Shadow of Rose is the main draw here, a 3-4 hour campaign with Rose all grown up as she tries to find a way to expel the mutamycete from her body. Some areas can be cramped and thus frustrating to deal with zombies because of that, as well as a frustrating stealth segment and time sensitive puzzle but her freezing ability is a fresh new mechanic that adds further depth to the core gameplay. Unfortunately her story just feels like a pointless waste of time. The 3rd person view in the main story works great, but feels like it should've just been a free title update instead. That leaves the added content in the Mercenaries mode. It's definitely more fun now with new unlockable characters and maps, and I do like the Onslaught gauge. Overall the package as a whole could've been better, especially Rose's copy-paste ending, and unless you are a diehard fan, I wouldn't recommend it until it goes on sale. Expand

I would have liked to see a little more in terms of new content with this DLC. The 3rd person perspective is almost a copy/paste from the RE 2/3 remakes and works as well as they did then. it is fairly unique to go through the original game in 3rd person but the novelty wears thin after awhile as you realize nothing else has really changed. I personally hope they keep the 1st person perspective for the next game as it really makes the horror aspect work much better then in 3rd person. However, for 20 dollars, this isn't too bad of a value here. The DLC will last you around 3-4 hours depending on if you want to complete it again. And the 3rd person does give the original game at least enough newness to go through it again, even if it's not as impactful. Not the best but not the worst and does well to close out an enemies storyline from RE 7. Expand

The level design is boring and repetitive. The dlc begins to be better after 2h30, but it last only 3 hours. It adds nothing new and the scenario is bad. Don’t waste your money, i regret buying.

Extremely disappointing after a 18 month wait for DLC. I finished Shadows of Rose in 2 and a half hours, and it was mediocre at best. I much preferred the actual game than this content. Resident Evil Village: Winters’ Expansion is a solid addition to Capcom’s beloved survival horror outing, even if it feels largely unremarkable. Shadows of Rose is a fun new story chapter, but it doesn’t do enough with its unique ideas, and it’s over too quickly, while The Mercenaries continues to feel inessential, even if it is admittedly a much better experience than it was when the base game launched last year. Third person mode, meanwhile, is an absolute treat, especially if you’re a returning fan looking to play through the game again from a fresh perspective. Taken together, the expansion might not be required reading- but it’s a decent stopgap to hold you over until Capcom drops the next meaty Resident Evil offering.

I will start with the bad one. The shadows of Rose dlc is short ~ 3 hours, but it is just a dlc. Of course, we all want dlcs like Witcher 3 had, but I don’t think it is that a big deal as opposed to length of re3 remake. And another major complain is reuse of locations from the main game, idk, I liked the main game, so don’t see an issue with it as well.

Now the good one: I indeed liked to story line. Many people claimed that it is the only positive thing about this dlc and this is probably true. But I repeat - it is indeed a very good plot. I enjoyed it much more than the original game, it will give you the last of us vibes, trust me ;)

Shadows Of Rose happens years after the Village. Rose was saved from there as a baby and now she’s a teenager. She has powers, such her dead father, Ethan, had. Rose wants to get rid of her powers and she travels to the consciousness of the Megamycete. It takes Rose to a mysterious place where memories are twisted and warped to a nightamerous form. She is back in the Village where everything started, back to the Dimitrescu Castle.

The story was rather interesting and it swallowed me wholy. The beginning was short and the main theme was the horrors of the mind of the Megamycete. The Castle was different. It was ran by the merchant from the Village -game. He wanted to stop Rose’s journey and he could control enemies to go after her. In the Shadows Of Rose there was new type of enemies; the “Face Eaters”. Theres also other enemies, but I’m not gonna spoil it.

Rose also was different from Ethan (the gameplay from the Village), she couldn’t use Guard, so there’s no guarding from enemies’ attacks. But Rose had something else, she had powers she can use against the enemies. She could freeze them for a short period of time. She also use her powers to unblock obstacles. All the powers weren’t given her in the beginning of the game, so it was gradually given to her which made the gameplay even better.

What was interesting addition to the game was a “ghost” that helped Rose. It gave ammo and health, and told me what to do and sometimes even where to go.

Shadows Of Rose also had some typical Resident Evil puzzles. They were easy, but I did like how the developer added something nostalgic to the game.

There were also other areas than just the Castle. The gameplay got even better each time I got thrown into a new place. There was even extremely psychological-horror area, which was rather similiar like in the Village -game. That was section where I was freaked out and even screamed a little.

Playing this whole DLC with headphones on, I gotta say, it was even more scarier. All the noises enemies made to the ambient sounds, it was all just pure horror.

Graphically the game looked next gen and as beautiful as the Village was. Technically there was zero issues; no frame-rate drops or other isssues.

I did die a at least five times. There was moments where I was pure in survival mode, no ammo and health low, but I just pushed forward. It also helped that there was checkpoints in addition to the manual saves.

Only negative what I did find, was the final boss. It really didn’t took much of effort to beat it. I was readied myself to die a lot and take the battle of my life. So, I think the whole game should be played in harder difficulties to REALLY amp it up.

    THE FINAL VERDICT
The Shadows Of Rose was about 3 hours long. It felt much longer than that, because the game was designed in a way that every new scenario was completely new. I did enjoy this DLC a lot and I’m gonna play it many times over. I really can’t say anything negative. The game played really smoothly and there was no hiccups or anything technical issues. Only negative thing were maybe that the puzzles were too easy and the final boss was also rather dull to beat.

The dlc was better than I expected based on reviews. They changed up a lot of the original game's settings to give a different type of gameplay which made it feel distinct from the main campaign. Some parts were quite a challenge. The enemies were a lot creepier. I enjoyed the side story.

