May 3, 2026The end result is a top notch when gameplay, entertainment value, and difficulty level are perfectly tuned to the same pitch.
-
Apr 24, 2026This is a great showcase for the PS5 and well worth a look for those seeking a sci-fi epic packed full of challenge.
-
Apr 24, 2026The developer didn’t turn a blind eye to the shortcomings of its predecessor, Returnal. Saros has kept the best parts—the controls are wonderfully responsive, your character runs and jumps at a brisk pace, and the atmosphere is delightfully dark—and made adjustments where necessary. Still, you’ll inevitably die while playing; that’s just part of the genre. But with every session, you get better and stronger, and you’re better equipped for your next run. The dopamine rush this creates makes the game—at least for us—incredibly addictive. Saros plays it safe and, while challenging, is perhaps less daring and revolutionary than Returnal, but that makes the game more accessible to a wider audience.
-
Apr 24, 2026Advancements in progression, narrative delivery, and player engagement, as well as refinements made to a near-perfect set of gameplay fundamentals, see Saros eclipse its predecessor and ascend to a throne above all others in the genre.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros might not be perfect, with the storytelling in particular showing some rough edges. It takes a while getting up to speed but when all systems are in place, it's an exceptional arcade shooter and an extraordinary spectacle.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is a triumphant successor to Returnal, delivering an outstanding sci-fi experience. Its excellent visuals bring the planet Carcosa to life, while its fast, fluid combat remains consistently satisfying. Special praise should be given to the meticulously crafted audio, with an eclectic soundtrack and impactful sound design. Moreover, Housemarque demonstrates a clear evolution over its predecessor, refining an already memorable formula into one of the strongest experiences in the Sony Studios lineup.
-
Apr 23, 2026A perfect marriage between difficult and accessible, Saros is a brilliantly designed and majestic sci-fi nightmare that is as compelling as it is challenging.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a bold, confident realization of 30 years of Housemarque. It builds on the mystery and exceptional gameplay of Returnal with an excellent lead performance, and changes to the formula mean even more players will come to realize that Housemarque is PlayStation's secret weapon.
-
Apr 23, 2026Housemarque is back with yet another fantastic fast-paced third person shooter. Saros builds on Returnal, delivering deeper and more enjoyable gameplay, as well as a new permanent progression system and modifiers which allow you to tweak the difficulty to your preferences. All in all, it's Housemarque's best game yet.
-
Apr 23, 2026As a follow up to Returnal, Saros is excellent. It builds on the foundations of Selene’s adventure is a sensational slice of bullet-hell shooter goodness.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros finds a perfect balance amidst its chaos. The same game that makes your heart race will also take advantage of the slow-paced segments to tell a surprisingly deep and sensible story.
-
Apr 23, 2026Housemarque enhances their already lofty reputation with a title that even surpasses their efforts with Returnal. The prospect of putting down the controller is almost as terrifying as the world of Carcosa.
-
Apr 23, 2026A blistering, rapid-fire epic without peer, Saros confidently delivers a dual masterclass in third-person shooter design and roguelike sensibilities all wrapped in a delectable veneer that elevates it to one of the best looking games on PlayStation 5. To quote the kids - Housemarque cooked here. This is their masterpiece and it is next the must have, utterly essential PlayStation exclusive. Carcosa beckons.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros pushes the envelope on multiple fronts, changing the roguelike genre in ways that’s more player-friendly than ever while taking advantage of the PS5’s DualSense controller in novel fashions. It’s near perfect in several ways, even if its story lacks the satisfaction that its gunplay otherwise provides.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a masterpiece. Not only does Housemarque successfully build on the foundations of Returnal, but it refines them to create a more accessible experience without losing its core principles. The combat system encourages aggression, making each encounter a tense and enthralling battle where risk-taking is rewarded. While the story is much more present than its predecessor, it never interrupts the action, complementing the deep and complex systems. With more options to personalise your adventure, this is not just a Game of the Year contender, but one of the defining games of its generation.
