    Goddamn this game is good. It completely came out of nowhere for me and has been a supremely pleasant surprise. Having heard about the game in the past being in early access, I was expecting something of a middling 'steam horror' affair that would be okay, but lack the polish and heft to really satisfy me. I'm thrilled to say however that the game has way exceeded my expectations.

Having heard about the game in the past being in early access, I was expecting something of a middling 'steam horror' affair that would be okay, but lack the polish and heft to really satisfy me. I'm thrilled to say however that the game has way exceeded my expectations.

    First of all, from a presentation perspective the game is extremely impressive. I feel like it gets off to a bit of a rough start what with the fmv intro which is quite compressed and the facial work leaves a lot to be desired. That's okay though because it's the environments and the lighting that really sell the atmosphere. Older survival horror titles had a knack for making each room and hallway feel distinct with little touches of detail and camera angles and TS has this in spades. It's so important when it comes to back tracking and memorising the layout of the map so I'm very glad that the devs managed to nail this aspect.

    The dynamic lighting employed in this game is actually jaw dropping at times given the budget of the game and the texture and material work is surprisingly good and I'd go as far as to say outshines some of the more big budget games I've played recently. Big props to them for also getting darkness right. Too many games will claim areas are "dark" when in reality you can see just fine without a flash light and it completely ruins the mood. In dark areas, you can see what your lighter illuminates and that's it! If you turn it off, it's literally pitch black. Makes some of the segments extremely nerve wracking.

    The sound design is also, again, surprisingly well realised considering the budget. It's grimey and frightening when it needs to be and the music strikes an excellent balance between Silent Hill's industrial style tension music and Resident Evil's memorable piano driven tracks. It really draws you into the world.

    Some of the weapons are actually really fun to use too. The nail gun is satisfying and the makeshift shotgun has one of the coolest weapon reload animations I've seen in a long time. It's really strange to be playing this game that clearly didn't have a huge budget but has so many cool little ideas and details and a level of competency that makes it all come together in such a compelling way.

    I've been gushing like crazy so far so now for some negative points. Whilst striking and distinctive, I do feel like the default outfit is a bit much. In the right game I can live with some fan service and letcherous intent but in this game it just feels a bit out of place and kinda cheapens things in a way that I feel the game is better than. Everything else about the game feels like it's going for this certain type of tone and then the main character is literally dressed like she just stepped out of a final fantasy game. Feels a bit weird. Thankfully, the devs have patched in the ability to swap clothes into something much more fitting right from the start. As great as this is however, I do feel like the alternate costume should've been the default one and the default costume should've been an unlockable one. That's kind of a minor personal gripe though and doesn't have too much impact on the overall game and comes down more to taste.

    The other big stumbling block from time to time are some of the puzzles. There were some puzzles in the game where I genuinely don't know how I would've worked them out without a guide. There are hints if you're paying attention but some of them are so obtuse that it's only after you've looked up the solutions that you'll think "oooh yeah, that makes sense now!" and they are very cool in retrospect. Problem is though, they can stall your progress for a long time and make you feel a bit frustrated that it wasn't something you could work out for yourself.

    Again, your miliage may vary in this regard, but it was a source of frustration for me on occasion.

    So why am I giving this a 9 with the aforementioned complaints? Well, the game is just so damn satisfying and has a real genuine heart to it that it's hard to let the complaints overshadow the whole package. Given the cost of entry being around £15 digitally and the length of the game being around 8-12 hours depending on your play style, I'd say it's well worth the cost and time investment and if you're into survival horror games and have been yearning for something genuinely scary to give you Silent Hill vibes, this is the game for you.

    It easily outdoes the recent Western Silent Hill games and even gives some recent RE games a run for their money in my book.

    Don’t skip this one. One of the best looking indie games I’ve ever played with excellent level design. Exploring the hospital was as good as RE1 mansion in my opinion. It’s blends RE and silent hill perfectly, and you can tell the devs were going for that.

    The voice acting was not good, like original RE on ps1 not good, but everything else was great.

    The game is like a love letter to those games some of us miss so much. If you're not the kind of player who only cares about graphics, and love this genre you're gonna love this game. The puzzles, the backtracking, the atmosphere... Totally recomended at a nice price since day one. Go for it!

