Excellent game! The exploration is super fun, the environments are really pretty, and the combat works well. You really feel like a student running through the Hogwarts countryside. The small negatives would be the camera is too close, and the combat targeting can be off at times

So the main game and the story not being a rehash and mix of plot points form the books would have been at least worthy of some respect. Instead this game gives us a macguffin and 26 measly spells. The macguffin is the end point of the game and it's ancient.

Combat is where I really laughed a lot at the game. Forspoken got a lot of deserved criticism but its spells looked better and even the combat felt slightly better than this point and shoot. Though what really made me laugh at the combat were idiotic mechanics where the spell has to be the same color as that of the shield to break the shield. The mechanics and the purpose of the spell be damned, the color is what determines duel outcomes. Every complex and compelling magic system I can think of, like Oblivion or Magicka has been respectful of their audience to give them more. The fact that games not based on magic have more variety and quality in their spells catalogue than Hogwarts Legacy is both insulting and amusing.

The open world is not really open if one examines it closely. The aesthetics are decently done but that would be a very insignificant plus point as opposed to gameplay in that world feeling hollow. Once you scour the countryside a bit more, you realise that the so called open world is anoter exercise in Ubisoft open world shenanigans. The difference is that a modern Ubisoft Assassin's Creed has still more to offer than Hogwarts Legacy. Granted that's because of Ubisoft flinging more quantity and getting a few lucky shots, but in this race to the bottom, I can only draw these forms of comparisons.

The only bits funnier than the combat system are the reviewers insisting that there is build variety in the game. I expect this game might get microstransactions in the future and some more minigames because well the fans of hte franchise are very easy to exploit and gaming fans even more so, as EA and Activision have continually demonstrated over the last decade or so.

This game lives entirely off of the Harry Potter franchise, and is in itself a very ordinary and an outdated adventure game. The world is extremely static, like a matte painting, and reminds me of Dead Island, where a sand castle could block a truck in full speed. You can only interact with pre-selected objects and a narrow selection NPCs, that gives you extremely boring chores. Calling them 'side quests' is a huge overstatement. The story is generic, unoriginal and shallow in every way. The best part is the combat system and world design, but Hogwarts is over-interpreted and feels like Hogwarts on steroids, it's over-sized, bulky and americanized. The gameplay feels orchestrated with low immersiveness, just like an old cartoon where only the highlighted objects on a matte painting are animated. The loot system is especially ridicoulus, with gold chests placed the most ridiculous places; right on the street or directly in front of NPC's and the chest owners, who doesn't mind you robbing all of their galleons. The story is so meager a 10 year old could write a more in-depth narrative. If Avalance Software spent their money on creating depth to this game, instead of bribing youtubers to get unrealistically positive reviews, this would might've become a game worth of a release. Dull writing, dead in the face characters, and boring missions. If this would have came out in 2012, maybe it would have been something. If you're a fan of the franchise, then you may enjoy it, but otherwise just another mediocre RPG that hopes it's name recognition will sell.

The enemy variety is not very good (specially when it comes to larger enemies and mini bosses) but with the fun combat I still enjoyed the encounters. I think one part that they could improve a lot was the classes that you attend during the game. In most of them you don't have many interactions and you just watch a cutscene which made the classes uninteresting.

Overall the main story of the game was ok. There wasn't any crazy moments or plot twists and you could predict most events. I really liked the main characters of the game and I didn't expect to like any of them when I started the game, but as I played more and more, I started to actually care about them. However, I really wished that you could interact more with them and do some extra activities with them outside of the quests.

The map design and environments were amazing, specially the Hogwarts castle. In most quests you will visit a different and unique location and there were many locations that I would just pause and look around. In addition, the way that they used the room of requirement was very smart. You could customize everything, create potions, grow plants, and keep your pets there and use their feather for your upgrades.

I think if they keep the core parts and improve the weak aspects, the next game is going to be goty level. My score for this game is 8 and I recommend it specially if you are a fan of the series.

    (9) Superb. Just shy of gaming nirvana, this score is a high recommendation because the game reviewed is head-and-shoulders above its competition.