-
May 2, 2026Saros stands tall as a bold evolution for Housemarque, proving the studio wasn’t content with simply recreating the magic of Returnal. Instead, it refines and expands on it in meaningful ways by pairing its punishing bullet-hell combat with smarter progression systems, broader accessibility ideas, and a narrative that trades clarity for intrigue. Arjun’s relentless, emotionally driven journey through Carcosa gives the experience a fiery contrast to Returnal’s isolation, while the “come back stronger” philosophy is felt in every run, every failure, and every hard-earned breakthrough back at The Passage. It can be overwhelming and at times unforgiving, but that tension is exactly what makes its victories so intoxicating. And by turning struggle into growth and persistence into something deeply rewarding, Saros cements itself as a serious GOTY contender and a lot more than just a sequel in spirit.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is an utterly sizzling romp through a sci-fi cosmic horror show that showcases Housemarque’s pedigree for spectacular, arcade action. Not only is Saros a user-friendly evolution of Returnal's core systems, which were already near-perfection, but it’s an exceptional, technical showpiece for a console that makes faultless performance seem magical. If Returnal was a reason to invest in next-gen, Saros pays that belief off again in what is currently a one-horse race for Game of the Year.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is brilliant from every angle, even if it isn’t the bold, risk-taking, and highly innovative bet that Returnal once was. Its highly sophisticated gameplay fits perfectly with a beautiful level design and its entire roguelite structure. On top of that, it presents one of the most visually and audibly impressive titles you can currently find on PS5—without even mentioning its deeply crafted science fiction story that keeps you engaged throughout a surprisingly long runtime. Yes, we’re looking at one of those games that will undoubtedly appear on “best of the year” lists, and it could even earn a spot among those competing for Game of the Year.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros masterfully delivers on everything it sets out to do. Although the game doesn't yet have any extra content to enjoy after the ending, it manages to entertain the player for a long time simply through the curiosity of testing all types of weapons and searching for audio recordings of past crews. Saros is the kind of homework a student is proud to show to the teacher.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is Housemarque at its best. It nails the roguelike formula, with each run feeling completely different than what came before thanks to changing areas and a variety of weapons. The story grips you and doesn’t let go, with Rahul Kohli’s fantastic performance at the heart of it.
-
Apr 23, 2026SAROS is head and shoulders above Returnal, which was already a stellar reinvention of the bullet-hell genre, thanks to a richer story, tougher enemies and gameplay systems that tailor the game to the player.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is Housemarque's ultimate creation; the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation. Returnal is Game of the Year quality, no doubt. But Saros has taken what Returnal offered and refined it, only adding to the formula until the end result is Housemarque's finest release yet. In a sea of great April games, Saros' excellence stands out as another Game of the Year contender.
-
Apr 30, 2026Just as the moon covers the sun, with lost Carcosa awash with golden yellow, Saros eclipses all in its wake. Boasting a deep and synergistic core gameplay loop evoking Returnal, premium difficulty balancing options, emotionally-driven character writing, and the newest look cosmic horror has seen in decades, you wouldn’t be driven mad by playing this game; you’d be mad not to. Strange is the one who cannot fathom the greatness of Saros, but stranger still is lost Carcosa.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is an extraordinary game—bordering on perfection within its genre—and a masterclass in how to fully harness its own strengths. Its gameplay is entirely at the service of the player; featuring polished mechanics, a palpable and customizable progression system, and the genuine sensation of playing a title with infinite longevity. It stands as a magnificent display of strength from the team at Housemarque—a studio that is no longer the underdog—having successfully delivered two of the very best exclusives of the PlayStation 5 generation: Returnal and—indeed—Saros.
-
Apr 24, 2026SAROS takes what made Returnal such a epically awesome action game and turns the dial way up while simultaneously offering such a distinct and immersive game world that it'll haunt your dreams even long after the end credits roll.
-
Apr 23, 2026Moving, shooting, improving (both in stats and skill), winning, and even losing is an unequivocal joy in Saros, and I only wish I could write this sentence faster so I can hurry up and get back to planet Carcosa and attempt another run.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros marks the peak of Housemarque’s craft. Moving away from a more traditional roguelite structure, it adopts a slightly less punishing approach without sacrificing challenge or its highly addictive nature. Built around a strong sense of progression, the game delivers a rewarding feeling of evolution throughout the journey. With a well-crafted sci-fi universe and sharp, responsive gameplay, Saros strikes a compelling balance between demanding encounters and an inviting overall experience.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros has become one of my favorite shooters of the past few years, honestly since Returnal. I appreciate Housemarque for giving both the more hardcore and the less hardcore among us the chance to see the world it's crafted in its entirely. My hands hurt a little, and I'll probably need a new controller sometimes soon, but it's a cycle I'm willing to be stuck in for a bit longer.
-
May 7, 2026SAROS is a fantastic experience from beginning to end. The narrative delivers a brilliant cosmic horror narrative with a great cast of characters, brilliant performances, a rich and intriguing world, and incredible representation thanks to a great South Asian protagonist. Further, the gameplay is a non-stop thrill ride throughout, that never feels too difficult despite the occasional spike in challenge. While there are some issues with the post-game and build options, this is a must-play for any PlayStation 5 owners and an early game of the year contender.
-
May 7, 2026Saros is an evolution of the basis that Housemarque built with Returnal, positioning itself as one of the best, if not the best bullet-hell shooters of all time. Despite some story pacing issues and a bit loosened, “easier” roguelite systems, It is a remarkable game - its gameplay, level design and overall feel are one of the best and it is sure to provide many fun hours of sci-fi chaos and horror.
-
May 5, 2026Saros establishes itself as one of the best releases in the genre, demonstrating—once again—the talent of Housemarque. Its superb and precise gameplay shines in every combat encounter, making it a memorable game.
-
May 5, 2026Saros serves as an excellent spiritual successor to Returnal, delivering an intriguing cosmic horror journey combined with an addictive roguelite loop.
