An interesting cool idea that I feel would have served better if under a different name. Didn't really feel like a resident evil story. The plot gets very silly very fast and the gameplay scenarios felt sporadic. I feel a single setting (eg castle) would have been for more rewarding than this odd spread of areas and designs Overall a good title but left me wanting more.

Just more of the exact same: puzzles for the sake of puzzles, bullet sponge enemies. Just a different environment.

The atmosphere is completely non existent and 90% of the game lacks any sort of tension. The plot and the dialogue are flat out laughable. The story, boss battles, and time spent at various locations feel rushed. The enemies remind me of characters from lord of the rings or dungeons and dragons. The gunplay is clunky and very similar to RE7, which does not translate well for this type of action focused gameplay. The game itself is not horrible, but it’s far from RE2 or RE7. Don’t expect a horror game if you give this one a go and make sure that you play on hardcore difficulty (standard difficulty was a breeze). The action focused direction gives me great concern for future releases and I will be tempering my expectations for the conclusion of this trilogy. Expand

It has RE4's action focus with a lot of enemies, some bosses, and a merchant that lets you sell treasure and buy upgrades. Other times its puzzles, very scripted, slow paced horror nonsense reminiscent from RE7; that slows the pace down and will make replays dull.

I'm shocked Capcom felt confident to emulate a lot of RE4 but couldn't bring over the same satisfying combat as well; because the shooting in RE8 is pretty abysmal.

    - Movement is too slow and restrictive for a game that sometimes throws a handful of fast moving enemies that take up your entire screen.
    - FOV is too narrow to even get an idea whats happening around you most of the time.
    - Weapon sounds are underwhelming and lack punch.
    - Enemies have barely any hit reactions, so Its like I'm shooting with a pellet gun.
    - Didn't take the opportunity to add evasive moves, grab counters, melee attacks, etc to flesh out the combat potential.

I see no benefit to the first person view when it comes to the combat. The camera and movement are better suited for a slow paced horror game; with some enemies and arenas that would benefit if the combat was faster paced and snappy like action RE games. It just doesn't match well at all; Village is two types of games being forced into each other.

Even with the underwhelming combat, the middle section of the game is still great fun. I had a lot of enjoyment upgrading and getting most of the treasures. RE games shine when the player is left to their own pace. Little cutscenes, little dialogue, you are immersed in the gameplay loop and exploration. However it will probably take you about 8 hours to beat the game, so that middle section feels a bit too brief sadly; the game overall feels like it ended too quickly.

If I can sum up the experience it would be very fun in some places, but overall forgettable. Nothing really happens that's worth talking about. Story is lackluster, characters are underdeveloped/forgettable, music is serviceable, tone has no consistency, voice acting is hit or miss, combat lacks depth, and too many scripted parts for my liking.

If the combat was much more fleshed out, and if Village was a little longer to accommodate that, than maybe the gameplay would be able to support the game on its own.

I still wanna play more to see what the game offers, or at least to make the most out of the purchase. However the lack of depth in the gameplay and just thinking about replaying some of the slow portions sounds like a chore already.

RE Village doesn't know what it wants to be. Its a bootleg version of RE4 and its not exactly a great horror game either. It borrows from so many games that in the end it has little of its own identity.

If you insist on getting it, get it on sale.

The issue of the enemies is well achieved, but the difficulty is a topic to talk about, it costs you more to kill the lycanthropes than the daughters of the lady, the fight of the lady reminds me of the fight of Christ against the fly giant of resident evil 5, if it weren't for the characters, I wouldn't know that it is from the resident evil saga, I see it as just any horror game and the ending, well, each one with their own taste Finally to pass the time is a good game but it does not become a resident evil like its predecessors. The standard enemies are a huge improvement from 7’s molded as you actually gain from killing them as they drop loot necessary to make ammo, healing products and explosives. The villains are each interesting in their own right although I found moreau to be the comical intellectual stupid character who the group make fun of which is rather repetitive and who we literally got in 7 as Lucas. The negatives for me would be that the first area you go to other than the village it’s self is the gorgeous Castle that Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters inhabit I felt that the 3 other areas after this weren’t as good, 2 of them weren’t necessarily bad but no where near as interesting or creative as the first. I wasn’t a fan of Heisenbergs factory at all I found it very repetitive and mostly boring and more reminiscent of the boat section in 7 which I didn’t like either mostly for the same reasons. The boss battles where all intriguing but far too easy regardless of difficulty their patterns were very repetitive so therefore easy to figure out quickly. Overall I really enjoyed RE: Village enough to say it’s a good game but once again it has more than enough flaws to hurts its overall score. Expand

