well-written and intriguing, but it also caught me off guard with the complexity of its murder trials. Every time I thought I knew who the culprit was but would be utterly wrong and embarrassed by the end of it. The ending of the story doesn't disappoint either, and you will be almost immediately compelled to play the upcoming Danganropa v3 game. In terms of Quality over Quantity DR2 takes the cake, but I find more of the DR2 cast unlikable, there's an annoying sadistic Loli, an annoying molest-prone Chef, an annoying fanservice magnet of a nurse, an annoying Chuunibyou guy, who admittedly gets a bit better by the end, but that's right at the end so it doesn't do much to salvage him in my mind, and Monomi. That being said, I find the rest of the cast extremely fun and enjoyable characters, characters who stick out in my mind are the most "main characters" of the cast, being the actual main character, Hajime Hinata, who seems like he'll be just as one note and self-inserty as Makoto from the first game but manages to subvert that by slowly showing more character and interesting depth than Makoto ever did that by the end, explodes into an insanely gratifying final Trial. Nagito Komaeda, who never stops being interesting from the first trial onwards, his entire character motivation is interesting and like Hajime, it culminates spectacularly in the finale. Now finally there's Chiaki Nanami, who, like Hajime starts quite uninteresting, she's the GamerTM character and she's quirky and Not Like Other Girls, but she gets much more interesting by the end, she even makes Monomi less hateable, which is a feat and a half by my metric. Aside from the Holy Trinity I just talked about, the rest of the cast are great, one of my personal favourites being Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, my favourite Yakuza after Kiryu himself, Ibuki Mioda, who is just loveable from the word "go" She's amazing, and finally Nekomaru Nidai, who is voiced by Patrick Seitz and therefore amazing. Everybody I haven't mentioned either leaves too soon to make a huge impact or is good but not I just don't have much to say on them.

The gameplay is almost exactly the same, but worse. Somehow they made Hangman's Gambit worse which is... astonishingly impressive, Logic Dive is a sh*itty Browser Game type thing mixed with answering questions, Rebuttal Showdown which is just a 1v1 Truth Bullet section only with swords, it's fine. I played all of DR1 on Normal for both mini-games and logic, but here I slapped both down to Gentle, I just found trials infuriating and nowhere is this better exemplified in Trial 4.

Chapter 4 in general sucks, it's long, the Strawberry Room of which the Daily Life Chapter takes place largely inside, is an eyesore, blazing red is a real nice colour to stare at for hours, I guess both Monokuma and the devs thought it would be a nice colour to induce murder. The actual murder in this case seems pointless and like it just takes us around in a circle, and finally the actual Trial. The Trial is terrible, from Hajime not knowing what an Octagon is to the following Question that has you pointing at a place which is not hinted at in any way and seems totally luck based whether you hit it without looking it up or randomly pressing every pixel. It's just not good and was the precipice of an extended break I took from the game because the Chapter drained the fun. Luckily the following chapter is superb. It's the penultimate chapter and the catalyst of Nagito's arc, it has several great moments, the best murder case in my mind and one of the most heart-breaking conclusions in the game and maybe the series if DRv3 doesn't top it for me. The finale is also pretty good, our questions are finally answered in some world shattering ways and it crosses over with the first game fantastically, getting to see Byakuya again was enough to make Chapter 4 worth it in my mind. The Mastermind feels like a bit of a copout and I think the final conversation lasts a little too long for it's own good, having extended periods of time spent on something that ends feeling very "what was even the point?" not unlike having to prove Kyoko isn't a ghost in the first game. But overall the ending felt satisfying and hopeful, it left me feeling good and like my time was spent well.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair has some major low points and some major high points, but I think the pro's outweigh the cons here, I just wish less of the cast was as grating as they were and Chapter 4 wasn't as tedious and stupid as it was, and making the final chapter a little more tightly written and less tangent-filled would be good too. But I don't regret my time spent in DR2, and I look forward to finishing Super Despair Girls, the anime and starting Danganronpa v3.

Didn't like it as much as the first game, but It's still an absolute masterpiece. I was enjoying it so much until the last 2 chapters, which felt weird. The reasoning behind most killings made a lot less sense than on the first game.