-
May 5, 2026Saros builds on the foundation of Returnal and pushes it into a more flexible and ambitious space. Housemarque delivers a roguelite with outstanding combat and a far more approachable run structure thanks to its progression system. The result is a brilliant game that refines the studio's formula.
-
May 4, 2026Saros is a confident evolution of Housemarque’s formula and a compelling experience from start to finish. It may not carry the same punishing edge as Returnal, but what it gains in accessibility and progression makes it a game that more players can engage with and enjoy. If you can play it, you absolutely should.
-
May 4, 2026From top to bottom, Saros exudes triple-A excellence with stunning visuals, expert sound design, and some of the most tightly-crafted third-person action gameplay in recent memory.
-
May 4, 2026Saros is an evolution of Returnal in many ways, although it has abandoned the randomness of the previous game, which may disappoint some players. Delivering one of the best gameplay experiences of this generation, a solid story with human characters and real conflicts, and some of the best and most memorable bosses of this generation, this is the kind of game that may not appeal to everyone at first, but once you start playing, you simply can't stop thinking about it and want to play cycle after cycle.
-
May 2, 2026If you like roguelike games, this is one you should not miss. Likewise,if you like challenging shooters or elliptical storytelling, Saros is also here for you. All three of these things run primarily beside each other throughout the experience, and playing will not disappoint you. An excellent game by any measure, I’d recommend Saros to almost anyone even slightly interested.
-
Apr 28, 2026Saros understands exactly what motivates players, and presents all the tools you need to experience the joy of triumph against the odds. Even when it presents a frustrating road block, there is always the opportunity to move through it, with persistence key to enjoying the game’s many, ever-twisting challenges.
-
Apr 26, 2026As expected, SAROS stands out as a worthy spiritual successor to Returnal, and even more so. Far from resting on its laurels, Housemarque has successfully built upon the solid foundation of its previous title to deliver an epic adventure, enhanced by new features that make it accessible to a wider audience. While more accessible, SAROS remains a challenging yet exhilarating experience that delivers incredible thrills. This makes it a new must-have in the PS5 catalog, which once again boasts one of its best exclusives thanks to the Finnish studio.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros builds brilliantly on Returnal’s foundation, refining the gameplay loop while opening the door for a wider audience. With flexible difficulty and strong design, it’s both accessible and deeply rewarding. A few rough edges aside, this is a standout roguelite and potentially your newest obsession.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros takes everything that made Returnal hard to love and smartly refines it. The result is one of the best shooters in recent years, on PS5 and beyond.
-
Apr 24, 2026With Saros, Housemarque once again proves what it's made of. It's a step forward from Returnal, building on the best parts of that experience and elevating them even further. The result is a game that is both challenging and rewarding, with a complex and fascinating story, a protagonist who undergoes significant development, and gameplay that invites us to keep pushing ourselves time and time again.
-
Apr 24, 2026A surprisingly conservative follow-up to Returnal but the transcendent third person action is so well orchestrated that qualms about the storytelling and lack of innovation seem like only minor concerns in comparison.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is not merely a successor to Returnal; it is its raw evolution. By placing projectile absorption at the very heart of the game, Housemarque delivers a visceral shooter where aggression is rewarded. While the roguelite elements occasionally lack variety—and a touch of wildness—in their arsenal, the utilization of the PS5’s DualSense controller offers an unparalleled dopamine hit. More accessible yet still demanding, it is an unmissable gem for fans of the genre—a shooter without equal.
-
Apr 24, 2026A little more forgiving but still just as hostile and relentless, Saros is a worthy companion piece to Returnal and another terrific first-party showcase for PS5. It successfully builds on Housemarque's unique talent for beautiful bullet patterns, creepy tentacles and pulse-pounding action that makes you feel in danger while being the danger at the same time.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is an excellent, heart-pounding action game that is easily one of the PS5's best exclusives. The combat is exhilarating and Carcosa is a blast to explore. The quality-of-life features make it more accessible than Returnal, and while that might upset some purists, it helps Saros avoid some of the frustrating pitfalls that roguelite games sometimes fall into. Saros is one of the year's best releases and a must-have for PS5 gamers.
-
Apr 24, 2026A nearly flawless gem of an action game that challenges you as much as it rewards you.
-
Apr 24, 2026Housemarque’s new hit Saros will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the moment you take down a boss, you’ll find yourself doing a victory lap around the room. If you play games for excitement and adrenaline, there’s nothing better than Saros right now.
-
Apr 24, 2026Coming into 2026, I knew that few games were a surer bet than Saros. Housemarque’s 2021 breakout is still one of the PS5’s best games, and Saros will now stand alongside it. I could see some players lamenting just how similar it feels to Returnal, but Saros was exactly what I needed from a spiritual successor.
-
Apr 24, 2026An exceptionally well-made action roguelite that builds on the foundations of Returnal, but further develops and improves it in almost every way. Saros excels in particular in its ambiguous, engaging story, top-notch bullet hell action, and addictive gameplay with thoughtful progression. Although it is somewhat detracted from by a lower level of innovation, a sometimes repetitive environment, and a few frustrating moments, it is an extraordinary game that brings the action to near perfection.
