A lot of backtracking if you want to 100 percent it but for me it didn’t feel forced or convoluted. In my opinion the gameplay is right in the sweet spot between action and survival horror.

Soundtrack: I didn’t really notice it too much. Not bad but didn’t stand out. Audio: The sounds are well designed and detailed. A lot of work went into the guns, enemies, and actions that you do constantly throughout the game.

Visuals: The RE Engine on the ps5 is impressive. I didn’t notice any pop in or slow down but I’m also not looking for imperfections. The resolution and graphics seem great to me and there was only one time during the final boss that I noticed the pre-rendered cutscene differentiate between the gameplay that broke the immersion. Story: It is so unique and twisted where I did not see it going. It’s had me hooked. I could see how some would find it campy or too much. But it is a resident evil game. The game respects my time and that is important these days. I can pick up and play for small sessions or long. I can set save points strategically to try bosses over and over to get short times to complete challenges. I can set save points to play parts over to kill a ton of enemies with specific weapons to unlock more stuff. The game is a resident evil game through and through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The game has an excellent sequence of environments and evolution of enemy types, and the first half or so of the game is very spooky and scary. I was checking corners with my pistol or frantically fleeing a dangerous horde. The second half turns into more of a combat fest, which is fine because the VR gunplay is awesome!

I beat it in 10 hours on the casual difficulty, and had fun the whole time. I was still pressured to perform in combat, and there are many moments in the early game when you are frantically trying to reload your gun as an enemy is bearing down on you. Later, with experience, some massive enemy pops out and you, the now seasoned vet, pull open your coat, pull out an explosive device, throw it, grab the sniper rifle from your back, fire once, cock in a new shell, fire again- all fluidly, practiced, and business-like as if you are a professional monster-slayer. So, you develop into a combat god yourself as the game goes along.

100% worth the money and time. This is not just a game, it's a literal adventure to enjoy.

They surpassed themselves, this part is filled with plot twists, references, it is quite important for the franchise. The DLC gave a lot of plot and reflection. That was a great experience. And even though it seems "short", with around 10/12 hours to complete, I honestly feel it's the right amount, especially because you want to jump back as soon as the credits roll.

Easily this game features one of my most favorite horror sequences in gaming, and in entertainment in general. Its frankly that good but is over in almost a flash. It's also fairly early in the game, coming in around a 1/3rd of the way through. The rest of the game falls back on the action survival 1st person experience. It's done fairly well but really falls into an action first mentality, especially towards the final half of the game. While its not bad, I really wish we could have had at least 1 more horror segment of the game. As it stands, even with the amazing second area here, RE 7 was a much more horror-focused experience. But I'd say this was a better overall game. The overall story is fairly well done and sets up for many more games after this one, as well as some possible spin offs that might come about.
I'm very worried about how Capcom will handle those future elements. They've already come out and said they let off the horror pedal alot because of some backlash from RE 7 and it shows quite a bit here. It really makes me worried that they will discard it entirely, like they did with 5-6, and focus heavily on the action set pieces. I would still play those games as the action here is fairly good. But its clear that whoever is in charge of the horror aspects for this game knows what they are doing and it would be a massive shame if that element is taken away from the series yet again. Resident Evil became scary again with RE 7 and the horror elements here really show that they might be the best in the business when it comes to pure horror. I'm just afraid that the people who dont like horror might say this was too much and they will strip it from the next installment. That would be such a massive disappointment as its clearly the best part of these games.

While I don't think it's better than RE7, I do think that Village was bold enough to come close.

The two first things that astounded me when I pressed start on this title were the graphics and sound design. Capcom nailed it AGAIN with the RE Engine, as they have been hitting the perfect spots since 2017. The soundtrack might not be very memorable, but the haunting sounds and imagery of the village will forever stick with me.

After being in awe with Village's incredible presentation and set-up, I fell in love with the gameplay. Yes, the similarities with RE4 are all there, from gameplay, to pacing, mechanics and even story bits, but the biggest comparison should be done with RE7. Basically, RE8 carries over its previous installment's gameplay, but perfects it.
Every addition made to the gameplay loop worked perfectly. Ethan moves better, aims better, the Duke is not only a great character but also a fantastic shopkeeper, the ingredients system keeps you invested and everything else was well-developed in order to make the exploration and combat feel joyful to play. And they did it.
And not only exploration and combat were tweaked for the better, but puzzle solving too! Each puzzle feels light and not frustrating at all. Backtracking is rarely a chore and the interconnected levels are brilliant. I love this soft-puzzle-solving approach that Capcom has been taking the RE series and I hope they keep it up.
One other thing, this game was the easiest Resident Evil that I've played in a long while and while I don't think that this is objectively bad at all, I do recommend playing on harder difficulties if you enjoy the "survival horror" challenge.

