By combing the best elements of boomer shooters of the past, the frantic action of DOOM, the rugged look and feel of Quake, and the arena shooter layout of Unreal Tournament, Bounding Box software has crafted a fun shooter that harkens back to the old days while still feeling fresh. While the noticeable drawbacks I mentioned keep it from achieving true greatness, I cannot recommend this game enough to anyone who wants to revisit the times when shooters could just be fun.

Despite some flaws regarding progress and also enemy variation and AI, Prodeus is an excellent shooter inspired by the first FPS we had. Intense action, outstanding fun and delightful to play are the great qualities seen here.

There's no denying that Prodeus is derivative, but that's not necessarily a problem when the end result is this well realised. An absolute blast from start to finish.

It’s hard to ignore this spin-off’s squandered potential – or the deafening silence of Midgard. While we have great fun mixing and matching a wealth of combat options, we can’t recommend it based on that single verse when this game boasts an epic poem’s price tag. [Issue#21, p.83]

The haptic triggers on PS5 are ridiculously fun, especially the dual-wielded SMGs. If you have even a passing interest in FPS games this is a must buy! Expand

Looks old and new at the same time. And it's beautifull. Music is fine. Gunplay is awesme. Story is... I do not remember the story, just as ILooks old and new at the same time. This game is how that should be looked like. Expand

The amazing enemy sprite work makes blowing everything apart 3x more satisfying. You CAN turn them into 3d models, but only someone who really hates themselves would do that... Makes me wish Quake had the same option. Seriously, I'm on level 22 now and there hasn't been a single level that I didn't rate as "good". (You can rate every level as good or bad after you win). It pulls off what it's trying to do flawlessly. I f***ING love this game.

    Ultra juicy. Would bang.

Prodeus is an outstanding take on classic boomer shooters. It's an interesting idea of taking the frantic gameplay of modern Doom but applyingProdeus is an outstanding take on classic boomer shooters. It's an interesting idea of taking the frantic gameplay of modern Doom but applying the old-school aesthetics of 90s shooters. I have a couple nitpicks like the confusing map design and linearity of the levels rather than being able to backtrack, but it generously offers a level select overworld at anytime in between progressing through the campaign as well as using collectible ore to buy new weapons and abilities at the shop as an encouraging incentive for replay value. Combine this with a very well-accessable level creator for players to share, and you have yourself one of the best and mindlessly fun indie shooters of all time. Expand

The game feels great to play, almost all the weapons are fun to use, most of the enemies are fun to fight or at least satisfying to kill, and the level design feels intuitive and rarely leaves you scratching your head on where you're supposed to go next (although some of the collectables are a pain if you're a 100% kind of person.)

The only real downside in my opinion is the game peaks about midway through then coasts on a baseline of extremely enjoyable run and gun action but never really evolves in the latter half; the levels remain interesting and fun to clear but you're really just doing the same thing over and over.

Also, the movement tech like double jump and dashing should have been unlocked from the start, or at least way earlier in the game, once you have them you can feel that that's how the game is intended to be played.