-
Apr 24, 2026This frantic roguelite evolves the Housemarque formula into the year's most intense shooter. It delivers an exquisite control scheme and breathtaking bullet-ballet combat, further enriched by a flexible difficulty system and meaningful permanent progression. Although the enemy variety feels slightly limited, the addictive loop and monumental boss encounters cement it as a superior, more accessible successor.
-
Apr 24, 2026We’ve been spoiled with what could be the best year for gaming since 2023, and now Saros is the latest banger of 2026. It plays like a dream, has a fun gameplay loop, looks stunning, has a superb voice cast and a mysterious story that will keep you hooked from start to finish. Saros is a game that I can’t stop thinking about, and it’s so good that it’s made me want to give Returnal another chance. We’ve said this a lot already this year, but Saros is yet another strong game of the year contender.
-
Apr 24, 2026Housemarque has taken the Returnal formula, cut it, sewn it, dried it, and enhanced it to create a stunning sci-fi cosmic horror tale that showcases the talents of its artists. More cinematic, more accessible, and more explicit in its depiction of the terrifying and wondrous imagery of Carcosa, it has all the makings of an instant cult, losing just a few fragments of its uniqueness in the attempt to broaden its sphere of influence. It's a game that blends the essence of old-school arcades with the best of contemporary expressive means, drawing inspiration from sci-fi and literary greats, injecting the addictive power of pure action gameplay right into the heart of the experience, and then building around it a backdrop that's as captivating as it is perfectly harmonious. Simply put, Saros is one of the best PlayStation games of this generation.
-
Apr 24, 2026Housemarque strikes gold once more, building on Returnal's foundation to deliver a rogue-lite/bullet hell title unlike any other.
-
Apr 24, 2026Without straying from the excellent formula they gave us in Returnal, Housemarque has delivered a spiritual successor in Saros that achieves the rare feat of improving in almost every aspect. At the same time, it is far more accessible and respectful of the player's time, without ever diluting the level of challenge and adrenaline the studio is known for. Frenetic from start to finish, Saros leaves us with that "just one more run" itch while simultaneously inviting us to discover all its secrets through a narrative that starts slow but ends up being truly surprising.
-
Apr 24, 2026It might not be a direct sequel, but decisions like this and others elsewhere address every issue I had with Returnal. Housemarque's previous game is fantastic in its own way. Yet Saros elevates the studio's roguelite formula to another level. Its structure is surprisingly malleable, combat is deeper and more rewarding, and I couldn't resist being wrapped around the finger of its mysterious and foreboding narrative. I find roguelites hit-and-miss, but it didn't take long before I was utterly infatuated with Saros. It's an incredible game that does more than just refine what worked before. Even after rolling credits, I can't wait to dive back in.
-
Apr 23, 2026Housemarque strikes back with another thrilling expedition into the unknown. Saros is masterfully expanding the studio's roguelike gameplay in the compelling world. The fast-bullet action, the sense of discovery and playing cycles stick to your mind. One of the best sci-fi voyages of the decade.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros builds on the excellence of Returnal, furthering Housemarque's blend of third-person action, bullet hell and roguelite with a more broadly told and ambitious story, a subtly more accessible path for newcomers, and still plenty of challenge for those that crave it. Echoing the game's tagline, Housemarque has come back stronger.
-
Apr 23, 2026SAROS delivered a top-notch Rogue Like experience with gameplay that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a pretty challenging combat. Furthermore, the game provides a fantastic utilization of DualSense features that takes you in even deeper levels of immersion. The end result, a title that is one of the best PS5 exclusives this year.
-
Apr 23, 2026Overall, Saros is a fantastic experience that should not be missed. Housemarque has taken what worked for them previously and made it better. More importantly, they’ve taken the negatives from previous releases and assessed them honestly, allowing them to turn said negatives into positives.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a brilliant evolution of Returnal proving that less can truly be more. It's a gameplay machine, polished to perfection, paired with a distinctive tone, narrative, and story all its own. One of those rare gems that feels timeless, no matter the years. Saros is utterly addictive.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is Housemarque at its best, delivering an intense sci-fi roguelike with stunning visuals, strong storytelling and exceptional use of the DualSense. Its fast, tactical combat evolves the Returnal formula with color-based mechanics, high-risk encounters and rewarding permanent progression. Despite some frustrating progression bugs, Saros stands out as one of the most polished and challenging experiences on PlayStation 5.
-
Apr 23, 2026Housemarque’s Saros feels like a proper evolution of Returnal’s mechanics. It’s bold, it’s exciting, thrilling even. Each time Arjun heads out in search of answers yields clues to the truth behind Carcosa and those burdened by its existence.