    A very good game of the genre. The lighting and sound effects are spots on. I really enjoyed the puzzles and the atmosphere was really well done. Combat was very poor tho and the ability to save sporadically meant that you often had to re do parts of the game. Also, the least said about the voice acting the better! Overall tho I have really enjoyed it.

I’m glad this game exists. Interesting puzzles and a really cool atmosphere are what make this game so good. It plays more like old-school Silent Hill than anything else.     A modern survival horror made by people who not only know what survival horror is but understand it as well. If you have played survival horror before than you’ll have a good idea of what’s in store with Tormented Souls. The gameplay is a mix of exploration, puzzles and combat with tank like controls, fixed camera angles, back tracking and limited resources. It does a pretty    8.0/10

    A modern survival horror made by people who not only know what survival horror is but understand it as well.

    If you have played survival horror before than you’ll have a good idea of what’s in store with Tormented Souls. The gameplay is a mix of exploration, puzzles and combat with tank like controls, fixed camera angles, back tracking and limited resources. It does a pretty good job with movement and exploration. You’ll find yourself steadily unlocking your way further into the atmospheric mansion/hospital and learning the layout. But there are a couple of drawbacks. I didn’t like the map at all and did not find it good to use. There are also times when there is too much to keep track of, especially if you take breaks during your playthrough. Puzzles are mostly very good but at times they can be too obtuse and there is probably a few too many of them. Combat is solid and I liked the weapons but there is room for improvement here. There is just the right amount of resources to keep you playing carefully and considering your saves but inventory management wasn’t really here. Darkness is used very well as you need your lighter equipped to see in some places but then can’t have a weapon out. It’s a cool, well executed idea that is right at home in survival horror. The gameplay experience is absolutely more positive than negative and survival horror fans are in for a good time.

    Visually this game is outstanding for a lower budget title. The environments and lighting is fantastic and the fixed but often tracking camera frames it all beautifully. The objects and menus are well done too, excluding the map. Sadly the characters and enemies are not on the same level. There is something off about them both technically and in style. It’s almost like they are from a slightly different game. They lack expression and personality too. It’s not really that much of an issue though and Tormented Souls still superbly delivers unsettling atmosphere, gore and body horror. The music and sound design is really damn good too. The only issue there is they didn’t know when to use restraint and have silence.

    The story, lore and characters are not that great. It’s fine but forgettable and predictable. There wasn’t any hook or interesting background that pulled me in. It’s like a bunch of different horror ideas somewhat poorly put together. The dialogue isn’t written well and is poorly voice acted. And it’s not in that cheesy, camp and/or charming way you might expect from an older horror game. It is just subpar. It is certainly no disaster or deal breaker though and I still found some enjoyment in it.

    The biggest issue I had with Tormented Souls was that I only did one play through. I planned on doing more and there are trophies that encourage you to. However once I finished it I wasn’t in the mood to do it again. I know this might sound vague or bit unhelpful but something put me off playing again. Maybe it’s the flow or pacing. Maybe it is a bit too long with a few too many puzzles. Maybe it was just my backlog staring at me. I don’t know exactly but I will try to revisit it again for sure.

    Overall none of the flaws detracted too much from my experience and it was one of my favourite games to come out in 2021. Of course I am willing to be forgiving to as it is lower budget and one of my favourite genres. Tormented Souls is a fantastic survival horror by a clearly passionate team. It’s a must play for any survival horror fan and I would give it a good recommendation even if you’re not.

The inspiration for this game is clear with the pre rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. The cut scenes and dialogue are a bit campy but overall the game plays well and ha excellent graphic quality. The sound effects and music fit the atmosphere of the game.     Real classic horror game like Resident Evil.
    Atmosfere is amazing and the sound gives you the right anxiety.

It’s authentic to classic survival horror down to the cheesy voice acting and tank controls (if you opt for them). It does have an alternate modern control scheme, think of the 2 control options inIf you grew up on classic 90s survival horror (RE, Silent Hill) and wish they’d bring it back just once more then this is a must-buy.     This is based on the classic survivor horror games! With amazing puzzles and a lot to add to the genre, Tormented Souls feels fresh with interesting mechanics. One of the best games of the year.

