Fairytale adventure game in a beguiling open game world between Studio Ghibli, Star Wars and Zelda - despite technical stuttering a real action-adventure insider tip.

Shedworks has created a gorgeous throwback of an adventure game that settles the player in for a leisurely, minimalist voyage of self-discovery.

Sable’s ability to make the player feel so involved in such a hands-off approach to its open world is one that should be celebrated. The gameplay is a little one-note and the framerate can buckle under pressure, but it’s a game full of intrigue and wonderment that captivates you immensely. Not to mention exceptional cel shaded visuals and a zen like soundtrack that makes Sable enrapturing to explore.

Sable is a great attempt at making an open-world game without combat, but both on a technical level and in scope it comes up against its indie limitations. [Issue#23, p.76]

Sadly, some of the joy of exploration is dampened by the stuttering framerate which frequently gets a bit choppy, especially when wandering through busier areas. You’re also likely to encounter bugs with things like merchants not having any stock for sale or your hoverbike disappearing. Reloading the game does seem to fix many issues, but these little niggles do begin to get irritating over time. It’s a shame as, apart from these issues, exploring Sable’s strange and mysterious land is an absolute delight.

Sable is a game that settles on a relaxing tone with an interesting aesthetic. Unfortunately, it's inhibited by some technical issues and some plain quest design. Traversing the barren world can still be enjoyed. Despite its emptiness, there's a decent sense of discovery that's accompanied by a very mellow soundtrack. As it is, there's a good game here stifled by unpredictable performance and a lack of variety.

What I played seemed like it could be a good game (I enjoy the art style and the approach to exploration) but the performance is painfully bad, and I mean that literally. The game stutters constantly (it's headache-inducing). The framerate plummets from 60 to 20fps ... just as you're turning the camera sometimes. A lower resolution mode needs to be added to get a more decent framerate. There's also graphical bugs like flickering textures.

The developers seem to have no intention of fixing this game. Very depressing. Please remove this from the PS Store, Sony. Have some standards.

The Platinum trophy is a funThis is a great little game that rewards exploration and has a lot of interesting thing on the map to discover. The Platinum trophy is a fun one which is linked to the exploration involved in the game and is well designed.

The game really let's itself down with the poor frame rate and the various technical issues I've encountered. The fishing mini-game is an absolute write off because of how poorly the controls function. As I sit writing this review Sable is locked in the screen with her fishing rod out and I can't cast or come out of the fishing. I was planning on getting the Platinum for this bit because the Angler Mask and Vivarium trophies are part of it and the fishing doesn't work at all, I'll need to pass. Which is a major dissapointment.

I'd have expected this game with this art style to hold 60FPS or more on a PS5. Sometimes it's sub 20. It really takes you out of what otherwise would have been a really immersive experience.

It is a vehicle for the Moebius art style that is on display here. It is a beautifully written story with book-like inner dialogue and text narration that made me feel connected to Sable and her journey. Full Review »