Maybe it's because I grew up in England, but I don't find castles scary. School trips to various eras of castles in varying states of repair mean that whenever I see one in a film or game it doesn't create any particularly eerie feelings for me. RE7 on the other hand with a decaying house in the swamps was horror territory right from the off. It's these tonal differences why I much preferred RE7. RE7 had a strong cast of antagonists that were a terrifying mix of body horror and insanity, mixed with the aforementioned setting and you had a really tense Survival horror game. RE8s Villains, by contrast, are much more Saturday Morning Cartoon like with their plans. We also have a mismatch of styles here from undead like creatures/Vampires, to werewolves, to dolls, to cyborgs, if anything it's a little too much and could have used a bit more focus.

All that said it is fun to play, the first 30-40 minutes is a little too much on rails as is the last hour or so, but the time spent in the village is pretty awesome. Exploring the Village is where the game is at its strongest and the way it opens up revealing more hidden secrets each time you circle back is always fun. The combat is pretty snappy, but against some larger enemies in enclosed spaces it can be awkward to position yourself whilst maintaining aim, that said I came into this off the back of Returnal which ties movement and aiming together perfectly, so it's not RE8s fault that it felt a bit clunkier by comparison.

I feel like I've been a little bit down on this game, but it is a lot of fun. It's nowhere near as tense or memorable as RE7, but if more tongue in cheek horror themes are your thing I wouldn't be surprised if you preferred this game to the previous entry. For me it was a fun game, but not a particularly memorable one. It is absolutely gorgeous at times though.

Thankfully they added something new and interesting to the RE franchise, otherwise this would be just another run of the mill RE game with better graphics and awesome set design. Aiming is still not the series' strong point, but at least we can see that Capcom became a company that cherishes its own traditions.

A highly polished game (minimal bugs, great graphics and animations, etc) that is nevertheless very mediocre. The game is at war with itself by trying to be a jack of all trades, but is a master of none.

It wants to be a survival horror style RE, but there are a million ways to procure health and ammo, be it through any drops, crafting, or simply just buying them from the Duke. Not to mention your inventory case which has enough space to hold every weapon, bullet, and healing item under the sun, made even easier because treasure, key items, herbs and other crafting items don't take up space.

It wants to be RE4 as well, but never throws enough enemies at you at once to really take full advantage of the massive arsenal you amass, and as a result combat becomes rather unengaging before long. A problem that's compounded by the lack of enemy variety or variety in enemy encounters.

There are multiple areas that are on the weaker side, or just a slog to playthrough (especially on repeat playthroughs) such as the opening and it's unskippable 5 minute (at MINIMUM) forced walking section, and the 2nd and 3rd main areas. As a result, you get a game that will, for decent stretches of time, will border on uninteresting or boring.

As far as story goes, it's nothing special. It's nonsensical and the characters range from mildly interesting to completely forgettable. The cast is nowhere near as strong as the Baker's from 7.
Post game, you unlock the Mercenaries. It's decent enough but it's not as fun as the mercenaries from 4, 5, and 6. You also unlock Village of Shadows difficulty, which feels like it's super hard just for the sake of being super hard. Personally, I found no enjoyment in it.

Overall, this is not a bad game. It's just very mediocre.

After having two titles followed by unrestrained action, the series returned to its origin in VII, what was great!!
But now, going back to follow the same path that drove fans away.
The great villain of the game, extremely cartoonish and theatrical character. Connections to history that discourage fans of the original Playstation 1 versions.
Even the Beneviento section, which has a great deal of terror. But it is psychological terror, running away from what RE has always proposed.
There are those who say that history does not tell in the RE franchise. To those, I recommend that you go and play the originals.

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
