This is a game with a lot of challenge to it. Even on the easiest mode, even the easiest enemies have the capability of wrecking you if you're not careful. Most enemies require more than just bulldozing through them, and utilizing your shield, dodging, and counterattack are almost necessary. Unfortunately, the controls simply don't meet what's necessary for the challenging gameplay. Blocking is limited, counterattacking has an incredibly small window of utilization, there are gameplay design issues that are unnecessary hampering, and combat is unnecessarily clunky. You can see moments where the game shines in these areas, but those are few and far between. Most of the time, you just get frustrated, dying for what seems like no good reason. All of that is a shame because otherwise the game has a lot of great work. The graphics, the music, the writing, the characters, even the gameplay options are all great. And they would be even better if the game had some very basic things down that didn't feel like they brought everything else down. I'll happily return to the game when some of these issues have been resolved and maybe the difficulty has been better balanced, but as of now, the game is simply too frustrating for me to want to jump back in. There is soooo much potential to this game, with its great art style and story. Sadly that is let down somewhat by clunky controls (I'm looking at you every door I walk passed and accidentally enter if my left stick is pointed even 2% northwards) and a deverstating lack of checkpoints. The game is hard but sadly not good hard like any soulsbourne game. Hard because of poor design. You can spend a good 20 mins reaching a certain area, get bodied by a mob and have to do it all over again, as there is such a poor focus on saving progression. That's every chest, item, bit of gold collected gone. The game would be an easy 9 if it wasn't for this. Its worth a try and prepare to cry.

EDIT. DROPPED SCORE FROM 6 TO 4.... PROGRESSING IN THIS GAME DOES NOT MAKE IT BETTER AND UNTIL A HUGE PATCH COME OUT TO FIX MANY OF THE GLARING ISSUES THIS GAME HAS, I WOULDN'T BOTHER BUYING IT.

Cool art style, but controlls are clunky (really devs, did you even try the thumbstick? Thing's more sensitive than 90s boybands).

Edit: now played for 5 hours, at which point it basically loses all its charm.

Breathtaking graphics and stellar presentation, but beyond that, the game unfortunately feels very unpolished. Terrible difficulty curve, awful controls with tons of lost inputs and sloppy animation priority combined with a relentless difficulty (even on 'easy') and a slew of bugs, one of which I found was game-breaking and ruined my save file). It's a game that has TONS of potential and I feel that with enough patches it can be fixed, but in it's current state it's just a needlessly difficult game with poor controls and extremely slow RPG progression. It's basically not fun. I truly hope it gets fixed because there is clearly a LOT of love and care put into this game and I'd hate to see such a beautiful game wasted on terrible gameplay Expand

It's pixelart is out of this world, it's an incredible masterpiece, the best I've ever seen. The music is also outstanding. The game design, scenarios, maps, is excellent. I love this game, but also hate it, and most people will leave the game in anger before reaching the first city: Even on easy mode it's abusively frustrating. It's not demanding, it's annoying and malicious

Enemies do too much damage, bosses have too much health, constant merciless traps designed to make exploring dungeons a hell, poorly arranged checkpoints and consequently you have to spend hours doing the same things over and over again. Many times they put you in situations where obligatorily you have to die several times to advance. Gentlemens, you are confused if you think soulslike work this way. If anyone on the team wonders why the ratings are so low, I think it's obvious: It's awkward, annoying, unpleasant, excesively frustrating even in easy mode, and easy mode exists so people don't feel that way. Sometimes I want to put a zero for rage even though I'm used to play on the highest difficulties, what do you expect from the rest of the players? This is a good game, absolutely, but the approach of what difficulty means to the devs completely harms the experience.

June 23 EDIT: The Devs have caved since launch and implemented knee-jerk patch that nerfs and VASTLY changes the game. WAY to easy to play now, it's made for Smooth-brains now, it's not anything like it was. Cry-baby millenials ruin yet another decent game because they don't know how to dodge, jump, roll and attack at the right times. Sad.

EVERY NEG REVIEW ABOUT LOSING SAVES ARE MADE BY MOUTH-BREATHING-SMOOTH-BRAINS!

This game is awesome. An excellent 'Vania with a nice fantasy setting.
Music is excellent and the challenge is real, but not too punishing.
If they played a video-game before they would have realized there ARE SAVE POINTS, the save points even refill your health.

FFS all these kids crying about how hard this game is and losing save data are the reason they make 'Story Modes' in games a thing now, because they're all too dumb to read, the game tells you how to save, you just have to be paying attention, this is 'Cuphead' rage all over again.

Puchased on switch when it come out...crashed my save file after 18 hours or gameplay.
I wait for a year and I purchase it again on ps4 thinking for sure it will be ok.....13 hours in...once again the game crashes for no reason and save game wiped out...I am not gonna start it a 3rd time...stay away from the windows 98 of the indie games

A good choice if you enjoy an occasional slice of the retro-styled cake; just be aware that this game bites back. Hard. Stock up on patience, souldier. [Issue#17, p.90]

Where you fall on Souldiers probably depends on whether you were an early adopter. Technical issues appearing at launch were considerable, but have now largely been addressed. Those just coming to the game now, or those willing to return for a second attempt, will find a title as superbly high-quality as it is challenging. However, with great challenge comes great satisfaction, and the journey along the way is just so memorable; there were times I could literally not put the controller down, even after hours of playing. The ending does promise a sequel, and I, for one, am extremely excited about what this talented team can provide in a sophomore outing with the lessons learned here.

Souldiers is a kind of comfort food. There are players who will actively seek out a game like this, one that is inspired by the best kinds of interactive nostalgia. While developer Retro Forge is keen on piquing the interest of classic key genres, Souldiers stands surprisingly well on its own qualities. This is a beautiful game that can be absurdly difficult but it’s more than a large, interconnected map and a twist on punishing combat. The name might be a little too clever for its own good but keep in mind that Souldiers is unique in its own right.