    I would be willing to overlook the games overall lack of polish and it's super dumb horror trope juggler story because for an indie studio they absolutely nailed the atmosphere and the exploration element that made classic horror games fun to play . I also got a kick from the numerous nods to classics such as RE1 Remake , Silent Hill 1 and even Fatal Frame . That being said the map beingI would be willing to overlook the games overall lack of polish and it's super dumb horror trope juggler story because for an indie studio they absolutely nailed the atmosphere and the exploration element that made classic horror games fun to play .     This Game nailed the Old School Survival horror that we had back, even in the Alone in the Dark Era. It’s a RE meet Silent Hill meet Alone in the Dark!! It’s worth it for any fan of this genre!!

Without a guide good luck solving many of them as I strongly believe that some of these were harder than everything in RE and even the Riddles from Silent Hill when set on hard
    - I get the idea behind the game not holding your hand but the map is just awful and doesn't help you whatsoever . Even the old Resident Evil and Silent Hill games weren't this "hardcore"

    The atmosphere is amazing, the detail on every game object or scenario speaks passion, really like the ambiance and uncertainty, it takes the best things about classic RE with some silent hill in the mix, recommended for fans of any of these two games

    DO NOT BUY!!!!! This game is fat phobic and offensive to the disabled. It's so bad that in their hospital the only way to get to the elevator is up 3 stairs. LOL. That's how little they thought about actual disabled people when they were creating their game full of monsters in wheelchairs. The wheelchair monsters can magically roll up stairs. The story is FULL of plot holes. Also,DO NOT BUY!!!!! This game is fat phobic and offensive to the disabled. It's so bad that in their hospital the only way to get to the elevator is up 3 stairs.     VERY BAD GAME. A trash. Extremely difficult puzzles. You will have to search always solution in youtube. Very complicated. Very BAD GRAPHICS like from past generation games. Too dark. Didnt enjoy it at all. Avoid it.

    If your a fan if true survival horror you need to try this game out..Sure it fall short of the REs and SHs, but it's a damn good effort..Amazing atmosphere with well balanced gameplay just like the legends use to do..I love the protagonist, she is instantly compelling in the best way making you want to save her.

    Awesome game. When you first start it, you’ll probably cringe at the voice acting and graphics, but I feel it adds to the charm. It’s like playing Resident Evil 1 or 2 all over again, with a new story and new characters. Fantastic game - kept me interested from start to finish.

This game clearly has some nods to original RE games, especially RE1, and Silent Hill 2/3. It excels in everything that made those games iconic and does a lot more.     The amount of highly polished content you get for your purchase is insane. So do support these guys if you're into classic survival horror titles like the ones I mentioned.

    **Mild Spoilers Ahead**
    They nailed the sound design, atmosphere, and the PUZZLES! I find the puzzles in this game miles better than both RE and SH puzzles.
    The story was very well constructed and everything neatly came together in my opinion, you might be able to guess some plot points earlier but I didn't find it to be that much of an issue.
    I find the voice acting to be somewhat bad in a way that makes it charming, similar to RE1, so I actually liked this part about the game.
    The only part which isn't good nor "too bad it's good" was the character animations in cutscenes; that said, they certainly don't annoy that much and there aren't that many cutscenes like that to begin with.

    Overall, I loved this game and it kinda pisses me off seeing how a lot of media outlets just passed by this masterpiece.    … Expand

    Excellent game but most of all EXCELLENT survival horror experience! Story, plot twists, gameplay and most importantly atmosphere are 10/10!
    Hope we get more games like this and developers deserve a bow and this game should really be priced more.

    This is for the fans a masterpiece of horror, looks like some horror game from ps1 and ps2 , the game remember me lost things about this golden era of horror classic. The game is hard but is perfect for à survival horror.

You can use the sound to your advantage and make things out of sight twice as scary. This did not. The puzzles were fun and the story was so-so. I couldn't understand why early on you meet someone else in the abandoned hospital filled with monsters, and the protagonist is just like, "oh yeah, someone else is just here and that's not weird nor should I question it."     excelente titulo si eres vieja escuela en los video juegos, es un titulo de terror camara al hombro con una onda muy clasica, momentos intensos, enemigos agresivos, podria tener mejores graficos y acabados en este aspecto, hay detalles que parece que no les pusieron mucho mimo, necesita audio en español pero tiene subtitulos. algunos problemas tecnicos con las camaras en momentos de pelea.