Village's atmosphere is also one of the main things that kept me hooked. I felt that, like RE4 did in the past, RE8 manages to perfectly balance horror and action moments. Things get a little out of hand during the final hour, but it never felt out truly of place. Sure, it's not as scary as RE7 or RE2REMAKE, but it DEFINITELY kept me on edge and tense throughout the entire experience.
    **** that Beneviento ****

And the story: I also loved it!
Probably one of the craziest stories told in an RE game. Ethan, his family and even Chris are way more fleshed out than in RE7, and not only that, but the main cast is presented along with plenty stunning supporting characters. The Duke, Dimitrescu and her daughters, Heinsenberg, Miranda, Beneviento, Moreau and even Chris' goons or the poor villagers - they're all great!
Each area of the game is varied enough and fits perfectly with each villain. Environmental storytelling, packed with the stunning level design, was key to make it all work. Nothing felt out of place and the story benefits greatly from that. From beginning to end. It's surprise on top of surprise. And better yet - most of them were written pretty well!

Few things prevent this game from being the masterpiece that RE7 was. I'll be brief.
The thing that most bothered me is how little the story showcases its biggest strenghts. Despite being very good, Village has TOO MANY good things to show, and they do show them, but not for long! I just wish they expanded more about characters and the village itself. Especially during the final moments of the game.
Village didn't need to be longer, just... a bit broader?
The story also had the weirdest post-credits scene. If it wasn't for that, everything would fit naturally.
In my opinion, RE8 did little when they had a lot and RE7 did the opposite, which worked better.

Gameplay-wise, I didn't like the amount of missable items and areas. I mean, yes, if you miss them, it's your fault, but I wish there were indications about missing them other than the map.
And while the bosses were mostly very good, one of them felt a little too.... anime?
Also, the final hour of the game is TOO fast-paced. It does answer plenty of questions, but they say goodbye to the scary atmosphere and hello to FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. I didn't like that very much.
Oh, the Mercenaries mode! It felt ok, but not as fun as in RE4 or RE5. Shame, though.

I could spend hours talking about Resident Evil Village. It truly is an amazing game, with a few minor issues here and there.
Thank you for this game Capcom. Just give them your money, whether you're a survival horror fan or an action shooter freak.

    Now give us RE9, already.

Well-paced game but I feel like out of the 4 non-main bosses, the first 2 are more interesting so it's a little downhill from mid-point of the game. Graphics are good and there is a variety of gameplay so the game is not repetitive. Ammo is scarce enough that it's not a full on Call of Duty, and there are parts that emphasize hiding or running to survive.

Resident evil village is a mix of the old and a mix of the new.. This is a first person survival horror game with more of an emphasis on weapons than purely sneaking and sriviving.. which works in this setting, but I would’ve liked this to be more gradual.
Here once again like in resident evil 7 you play as ethan winters, searching for his daughter rose after their home is ambushed and the both of you are kidnapped, you find yourself in a village full of vampire meets werewolf character, and its so refreshing to not deal with lame zombies or mold creatures.. these enemies are terrifying when you first run into them… but I woulve loved a gradual lead up to actually getting some weapons in hand muck like in resident evil 7.. sneaking around this village, sneaking through the castle trying not to get caught as you got the items you needed, until finally you get a weapon, blast your way out of the castle and destroy the enemies in the village.. instead I almosti mmediatly felt untouchable.. which really killed the scary aspect of village for me.. there were definitely erie moments here for me.. but I never felt terrified the way I did in past resident evil games.. but as a more action almost first person devil may cry feeling game… village is great.. and I absolutely love the attention to detail and variety here… resident evil village is constantly switching up the areas as you set out to take down multiple targets in a vastly different setting from eachother.. theres so much to collect, find and upgrade like the older resident evil games, with the map color indicator letting you know when you’ve grabbed everything, and these a shop that just pops up along your journey to upgrade your weapons, buy ammo, or sell these crystals you pick up off of enemies, really giving you incentive to be aggressive here.. trying to afford all of the upgrades you can for your weapons..
Resident evil village does get a little lame and obring in its final stretch. .but they all do.. but not nearly as bad as 7 biohazard… if youre ready for resident evil to get back to the way it used to but don’t want to let go the creepiness first person adds to the series.. resident evil village is a perfect mix.. I do again just wish they tried to scare me a little bit more… much like in the maiden demo… more of that mixed into resident evil village, and this couldve reached masterpiece level..
    I give Resident Evil Village
    a 9/10

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
