Aug 12, 2024Nobody Wants To Die is everything I wanted it to be and more. It felt like a 1920’s detective thriller in the future and I loved every second of the mysterious twisting story that had me gripped until the very end. Stunning visuals that can compete with any AAA game on the market and a gorgeous soundtrack that helps heighten the tension and mood really seal this game as one of my favourite experiences this year. Its linear structure will not be for everyone and its short length left me wanting much more. But for a first attempt for Critical Hit games, this is a slam dunk. I just hope they return to this fantastic retro-futuristic world they have created.

It is a tad bit too linear, and it will not pose much challenge or diversity when it comes to gameplay, but it will surely give you that dose of neo-noir you have been searching for.

The voice acting is also strong, making for a solid adventure that does some new things. There is little to criticize about the game per se, although the lack of chapter select is a shame and the textures are sometimes of somewhat low quality.

Jul 24, 2024I feel that it is a very decent game and that it should be tried, but it is also not the work that is going to change the industry in the narrative game genre; For that, its development studio still has a way to go. The advantage is that it is not a full-price title, so if you want to venture out and buy it, I would say it is a good idea, especially if you like works that bet almost everything on the story.

The gameplay is limited to crime scene analysis and the developers have not dared to trespass; rather, they infused the investigative mechanics with contextual hints that make the experience quite guided, but no less enjoyable.

Its impressive world is enjoyable to explore and the story kept me interested enough to see it to its conclusion although it is very linear and the writing could definitely be improved.

Jul 24, 2024We immediately like Nobody Wants to Die for its controlled and simply sublime cyberpunk film noir atmosphere. We come back for the fabulous choices of staging, the animated universe and the gargantuan settings in which we could get lost for hours. The game nevertheless suffers from a handful of flaws in its narrative, its frustrating gray areas and the absence of a journal in which we could have kept track of convoluted affairs. The walking sim remains pleasant to navigate as a whole but its few mechanics are also regrettably too interventionist.

Jul 23, 2024Critical Hit Games' debut title is a graphic adventure capable of building a fascinating setting, certainly indebted to the imagery linked to the cornerstones of the genre, but with a unique personality thanks to the aesthetic and musical references to the United States of the 1990s 40. Nobody Wants to Die reduces the possibilities of its gameplay to the bare minimum, forcing the player to simply reach for the different indicators on the screen, to focus everything on a story that unfortunately does not develop in an orderly manner. A verbose exposition tends to dampen interest in a setting that would have worked better by leaving something to the imagination, while the plot finds complete meaning only through one of the four available endings, while the other three fail to fill several gaps in a slightly confusing script.

We can assume with a trailer and a few images that this will be a narrative adventure with a powerful graphics... And that's true. But it's also a story that touches on very interesting sci-fi themes, as well as keeps the tension up until the final stretch. [Recommended]

Jul 23, 2024What surprised me most in my time with Nobody Wants to Die was its deep lore. The premise of a future without death isn’t just a shallow idea that starts the mystery, it’s a moral and ethical quandary that Critical Hit Games investigates at every turn. In 2329 New York, we hear talk of bodies as literal government property. That’s as horrific an idea as you would imagine, and the game digs into this with further details like drinking and smoking being illegal so as to not ruin a body for its next owner, a subscription fee you must pay to use your body, and the emergence of a new death kink for rich people who can afford to buy poor bodies and take them over just to get killed in for a quick high before returning to their old body. It’s a biting allegory of wealth inequality and how rich people see poor people as a literal commodity to control. Learning more about this world is one of the best parts of Nobody Wants to Die and the flavor text you can find is full of interesting tidbits that only add to your understanding of the crimes at its center. This game came out of nowhere for me, but its tightly paced film noir mystery is built on such a fascinating world that it’s quickly become one of my favorite sleeper hits of 2024.