    This game is so wonderfull. Esse jogo é maravilhoso. É aquilo que a Capcom deveria apresentar em Resident Evil. Mas eles preferem insistir em tentar agradar a todos e acabam desapontando os fãs de survivor horror.

    this game is amazing we need more like tormented souls, im a huge fan of survival horrors, but the genre saddly is kinda dead, so this was a diamond and i hope people understand that fans want a good survival horror thats all we ask

    Fantastic for old school horror games fans. The puzzles are quite interesting and well implemented. Animations and voice acting are clunky but is understandable for an indie game. We need more games like these.

    Magnificent game. The developers really know what elements make a good survival horror game and they are executed beautifully. Brings back a lot of mechanics from Resident Evil and Silent Hill, including some iconic jumpscares. The graphics are amazing and the stiff animations / clunky combat fit very well in this setting. It involves tough puzzles, jump scares and journal reading containing a story and clues that help create a storyline, but don't expect anything visually impressive. Don't expect the replicated controls and horrible dialogue of early Resident Evil to give you anything new in Tormented Souls. IIf you're a fan of the 90s Resident Evil experience then this is a good add to your collection. It involves tough puzzles, jump scares and journal reading containing a story and clues that help create a storyline, but don't expect anything visually impressive. Don't expect the replicated controls and horrible dialogue of early Resident Evil to give you anything new in Tormented Souls. I was disappointed that in 2021 and '22 the developers didn't care much for more updated controls. Or sounds. The dialogue is painful! The enemy visuals are cheesy and lack variety. The music isn't bad, but that's quickly overshadowed by the unrealistic footsteps, attacks, and voices. The real experience are the challenging puzzles, tougher than most Resident Evil games even.… Expand

    This game has a great retro vibe and decent spooks. But my god, the gameplay is weak, the cameras can be funky, and the second half is basically Walkthrough Bait. I finished it but I was thrilled when it was over.

    I bought this title because I was a fan of survival horror when I was growing up. I was raised playing games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

    This game pays a nice tribute to those games and does so brilliantly. The atmosphere, music and setting are quite creepy. The puzzles are challenging and fun. There's some back tracking so make sure you kill everything so you don't bump into it    I bought this title because I was a fan of survival horror when I was growing up.     Ótimo jogo, ótima trilha sonora e história. Os gráficos dos personagens são meio pobre, mas é o único defeito, em contrapartida os cenários são muito bem feitos. Recomendadissimo pra quem jogou os clássicos silent hill e residential evil e gosta de puzzles criativos.

    - The female protagonist is cute, brave and controling her in this dangerous mansion add a constrated touch that i like. - Puzzles are very good and pleasant to solve. - The story is enjoyable, well written and close to    (Sorry if my english is not perfect, it's not my native language)
    I had a great time playing this video game, it reminded me a lot of the gold age of survival horror.

    - The story is enjoyable, well written and close to what you can expect, even if we can predict certain parts of the scenario during the first hour there's a lot of things to learn about in the files.

    BUT there're also bad things to say, precisely about the technical aspects of the game.
    - PS5 version is bad actually (with day-1 patch installed). Videos have low bitrate, reflections in mirrors are ugly and in a lot of rooms the game doesn't look like it's made for PS5 (low internal resolution or low framerate). I have a PC which is technically close to a PS5 and the game look a lot better.
    - Globally the title suffer from lack of animations, It reduce the impact of the emotions during cutscenes (Like the ending...). During gameplay phases it's less noticeable but i would like them to add Caroline's head looking at the closest monster.

