Feb 21, 2024After the excellent pirate game Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, you would think that Ubisoft did not have much work to do to deliver a good standalone title, but the developer is hopelessly drowning. Outside of the nice ship combat and customization, Skull and Bones is rudderless: uninspired, superficial and, above all, extremely boring. A one-way gangway, please.

Mar 19, 2024Skull and Bones is the byproduct of a tumultuous development cycle, a game that is devoid of any vision other than incorporating a GAAS store.

Feb 26, 2024Despite the clear effort that went into build diversity and satisfying naval combat, Skull and Bones’s core gameplay loops simply aren’t enough to stop this ship from sinking. Mindless grinds, tedious busywork, and a complete lack of any meaningful gameplay hooks outside of the core combat result in an experience that feels incomplete despite the plethora of Ubisoft checklists that there is to work through in your time at sea. If you’re someone who enjoys tinkering with builds and doesn’t mind grinding for materials in a constant pursuit of that next upgrade for hours on end, then you may find something to like here. Otherwise, this is a voyage into tedium-induced insanity that you can definitely afford to miss.

Feb 23, 2024Skull and Bones could have been a welcoming and rare new beacon for pirate game fans but, even with seasons of promised premium content yet to come, this boat is visibly sinking.
-
Feb 22, 2024Skull And Bones has great naval combat but far too little else to recommend it, with a weak story and gameplay systems that amount to nothing but endless busywork.
-
Feb 22, 2024Skull and Bones is a game that, frankly, shouldn't have advanced to its conclusion. Monotonous and lacking in variety of content, the experience quickly becomes boring. It fails to fulfill the essentials of a video game: to entertain and motivate the player to return.

Feb 19, 2024If only the story had been good, this might have held up to something better, but then not. Honestly, I wish I could use the game's best feature - "fast travel" - and go back to before I put 30 hours into this game.
-
Feb 19, 2024It doesn’t provide anything new, or even the basics of what people want from an ambitious pirate adventure, being overshadowed by Ubisoft’s own game 11 years older. Even with the solid naval combat mechanics we’ve seen in multiple games over the last decade, it’s just not enough to carry the promise of a pirate’s life on its own.

Feb 26, 2024Unfortunately, the open-ocean vibes don’t last long enough to sustain the utter lack of anything else to do.