-
Apr 23, 2026Will Saros appeal to everyone? Probably not—and if you didn’t enjoy the gameplay of Returnal, this one won’t hook you any more, as it relies on the same core foundation. That said, Housemarque has done such a thorough job with difficulty tuning that one can only commend such a precise response to the criticisms previously aimed at the studio. In terms of gameplay, Saros holds up admirably despite its tiny flaws, and the whole experience feels perfectly cohesive—whether in its enemies, its biomes and their variations, or the many mechanics and weapons that keep enriching the experience throughout the adventure. Add to that a gripping story, with an allegory that is far less cryptic—and therefore far more engaging—and you’re looking at the very top tier of the PlayStation 5. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the console’s best exclusive, and it’s never leaving my system.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a fantastic example of just how much good can come from giving a razor-sharp developer the time and freedom to create the game they want from a clear vision. For whilst Saros is, in scope, Housemarque's biggest game to date, it still feels laser-focused in its desire to bring bullet hell into a 3D space and equip the whole thing with an engaging sci-fi story set in a fantastic world.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is one of the strongest Game of the Year contenders of 2026. While it features typical roguelite frustrations, it never feels unfair and instead rewards persistence. Housemarque refines what made Returnal great while making the experience more accessible. The result is an intense, atmospheric shooter that stands out in the genre.
-
Apr 23, 2026SAROS stands out confidently and without a shadow of a doubt as one of the best PlayStation 5 exclusives, the result of an extremely polished and intelligent effort by Housemarque. It's not simply an evolution of Returnal, but a bold step forward that finds its strength in a remarkably well-achieved balance between challenge, depth, and accessibility. The game manages to make a typically demanding structure more readable and manageable, without ever truly simplifying it. The progression is smart and rewarding, the gunplay precise and satisfying, while new mechanics add complexity without ever feeling frustrating. Everything is designed with one clear goal in mind: to guide you through the experience in the best possible way. The result is an excellent experience on every level — solid, polished, and perfectly balanced. SAROS doesn't just improve on what came before; it demonstrates that it's possible to elevate a genre while keeping the challenge intact, making it at the same time more modern and accessible.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros stands out as a must-play for fans of the genre and a worthy successor to Returnal, pushing roguelike shooters forward with confidence and style.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros refines Returnal’s formula with intense combat and smart improvements. A must-play PS5 shooter and strong Game of the Year contender.
-
Apr 23, 2026Housemarque builds on everything that made Returnal great, pushing the intensity and bullet-hell chaos to even greater heights. A well-crafted progression system ensures players can dive into the action with confidence, without worrying about wasting their time.
-
Apr 23, 2026Like Returnal before it, Saros didn't need to be a roguelike at all. That the experience holds up so confidently regardless is a testament to the game's quality, largely because the core gameplay is once again every bit as tight as you'd expect from Housemarque.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a fiercely focused hybrid of bullet-hell, roguelite, platformer, and horror sci-fi whose demanding but fair combat and aggressive risk-reward loop easily outweigh its flat supporting cast and static hub.
-
Apr 23, 2026Overall, Saros feels like a natural evolution of what Housemarque achieved with Returnal, but with enough ambition to try to surpass it. The game refines the genre and takes it to interesting and exciting new places through smart design choices that aim to balance challenge and accessibility without compromising its core essence.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a brilliant third-person shooter that takes what worked in Returnal and streamlines it for an even smoother game without diluting the fun. The core gameplay is the star attraction; complex yet intuitive, and a perfectly judged challenge that's so satisfying to overcome. With compelling permanent progression, flexible ways to modify your experience, and an intriguing story to follow, this is another step towards Housemarque's planetary takeover.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is an outstanding action game for your PS5, but it requires a fair amount of patience and much love for the roguelite genre.
-
Apr 25, 2026Successfully applying the lessons learned during the launch and development phases of Returnal, Housemarque has delivered an exceptional title with Saros. Thanks to improvements made in both storytelling and gameplay, Saros is a truly polished and complete experience. It is a game that can be challenging enough at times to overwhelm the player, yet—through optional settings—can also be made accessible enough to allow players to follow the story and enjoy the gameplay at their own pace. With its entertaining action, rewarding gameplay, and magnificent atmosphere, an intriguing adventure awaits you in Carcosa. Join the ranks to salute the sun with Saros—a superb exclusive title that helps fill the PlayStation 5’s software library.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is a remarkably pragmatic evolution. It holds onto the spectacular bullet hell barrage and top tier gunplay that defined its predecessor, while making smart compromises to better fit mainstream playstyles. With a gentler difficulty curve and clear, intuitive progression feedback, it lowers the once-intimidating barrier to entry significantly. As a major tentpole in Sony's first party lineup this year, this game truly delivers an exhilarating, deeply satisfying alien odyssey for action-shooter fans.
-
Apr 24, 2026Housemarque didn't make Returnal 2. They did something harder and, in many ways, more beautiful: they looked their previous game straight in the eye, acknowledged its flaws, and fixed them one by one without losing a single piece of what made it special. Saros knows exactly what it wants to be from the very first second, and every design decision proves it.