Even with this flaws It's still an amazing game that everyone should play.

Everything a sequel should be. While this game feels narrative feels padded, it adds more of what makes this series great all while giving us an absurd rollercoaster of a story and I loved it.

Like the first game with improved trials, an amusing and sometimes thought-provoking cast with nice themes and exciting mysteries.

Now, I know me giving this game a 10 may seem like I'm overdoing how good it is, but honestly, I really don't think I would be. From the most basic perspective, it is a direct upgrade to Danganronpa 1, with a cast similar in quality to 1, but overall better interactions and character development. The game's large increase in difficulty can also be very fun to those who want a challenge, asNow, I know me giving this game a 10 may seem like I'm overdoing how good it is, but honestly, I really don't think I would be. The game's large increase in difficulty can also be very fun to those who want a challenge, as even on the hardest difficulty, the game does not seem unfair most of the time. Also, it's a lot easier to get attached to characters in Danganronpa 2 compared to the first game, because of how much development some characters get, making how they end up much more impactful than the first game.

Overall, this is probably my favorite video game of all time, It's challenging, emotional, and still able to be humorous at times. The only real thing I can criticize about it are the, for lack of a better term, Degenerate portions of the game, but they can be looked past, because of just how great the rest of the game is, and how short those sections last.

    Genre defining classic.
Any fan of visual novels should give this one a try since I doubt you can find a better one than this. If you thought the first game was nuts, this game is **** nuts (in the best way possible). Every aspect of the original has been cranked up to eleven, crazier cast, crazier murders, and a way crazier story. Honestly it's a shame that this one didn't come first

Honestly it's a shame that this one didn't come first considering how it makes the original look like a pile of **** by comparison. I was confused when I saw the score for this game, being that it's only an 8.7, I think it deserves a higher score.

I'll admit that it's not for everyone. It's humor can be very taboo at times, especially with Monokuma and Usami's seemingly incestuous interactions(??), although this series is no stranger to incest (gladly it's never portrayed positively unlike certain other anime-styled games.) Nagito Komaeda is a super interesting character with a surprising amount of depth, but he doesn't take attention away from the other characters who are all amazing in their own way. A lot of fans of the series have a couple or so characters that they despise, but I don't understand that since I love all the characters.

Goodbye Despair is, in my opinion, the best installment in the franchise by a mile. The other games on the series fall flat in comparison to it.

The story acts as a sequel to the original Danganronpa, but it is not until the 4th/5th chapter where things really start to connect with the past game. In this game, our protagonist Hajime wakes up on an island with other 15 Ultimates. The game then follows the same structure as the past game: a killing game where you must kill someone and not get caught in the class trial.

The atmosphere is the only thing I consider to be worse than the original. The island removes the eerie vibe the school locations give, and makes the killing game feel a bit more relaxed. The investigation is on par with the original, although some more 3D environments would have been appreciated.

The gameplay is a real step up from the first game. The minigames are more challenging and complex, adding new mechanics to past minigames or revamping them entirely. The free time bonds follow the same structure, although in this game you can buy skills even if you don't max out the characters.

Speaking of characters, they are great. Like, really good. Every character in GD feels unique, even though some of them would benefit from a bit more development. The art style is also a step up from the original, featuring a more colourful palette and variety.

Overall, if you enjoyed the first game, you are going to REALLY enjoy this one.

My favourite Danganronpa game. I liked the characters of this one the most, because of the cutscenes and memorable personalities of each one of them, especially Nagito. From the opening of the game to the end, you are engaged and want to find more about the characters and what is the identity of each killer. I enjoyed the new trial mechanics which add some epicness to the game.

Danganronpa 2 looks like a niche game, but it tells the kind of crazy story that more people need to experience. I mean, who can resist a talking bear and rabbit?

Fans of Sony’s mobile platforms have been envious of Nintendo’s Ace Attorney series for years and longed for an equally good whodunit. Now 3DS users will be envious of Danganronpa 2. [13/2014, p.69]

Utterly unique and reasonably enhanced since the last outing. This is still to die for. [December 2014, p77]
