I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—unorthodox though it may be, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a very welcome addition to the Ys series and a game that I highly recommend. If you’ve already played the game on PS4, I get why you might not want to pick this version up (although I wouldn’t blame you if you did). Amazing as it is, it’s basically the same game, except it works slightly better, and you get some free DLC costumes. If you haven’t played the game, yet, you literally don’t have any excuse to not play Monstrum Nox at this point.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is an excellent action RPG from Falcom, but I can only recommend this PS5 version to newcomers. Having played it on literally every console and PC platform now, I still adore most of Ys IX, but NIS America should've done more for the PS5 port. If you own the PS4 version, just play that. You aren't missing much here.

Monstrum Nox builds greatly on the systems of its predecessor, making for a really fun title and a great promise to the tenth instalment. The PlayStation 5 version does not offer enough reasons for you to get it if you have already played the original. Still, its slightly refreshed visuals are surely welcome, especially since the only thing Ys games generally lack is better graphics.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a fantastic starting point for newcomers to the series, as it effortlessly immerses you into the secrets behind the prison city of Balduq. The frantic and fast paced combat combined with slick traversal mechanics allow for a highly addictive gameplay loop. It is, however, a bit questionable the level of effort put into this native PS5 port considering there’s very little improvements made and no upgrade path from PS4. If you haven’t experienced this fantastic JRPG yet, then this is hands down the definitive way to enjoy it, but I can’t recommend another purchase for those who already have.

Although its PS5 version is redundant, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is still a fantastic game. Following on the footsteps of Lacrimosa of Dana is a daunting challenge on it's own, but Nihon Falcom manages to keep the legacy of the legendary RPG series intact through a memorable cast and a story full of twists, being highly recommended for fans of the series and the genre.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a direct action RPG that offers interesting mechanics to the Ys formula. It will delight fans of the series and even lovers of the action genre. Although graphically it is not up to the current generation, it is still a good title that will give us several hours of fun.

Adol Christin's most agile adventure excels but its PS5 port can only be recommended to first-time players

Is Monstrum Nox worth getting on PS5? If you’ve never played it before, this is a great time to start. You’ve got smooth, fast-paced combat, corny dialogue, and a narrative crammed with anime nonsense. These games are utterly shameless and it rules. On top of that, the DLC makes an excellent cherry on top, a wacky garnish if you will. But if you’ve played any other version of the game, I wouldn’t bother with this one. The graphics are the same, the content is 95% identical, and your PS5 can play PS4 games. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a great game, but it’s not quite worth a double dip.

They feel really stop start, the voice acting is as bad as it gets, not helped by the poor dialogue. The mapping system is awful. They went from being great action RPG's in the middle games to very generic JRPG's in the last 2. I played this fortunately for free on PS Plus cos after a couple of hours I was so bored. I am on my 3rd, or 4th play through of Ys Origin, which I have on 2 consoles and happened to play again this week too. I enjoyed all my time with Ys Origin for about 4 hours and enjoyed about 5 minutes of my time with Ys 9 for 2 hours. It's generic and safe. Has no atmosphere compared to earlier games. Full Review »

If you are a collector like me, I recommend buying this edition.

If you own the PS4 or Switch edition, I don't recommend checking out again. If it's your first time, go ahead!

Regarding the game, the mechanics continue to improve. The graphics against YS VIII Lacrimosa of Dana are remarkable and I really liked the gameplay. Much more fluid, elegant and with good action, Ys IX Monstrum Nox is a gem for PS5.