-
Apr 24, 2026Overall, Saros manages to build a clear and coherent identity, even when not all of its solutions are entirely convincing. Housemarque pushes hard to evolve from Returnal, expanding the narrative component, strengthening progression, and introducing systems that seek to make the experience more modular and less punishing, without however distorting its roguelike nature. The Eclipse, with its corruption and constant impact on gameplay and atmosphere, remains the true nerve center of the experience: a mechanic that doesn't simply serve as a backdrop, but is embedded in every choice, every fight, and every risk. Not everything is perfectly balanced—some mechanics feel harder than necessary, and others are less refined than the overall ambition—but the end result is still a game that knows when to be spectacular and when to tighten its grip. And when Saros truly works, it does so brilliantly: turning every playthrough into a precarious balance between control and chaos, decision-making and improvisation. A formula that is not always indulgent, but which hardly leaves anyone indifferent.
-
May 4, 2026SAROS delivers a confident evolution of Housemarque’s roguelite formula, pairing exhilarating bullet-hell combat and exceptional boss design with meaningful progression systems that give each run a satisfying sense of growth. While its moment-to-moment gameplay consistently impresses through tight mechanics and smart use of haptics, the narrative struggles to keep pace, relying too heavily on logs and lacking cohesion in its delivery. Even so, the game’s distinct identity, strong encounter design, and engaging loop make it a compelling, if uneven, PlayStation experience that soars more often than it stumbles.
-
Apr 27, 2026So, did Housemarque dumb things down with Saros? Honestly, no. They just found a smarter way to open the game up to more players. The Carcosian modifiers let you tweak the difficulty however you want, which is a nice touch. But make no mistake, the game is still hard. It’ll test your patience, push you to the edge, and yeah, you’ll probably rage a bit. Because at its core, it’s still that same addictive loop : you fail, you learn, you try again. It’s frustrating, but also super rewarding. You quit and then come back five minutes later. Now sure, it’s a bit less brutal than Returnal. More structured, a bit more accessible. Some people will miss that raw edge, others will appreciate the balance. It does feel like it runs out of steam a bit after the credits, but overall? It’s still a really solid, intense experience. Not as groundbreaking as Returnal, but definitely a strong follow-up.
-
Apr 27, 2026Although Saros struggles with an ambiguous narrative and limited enemy variety, Housemarque's signature refined action and stunning cosmic horror visuals easily steal the show. By toning down the punishing difficulty of their previous title, the developers have crafted an excellent gateway for players who were previously intimidated by hardcore roguelikes and bullet-hell shooters.
-
Apr 27, 2026Saros is definitely a solid, challenging, and very well-executed game within the Roguelike/Bullet Hell genre. Although it features simplified mechanics reminiscent of Returnal, it distinguishes itself enough to keep fans of the genre interested. Visually, it is one of the most beautiful games in the recent history of this generation, featuring an interesting plot and frantic gameplay. Even though it no longer has the element of surprise, it is a highly recommended game.

Apr 24, 2026Saros refines the Returnal formula into something sharper, faster, and far more approachable. By turning chaos into rhythm with its “bullet ballet” combat, introducing meaningful progression between runs, and delivering a more structured narrative, Housemarque removes much of the frustration without sacrificing intensity. While limited level variety and a surprisingly subdued soundtrack hold it back, the core experience remains thrilling — especially during its spectacular boss fights. For fans of Returnal and newcomers alike, Saros stands as one of the strongest PS5 exclusives to date.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros features gameplay with frenetic combat and a raid system that encourages and excites the player to replay everything dozens of times before finally progressing through the game. Furthermore, its story offers an appealing universe and a foundation that can be easily explored in other titles and even sequels.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros offers an intense and highly addictive experience. Its world is impressive, its gameplay is exhilarating and the constant progression finally reduces frustration with each run. Furthermore, it boasts a well-told story, arguably more in-depth than Returnal's, which was already very well narrated. However, it's not without its flaws! Some bosses are less memorable than others, and some biomes are clearly less inspired than others... but it remains a brutal and extremely rewarding game.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is a phenomenal roguelike that would have been more notable had Housemarque not already set the bar so high with 2021's Returnal.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is a worthy and very respectable spiritual sequel to Returnal, and even though it may feel too easy at times or tiresome in terms of its main plot, as a whole it is simply an excellent, fun and addictive Roguelite action game, in the best sense of the term.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros confirms Housemarque's growth, building a spiritual sequel to Returnal that's more accessible, refined, and confident. While it partially forgoes the surprise element of its predecessor, the title stands out for its extremely solid combat system, a good evolution of the formula, and top-notch technical performance. Some concerns remain about its longevity, as once the campaign is completed, additional activities are almost nonexistent, leaving us with the regret of having to abandon too soon an experience that, given the quality of its gameplay and solidity of its structure, would have deserved to keep us entertained on Carcosa for a long time.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros turns bullet hell into a ruthless ballet, pushing you to play aggressively or get left behind. Set on a beautiful, hostile and ever-changing planet, it blends intense combat with a mysterious narrative that slowly pulls you in. It’s punishing but addictive.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is not able to outshine the spiritual prequel Returnal in every aspect. But at least when it comes to the most important part, the gameplay, it certainly is an improvement.