Buena manera de alargar un videojuego que para mi fue lo mejor que juegue en 2021. El DLC de más de tres horas es más que suficiente y poder jugar en 3a persona es un buen añadido. Volver por Village para pasar miedo siempre se agradece.

Eh, for $30 dollars you could honestly dooo a lot worse. Actually pretty fun little addition to the Ethan Winter's narrative. Not like that good (in all sincerity) but fun n simple. Just some bonus fun tbh!

Not baddd by anymeans, just kinda mid. i don't regret spending $30 dollers on this. It's enough bonus content to make me wanna play Resident Eil 8 again.

I'm glad some people enjoyed it but for me I found it boring with all the reused assests from the base game and hazards that pop into existence whenever the game feels like it.

I miss being able to block like Ethan. Rose just stands there like a pleb and takes it to the face which can be a tad frustrating. I think I will try to get all the trophies and then never play this again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Winters Expansion is one of the most Disappointing DLCs for Resident Evil Village. While the Shadows Of Rose segment is a great Expansion for the story of the main game, The Entire segment is like the Worst with Clunky and uninspired Gameplay and Combat, Doesn't have a wide variety of Weapons, Not Scary at all dispite this game being a horror game, Very Short Story (The Shadows Of Rose Campaign Can be completed within 2 hours), Not Scary at all, Reused Cutscenes, Reused Maps and Environments, and a Forgetable ending with the same ending from the main game. While Rose is a likeable character, she can be very Cringy at times with various dialogues and voice acting. Even Roses Death animations are uninspired and pure cringe and I wish it was more like the Death animations from The Callisto Protocol. The Mercenaries Additional Orders is a Step up to the Right direction with New Characters and many different ways to play. While the Third person gameplay for the main game is also a great way of playing the entire story with a new perspective, Cutscenes transition to first person and some segments in the game are not Scary. Overall, this expansion is the worst to the series. It's a shame that The Mercenaries Additional Orders was included in this expansion and should have been a separate DLC for the Main game. The Shadows Of Rose Segment is a Complete Waste of your Time. I do not recommend you to buy this expansion, instead, save that money for other great Resident Evil games in the franchise or Save that Money for The Callisto Protocol or Dead Space Remake in which these two games are way better than this expansion. Truly a Disappointment after 18 months of waiting. Expand

Resident Evil Village was in my top 3 games of 2021 and the announcement of its DLC, Winters’ Expansion, had me itching to return to the horrifying locations we first explored last year.

    STORY

The horror game has us take control of Rose, the daughter of Resident Evil 7 & 8’s protagonist Ethan, who is trying to live a normal life as a teenager. Unfortunately, she is struggling to do so as she is working with Chris Redfield’s unit and living with powers from the megamycete. Rose finds a way to remove her megamycete powers and in turn finds herself in a darker version of the village we all know and love.

The 3-hour journey throughout the Shadows of Rose DLC is fun and well worth the price tag. The narrative, however, isn’t expanded on that much and doesn’t provide any added closure that the base game provided. That said, I loved getting to know who Rose is as a person, considering we spent the entirety of Resident Evil Village trying to save baby Rose.

    GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is expanded on ever so slightly. Rose unfortunately is only equipped with a pistol and a shotgun, with a few upgrades on the pistol. A new mechanic is her megamycete powers, which allow her to freeze mold enemies and destroy mold structures. It was a welcome addition to the game which made the combat feel a lot more refreshing than what I was expecting. Playing the game in third-person mode felt right, I had almost forgotten that RE7 and RE8 were experienced in first-person. I think the game is best enjoyed in first-person, however, I can see why the option was added.

I thought journeying through familiar locations like Castle Dimitrescu and House Beneviento would have had a comfort to it, but boy was I wrong. If you thought House Beneviento’s mutant baby was terrifying, you have no idea. Without spoiling the area, I’ll just say one thing. It was one of the most terrifying parts of Resident Evil I have ever played.

The Mercenaries Additional Orders adds new stages to the original Mercenaries mode which accompanies the new playable characters quite well. Joining Ethan as playable characters in Mercenaries mode are Chris Redfield, Heisenberg, and Lady Dimitrescu. All of these additions add a bit of flair and versatility to the mode, but it probably won’t grab your attention if you were never a fan of this mode.

    THE VERDICT

While Resident Evil Village: Winters’ Expansion didn’t expand on the story as much as I would’ve liked, it was still a thrilling addition to the Winters’ saga. The many gameplay additions and the return to the most beloved locations of the base game make this a DLC worthy of purchase.

What should be a suspense genre game has turned into a short-story about a girl with literal superpowers getting harassed by highschoolers. It's a very cliché 'coming of age' story about someone 'accepting certain things that they don't like about themselves despite what others think or say.' Now, I wouldn't mind such a thing if the story was told in a compelling way that actually makes it so the player can relate and sympathize with the protagonist (Rose), but it would seem that many of those in charge of the execution of said premise decided to cram so much teenage angst into the plot that there's little else to the story other than the ever-present concept that is 'dead dad, me sad.'

It makes sense that the protagonist is a teenager, because this entire DLC plays out like a highschoolers fanfiction.

At least the other parts of the DLC weren't bogged down by such pitiful storytelling.

Third-person camera mode and new The Mercenaries content is something you would have expected to get from a big free update. Sadly both of those features are locked behind Winters' Expansion pack which also goes with Shadow of Rose - a new story-campaign that is shorter, modest and generally worse than everything else Resident Evil Village has to offer.
