Ys X Proud Nordics is a robust and content rich re release that transforms an already strong Falcom JRPG into what may be the definitive version of Adol Christin’s seafaring adventure. With the massive Öland Island expansion, new characters like Canute and Astrid, rebalanced combat, and substantial post game modes such as Muspelheim and Ceaseless Sea, this enhanced edition deepens both gameplay and lore in meaningful ways. While the lack of an upgrade path and the requirement to replay a lengthy RPG may deter some returning players, newcomers will find this to be the most complete and satisfying iteration of Ys X, blending demanding boss design, expanded progression systems, and wider world building into one cohesive package.

Ys X: Proud Nordics feels like a greedy, poorly timed release. But it’s a vastly improved version of an already excellent game. Ys X: Nordics was one of the lesser Ys games, but the changes in Proud Nordics have now put it in the upper echelon of Ys games. There’s tons of new content, and the entire game has been carefully tweaked and rebalanced. If Ys X: Proud Nordics is a cash grab, it isn’t a lazy one. Ys X: Proud Nordics is one of the best action JRPGs ever, and a must-play for Ys fans.

Ys X: Proud Nordics is an odd duck: though it’s most certainly the definitive edition of the tenth Ys game, it’s a tall order to get someone to pay full price for a game that could’ve easily been a cheaper DLC expansion, especially if they’ve already played Ys X: Nordics. I greatly enjoyed this game myself and was thoroughly entertained by this new installment of Adol the Red’s adventures, but I’m in the position of not having had a chance to try the original beforehand. I think any newcomers to Ys X should certainly add Proud Nordics to their collection, but those who’ve already crossed these waters might want to wait for a price reduction before doing so again.

Whether you are a longtime Ys fan or a newcomer looking for a genuinely fantastic action RPG, you owe it to yourself to set sail with Adol and Karja.

Ys X: Proud Nordics is the definitive way to play Adol’s seafaring adventure with a great story alongside a strong, memorable cast and even better re-balanced combat that feels like a solid entry for new fans to get into the franchise. Enhancements, improvements, and new game modes make the latest release feel like a total package that the original should have been, but it’s a hard game to recommend to those who picked up the original, as a couple of extra hours of content is hard to justify...Ship gameplay is surprisingly fun, arcade-y and easier to explore, so much it is the best adaptation of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s naval combat. Extra side content adds a new campaign to the base game that gives more context to the Norman lore, with a huge map to explore that makes the base game’s other islands feel much more generic.

As a complete game, Ys X: Proud Nordics is among the best in the series. As a re-release, however, it leaves much to be desired.

Ys X: Proud Nordics is the same great game with extra content that adds a lot of value and rewarding challenges for those who master its memorable seafaring campaign. It may have released a bit too soon but what's here is excellent stuff regardless.

Ys X: Proud Nordics is the definitive way to experience Adol and Karja's maritime adventure. The massive quality-of-life improvements to ship navigation and the rock-solid performance on current hardware elevate the already excellent Cross Action System to new heights. While a slow opening and a somewhat grind-heavy rune progression system keep it from sheer perfection, the thrilling combat, phenomenal soundtrack, and stellar character dynamics make it a must-play action RPG. A truly epic voyage that respects the legacy of the franchise.

Ys X: Proud Nordics isn’t a revolutionary reinvention of the series, but it is the most coherent and streamlined Ys in years. The maritime system works, the duo combat deepens the formula, and the build options give players more control than ever. The story is solid, but it lacks the emotional high point of its strongest predecessors. The combat is refined, but not limitless. The re-release is the best version, but not an automatic upgrade. What remains is an action RPG that almost never loses its rhythm. And sometimes that’s exactly what a series needs: not a revolution, but a sense of direction.

Ys X: Proud Nordics delivers the definitive experience, boasting a masterful Spanish translation, significantly improved graphics, and enhanced combat fluidity. While new content seamlessly integrates into the narrative, its full-price release without an upgrade path for original owners is a notable misstep. Despite this, and some lingering narrative pacing issues, it stands as the ideal entry point to the franchise.

Another great entry into the long-running series, Ys X: Proud Nordics is highly recommended, provided you haven’t played the original. For those who have, there just isn’t enough new content to justify paying full price.

There’s no doubt that Ys X: Proud Nordics is a great action RPG. Featuring a stellar story and fun combat, the action never gets dull. The new story content and gameplay additions are great, although veteran fans will have to decide if they want to replay the game this soon again. However, whether they dive right in or wait a while, the good news is that Proud Nordics will be delivering a fantastic experience once they pick it up, as it’s the definitive version of Nihon Falcom’s latest RPG.

Ys X: Proud Nordics delivers Adol's definitive journey featuring dynamic combat, memorable bosses, and naval exploration within a world full of new content. This version expands the experience with an additional narrative and a challenging dungeon designed for veteran players who have finished the main campaign. However, the game suffers from excessively similar linear environments and common opponents that make the battle rhythm less exciting over time.

Compared to the original release, the Sandras now also boasts a faster travel speed while on the high seas. Apart from that and the new island of Öland, there is also the new post-game Muspelheim dungeon for players to tackle. All previously released cosmetic DLC, namely costumes for Adol and Karja and decorations for the Sandras, are included, as are some tweaks to specific game mechanics like naval combat and mini-games, and some graphical and performance upticks. All told, this package is certainly worthy of being deemed the game’s definitive edition. The Ys formula, while certainly evolved over time, has always been focused on more action-oriented mechanics, and there are enough bells and whistles here to keep it generally engaging, if a bit repetitive, while the storytelling has taken on a more and more prominent role over time. It may not be up the alley of those looking for deeply engrossing gameplay, but for players with a passing interest in the franchise who have not yet committed to this installment, now’s the perfect time to dive in and get their feet wet.

Despite some strong new content, Falcom's enhanced version of the 2024 action RPG still falls short of the series' best.

Ys X: Proud Nordics is a great game for JRPG enthusiasts: flashy combat, a breezy but entertaining story, likeable characters, and the definitive package with sharper visuals and tighter controls. But if you’ve already sailed through the base game, this “Proud” upgrade feels hard to justify at full price: fun extras, sure, yet more DLC-sized than full re-release worthy.