-
Apr 23, 2026While more accessible than Returnal, Saros is still a real gameplay knockout. Its overly cryptic world will likely leave many players in the dust, and the replayability typical of roguelikes isn’t necessarily there, but it makes up for it with a string of memorable bosses and new ways to utilize Arjun’s abilities. As with Housemarque’s previous game, this is undoubtedly one of the best PS5 exclusives.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is basically a sequel to Returnal in all but name. By building on the mechanics of its previous work, Housemarque has made Saros an even better roguelike and bullet-hell experience. It’s slick, powerful, and devilish in all the right places. The story wanes partway through, sometimes putting me on the verge of sleep, but masterful character performances from the main cast keep the sun from setting too early, and calling it a night.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros continues the brutal gameplay formula of Returnal witch success, but falls short in some aspects where its predecessor excelled.
-
May 7, 2026Saros is a fantastic roguelite shooter, although it doesn’t make quite the same impact as Returnal - mainly because of the many similarities between the two. It lacks that same sense of freshness, and its narrative layer isn’t nearly as captivating. Still, the combat, boss fights, and exploration of intriguing locations deliver an incredibly enjoyable experience that’s downright addictive. It’s definitely a game worth checking out.
-
May 6, 2026Saros is a confident convergence of Housemarque’s now signature style of gameplay and storytelling, elevating the studio into one of PlayStation Studio’s most reliable developers alongside Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Santa Monica and Sucker Punch. While the narrative framing fell a bit short this time around, I will be first in line for the next game from Housemarque, likely set on an alien planet, with a mysterious and personal story, dancing the bullet ballet with a host of creatures.
-
Apr 30, 2026Saros is a ton of fun to play, especially if you prefer a character leveling system to a ‘git gud learning patterns’ one. It is stunning to look at and has an excellent soundtrack. An emphasis on its weak story wastes some solid acting performances and an incredible art style. By the end of my 14 hours, I felt a tinge of disappointment at how close Saros was to being incredible.
-
Apr 28, 2026Even with a lackluster story and an uncharismatic protagonist, Saros has secured its place among the best games of 2026 so far, thanks to its addictive, challenging, and frenetic gameplay, featuring fantastic battles that showcase all of Housemarque’s brilliance and expertise.
-
Apr 27, 2026If you liked Returnal, you will love just about everything about Saros. This is a true elevation, with Housemarque confirming their genius in the ‘bullet hell’ genre. As games mature as an artform, there’s a particular joy in following developers so steeped in the medium’s mechanical history. An easy recommend.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros' narrative often feels at odds with the kind of experience it wants to be, but there's no denying this is another top-tier action game from Housemarque.
-
Apr 24, 2026It feels like one big adventure, and you’re only privy to one piece at a time. Delving into the depths of a foreign planet would usually be off-putting to me as a cozy gamer, but the world of Carcosa drew me in. Who is the mysterious voice lingering in Arjun’s head, what happened to the colony and the crew, and how in the world am I supposed to beat the tutorial boss on my next run?
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros multiplies the Returnal formula with a brutal shooter and mechanics refined to perfection. Unfortunately, this excellence comes up against an uninspired and disjointed narrative that interrupts the rhythm. Even so, there is an addictive mechanical heart that keeps you coming back.
-
Apr 24, 2026There’s so much happening during the action that you learn to focus on the centre of the screen, relying on reflexes and peripheral vision to take it all in simultaneously as the scene explodes. Saros asks a lot of you – you’ll strafe until your thumbs hurt – but it taps into something primal, pulling you into a flow state where even a screen full of flaming orbs spat by towering hostile aliens no longer seems that big a deal.
-
Apr 24, 2026Housemark hits the mark again, with yet another beautiful, challenging and chaotic bullethell action game. The story might not be the greatest, but the fluid, fast-paced action keeps the game engaging and entertaining all the way through.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is a sequel to Returnal in every way except name, and while it falls short in some aspects, gameplay-wise it's one of the best-designed third-person shooters out there. It's funny that they call it "bullet hell," because when you're dancing with hundreds of colorful proyectiles around you, sprinting, dashing, blocking and shooting... it's like heaven.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros shines in precisely the areas where Returnal already excelled. Unfortunately, however, its gameplay suffers from the same issues as the original. Regarding the story, though, the criticism has been addressed; following the narrative is now far less disruptive, as it no longer interrupts the gameplay flow of individual runs.
-
Apr 24, 2026A fascinating yet frustrating experience, driven by outstanding art direction and solid gameplay, but held back by its lack of challenge and distant storytelling early on.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros lives up to its name of being a bullet ballet in every sense of the word. It's a fast-paced, frenetic shooter adventure that never lets up from start to finish. While the story leaves a lot to be desired, learning the intricacies of each deathly dance with Saros' bosses is some of the most fun I've had in a video game in ages.