    That's why i can't go above 8/10 even though i am falling in love with the game.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tormented Souls is an interesting indie horror game but not entirely perfect. It does some things absolutely fantastic and other things that I hope can either be fixed via a patch, expanded upon with additional content or improved within a sequel. However before I get into that let me just say that the soundtrack is mostly great. Aside from a few repetitive tracks you'll hear throughout the halls of the hospital and the reoccurring battle theme most of the tracks are just fantastic. My favorite tracks in particular were the theme for the priest as well as the save room theme. They're such peaceful tracks and remind me of days when Resident Evil and Silent Hill had some tracks like those. Also two of the ending tracks were really fantastic as well. So let's get into gameplay. Well in terms of gameplay you have to solve puzzles that are borderline cryptic like Silent Hill 1 in terms of puzzles. Some outside knowledge of religion may be required. Now to fans of Silent Hill who love puzzles being set on something like Extra Riddle difficulty you'll feel right at home for others you may find that the puzzles are a bit too difficult to solve. I think a solution to this would have been to have a difficulty for puzzles similar to SH. Speaking of difficulty while the game itself was not too difficult I was displeased to find out there were no other difficulties. I would have loved to have played the game on harder difficulties with more dangerous enemies and more scarce resources. Your movement can be done via d-pad or analog stick and while I personally like playing classic RE games with the d-pad I am happy to say that Tormented Souls played very well with the analog stick. Combat is okay though there are some flaws. For starters I had an issue where the nail gun would sometimes be bugged. It would be held like the shotgun and sound like it when firing but not hit any enemies. The quick fix was to leave a room. I believe this was cause by me switching between weapons within the menus too fast while in a reload animation but I'm not sure entirely. Dodging is in the game but I found that I would sometimes not dodge at all if I was in the middle of reloading or being attacked so it seems like the game prioritized those things before the dodge. However if you can pull it off you do get avoid taking damage and it is satisfying when it does actually work. There's unfortunately not many basic enemy types and believe it or not there's only really one boss in the game. I was very much disappointed in that since it would have been cool to see other monstrosities lurking throughout the hospital. Maybe this could change in the future if the developers decide to support this game further by adding on to it as time goes on with new additions like locals, weapons, enemies, bosses and etc. Speaking of weapons you have a total of four. A nail gun, a make shift shotgun, a cattle prod and a crow bar. Ammo is scattered throughout the game and you can blow through it easily but may have just enough by the end of the game to beat the boss. While these weapons are interesting since they were very much different from the typical guns we get in other games it would have been nice to see upgraded version or more powerful weapons to have these replaced. Really as cool as the reload animation was for the shotgun I would have liked a second one that holds more than one round in the chamber. Melee combat was good but probably could have been better with other types of melee options with different attack animations, attack ranges and damage output. There's one other issue I noticed with the game. In the control menu it tells you that you can shut off your light by hold R3. I for some reason could not get this to work no matter how much I tried. So when you're not in the dark you're just going to have that thing on at all times. After beating the game and getting the alternate endings, which there's three of, via the same save file I can say that the bad ending is actually the worst one as it just is a cheap jump scare with no real conclusion. The neutral and true endings are the best as there's a small monologue at the end of each and they both have really nice ending themes. That said when I got to the end screen I was disappointed to know there was no alternate costumes to unlock, no extra difficulties, no special weapons or items, no special modes or mini games just back to the main menu. The complaints aside I really like this game as an indie horror game as it really is solid despite the flaws. I just hope the devs can improve on this with future updates or a sequel as stated before.… Expand

If this game actually had a serious tone, with some improved gameplay here and there, had more fearful moments (and this game has some pretty frightening moments) it would have done even better.

    I actually took a chance on this game after playing the demo, knowing the voice acting was going to be awful, but it’s campy, scary, has fun gameplay, and I’m glad I spent the $20.

    The puzzles in this game are very, VERY ambiguous at times. You really have to pay attention to what you’re doing, what you’ve read, where you’re going, what seems out of place. I mean, when you do solve a puzzle it actually feels very rewarding!! I haven’t felt that in a game since the original silent hill games!!

    I did t want to make my review too long, but the game overall was very good to me. $20 is an absolute steal.

    Horror 6.5/10

    If you love classic horror games then you gonna love Tormented souls . This has to be the best game since the old resident evil and silent hill games . Apart from the voice acting this games has everything . Puzzles are really good and some of them make you work your brain alot . Even the story was good . Hope to see a second entry of this . Well done guys really impressed

Je pense que leur budget ne devait pas être énorme et pourtant ils ont réussi à sortir une belle pépite. Étant fan de Capcom, l'univers et les clins d'œil sont réussis !     Tormented Souls is a great nostalgia trip taking full advantage of updated graphics and controls to bring a tense, uncomfortable trip for all willing to risk it. Worth taking the time on by both fans of the genre and newcomers wondering what all the fuss is about. Turn those lights on full, open the curtains and prepare to have nightmares.

    As an indie game Tormented Souls is never going to reach Bloodborne or Resident Evil level of polish but that’s ok. Despite its lower end graphics (compared to the latest titles on current generation, and even last generation consoles) it holds up. It holds up because it plays on that nostalgia for the survival horror games of old.

    I found Tormented Souls to be just intriguing enough to be worth checking out if you have the time. It's a lesson in where survival-horror games have come from and what stories can still be told within the genre. With a little more modernization within the combat and cleaner visuals, this probably could have been an underground classic.
