I feel The Dragoness: Command of the Flame falters with its pacing. It does well to explain its systems but the bread and butter battles take place on dull playing fields. With missions being on the lengthy side, the repetition did start to wear thin and the basic presentation didn't raise my eyebrows. The roguelike elements do throw some variety in the mix but it's countered with hero progression being reset after each mission. It is a functional tactical RPG but it lacks a little excitement.

Combining turn-based strategy with rougelike elements is a great idea, but unfortunately The Dragoness can’t quite pull it off. Enjoyable for a while, but the lack of interesting combat and engaging narrative will be enough to turn most players off.

If you enjoy the turn-based combat of the Heroes of Might & Magic series, then The Dragoness is one of the better and more faithful interpretations of that very specific style. With Heroes of Might & Magic itself dead at the hands of a publisher that we don’t even want to revive it, this scratches an itch and at least tries to pick up and run with the baton. Does it stumble here and there along the way? Yes, but it’s moreish despite that, and the homage is so genuine that it’s difficult to not find it charming despite its warts.