-
Apr 23, 2026I’d be glad for anyone who shied away from Returnal to find their footing in Saros.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a spiritual successor to Returnal, refining its technical aspects and accessibility. While sharing DNA, it's a distinct IP. The game features a more structured and less subjective story on the hostile planet Carcosa, where player character Arjun Devraj seeks answers and redemption. A key mechanic, Eclipse, transforms the environment and enemies, offering greater challenge and rewards. The innovative Soltari Shield encourages aggressive play by absorbing projectiles to power attacks. Saros addresses Returnal's punishing nature with robust permanent progression and a second chance mechanic, making death feel more like a rewarding restart than a setback.
-
Apr 23, 2026Saros is a full-blooded action game and an essential pick for anyone who thinks not everything has to be Marvel’s God of Wolverine: Forbidden West of Us 2 Remastered. It delivers an experience that simply does not exist elsewhere at this level of production, at least not on any other platform. Roguelikes may be more or less appealing depending on the player, but this is the kind of experimental PlayStation we always want to see.
-
Apr 23, 2026Even while sharing much of its DNA with its predecessor, there’s nothing quite like it. SAROS is a one-of-a-kind gaming experience that absolutely can’t be passed up, though it might be best waiting a few weeks for some kinks to be ironed out.
-
Apr 23, 2026A lean fusion of sci-fi action and eldritch horror that alternates between introspective narrative and madcap combat, Saros is Housemarque's largely successful attempt to broaden the appeal of previous roguelike Returnal without sacrificing anything along the way. The final result is pure atmosphere, and sticks with you in all the right ways.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros, while not without some notable flaws, is still an engaging, intricately crafted, and intriguing roguelike action game that sets a new bar for Housemarque as an upgrade to Returnal in many ways.
-
Apr 24, 2026SAROS delivers Housemarque’s best-in-class gameplay, backed by a genuinely intriguing narrative and a unique world. But it’s lacking polish, with performance and optimisation issues that are impossible to ignore for a game so reliant on precision. Arjun’s story truly gets its hooks into you and refuses to let go, but it’s difficult to give glowing praise in its current state. As it stands, SAROS is an excellent game that’s being held back from greatness.
-
Apr 24, 2026Saros is not a brave sequel. (And it is a sequel, by any reasonable definition of the word.) It’s a safe one: An attempt to improve on a stable core structure, shave off its more alienating edges, and make something more palatable for the masses. The result, then, is competent, successful, and disappointing in equal measure. Arriving at a time when the PS5 was desperately in need of a killer app, Returnal was a much-desired dose of shock and awe, a staggering blend of narrative bleakness and gameplay exhilaration. But now the shock has dissipated, and the awe has been spent. Saros is a more accessible game, in terms of both its play and its story, and there are merits to that approach. It’s a good game, genuinely. But it’s not a great one, and, worse, at no point while playing it do you get the sense that it wanted to be one; that great and terrible and beautiful hunger to be more that eats at, damns, and exults its characters never seems to touch its own heart. Which might be for the best! But it leaves the game stripped of anything you haven’t likely seen before—and as a follow-up to a game that frequently made the jaw drop, that’s its own little kind of hell.

Apr 27, 2026If you liked Returnal, I’m sure you’ll love Saros too. It is a very similar experience, so it doesn't have that same element of surprise anymore, but it is much more fast-paced, "on steroids", and filled with smart design choices that give it better balance and flow.
-
Apr 24, 2026For now, I’ll say Housemarque’s “house style” of tough-as-nails roguelike dipped in symbolism has managed to capture lightning in a bottle twice, and in a PlayStation ecosystem where Sony threatens to homogenize all its output, this studio maintaining what makes it distinct in the company’s catalog is just as challenging a feat as anything you’ll face in the game itself. Saros is a prickly, demanding game whose hours of physical and mental carnage will make it difficult to parse for some, but I keep diving back in and finding new philosophical and mechanical challenges to overcome each time.
-
Apr 24, 2026Being able to turn yourself into an overpowered king by flipping a few switches has its advantages. It gave me more breathing room to marvel at Carcosa’s ornate alien architecture. It let me try different artifacts and test out how a negative perk would mess with my play style. And it allowed me to get more aggressive in battle, which meant generating more glorious particle explosions that put my PS5 Pro to work. Even with my frustrations, Saros still had me glued to my controller as a work of pure sci-fi spectacle with an eerie atmosphere that bleeds out of your TV.

Apr 24, 2026Over the past 30 years, Housemarque has garnered a well-earned reputation for punishing bullet-hell shooters (see also Nex Machina and Resogun). Yet with Saros, you can feel the studio, now owned by Sony, wrestling with a conundrum: how to make the genre more accessible without diluting its essential, thumb-punishing essence. The game largely nails this balance, though its most arresting moments remain the deadliest.
