Infinity Nikki, even in this early phase of its lifespan, is utterly essential – assuming you can stomach the twee, whimsical tone to it all. Its cosy vibes will prove an acquired taste, but its attention to detail and commitment to keeping the player engaged during every minute of exploration is impeccable. Moreover, its visual presentation is up there alongside the best you’ll find on PS5 – an extraordinary achievement for a free-to-play game that also miraculously runs on mobile. Some control quandaries and an abundance of proper nouns prevent it from achieving perfection, but these are minor blemishes on an otherwise outstanding experience.

While its gacha mechanics feel predatory, Infinity Nikki is a blast in most other aspects. Finding and dressing up in various outfits is fun, and the open world has a ton of variety. The story is surprisingly interesting too, even if it has a few too many lulls. Infinity Nikki feels like the ultimate dress up game, and it’s only going to get bigger from here.

Infinity Nikki completely blew away my expectations out of the water, and it’s worth checking out, especially when you consider the game is free-to-play.

It's beautiful, charming, there are plenty of activities and entertainment in the big world and a real feel-good game to enjoy. However, you have to be aware of the sheer amount of systems and currencies that are almost constantly trying to squeeze money out of the player, and fair enough they are there, but there are so many.

Infinity Nikki is a true gift, although it's not a game for everyone. Despite featuring a story that feels lacking, its beautiful open world and Nikki's immense wardrobe come together to create a package that brings joy to the soul and peace to the mind.

Infinity Nikki stands as the embodiment of any little girl's video game dreams, but it does its work so brilliantly and passionately that it transcends the boundaries dictated by such a target audience, thus succeeding in enthralling anyone who doesn't have a heart as hard as stone.

Infinity Nikki is a cozy exploration game with solid dress-up mechanics and appealing visuals, despite its iffy console performance and annoying gacha system.

I suspect that because I refuse to pay $500 for a digital dress, my interest in Infinity Nikki will disappear the moment I miss out on getting a particularly attractive costume from one of the limited events. But then I’d be better off just waiting for a Nikki figure to come out with my favourite dress on it instead anyway. I can see myself becoming a big-time collector of Nikki figures, and I love the character and what Nikki represents outside of the monetisation. However, the monetisation is inexcusable, even by the standard of exploitative gatcha games. No video game about collecting dresses is worth more than it would cost to buy the actual dresses in the real world. What’s more, when you let the monetisation undermine everything that the creative side of the game is aiming to achieve and suck the joy out of the fundamental mechanics, you’ve just broken your project.