Feels like the wizarding world. If you liked the world from the books and the movies, this is for you too. This game does everything very well and you can explore the world you read about. Hogwarts and Hogsmead are here for you to explore in detail. The game is pretty polished, I haven't run into any glitches so far, breathe of fresh air.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is great. I'll admit, it has its flaws - which I'll get into in just a bit - it was a fun 30 hour experience. I haven't technically finished the whole game as of writing this as I'm at the final part of the game in the House Cup and need to reach the level required.

I love the combat in this game. They really did their best to make the game a challenge with what spells to have equipped and how to equip them. The combat flows well from enemy to enemy and even on the easiest difficulty, things still felt like there was a general challenge.

Puzzles are another thing that I want to talk about. I didn't like a lot of them. Many were just common sense and you just had to use your head. But many puzzles I found annoying and confusing. One in the Natsai side quest storyline, I had to flip a box on its side to climb up the side. At the time, I had never had to do this, so it felt weird to have to do. Another was during Rookwood's Trial. There was a part where I had to move a block to climb onto a bridge but I couldn't get the block to move. Eventually I figured it out but it took a lot of time and I still don't think that was how it was intended to be done.

Now for story. While writing reviews for my YouTube channel, I've always been looking for whether a game made me care more about the characters than the story, and this game did just that. I was so invested in finding out what happened with Sebastian and his storyline. You could tell the devs put a lot of time into making sure people cared about Sebastian. Now saying that, I think Natsai got thrown under the bus in this game. Like, an interesting character but there just wasn't enough motive and want to find out more about the character. The story follows your character as they discover their ability to wield an ancient form of magic. You find out others before you used to be able to do this and take their trials to learn to harness this magic and defeat an evil Goblin named Ranrok who has started a revolution against wizardkind for their mistreatment of Goblins. The story is very compelling and quite fun to play through. I really wanted to find out what happened next each time I completed a story quest and I loved it all.

There's a good 30 hours of gameplay but I have well over that. There's a lot of stuff to do after you've completed the game. You can get all the spells, complete all the side quests, find every field guide page, and so much more. I'm still discovering new stuff and I don't plan to set this game aside forever.

I hope this review helped. All in all, if you're looking for a great Harry Potter game experience, BUY THIS GAME! If you're looking for an amazing open world adventure for multiple days of play, BUY THIS GAME! It's amazing and I at least think you should watch someone play it before you buy it, or ask a friend who has it if you can play a save file on their device before you buy it.

I got to say though, after finishing my playthrough of Hogwarts Legacy, the game was not what I expected at all.
While the story's premise sounds decent on paper, the execution is... really bad; the vast majority of the main quests are either fetch quests and filler, making the pacing pretty much non-existent, and the story itself is filled with laughable amount of conveniences. Also, having to level up by doing chores in order to unlock main missions is tedious.
Same goes for the characters; they're just very bland for the most part, and unfortunately, same goes for the gameplay as well; it's just not fun, the combat is very easy and completely mindless, the RPG elements are very shallow, and it doesn't help that the enemy and dungeon variety is lacking. At least some spells are kind of unique and useful in different ways.
However, the visuals are amazing for sure and the presentation is very good too! There are some technical issues at times, but the game looks beautiful nonetheless.
As for the side-content, Hogwarts Castle is definitely the highlight of the game despite feeling a bit repetitive; it looks impressive and it has many collectibles and puzzles to find, while the rest of the world feels empty and boring.

    Pros:

However, the main story is almost meaningless and your friend's quests turn out to be the most interesting and plot-deep things in Hogwarts Legacy than this whole "epic" around ancient magic.

The most annoying thing for me (and I wonder why practically no one mention this), it's how empty our protagonist is. He has absolutely zero backstory. How he got here, where he was before, who he is, etc.

Even Mary Sue Aloy from Horizon has her origins, her upbringing history and still feels like more or less a living person.

On the other side, our protagonist from Hogwarts Legacy is just a dummy, a mannequin for wearing different robes, doing other people's errands and listening to other people's stories.

The story was good but could have been great in my opinion if more students were involved in the main story and had more mystery behind it like Harry Potter is mainly known for. Also, I wish there were more choices and options with multiple endings like the Witcher whether you choose to go dark or not. Perhaps even a dating mechanic. More unique boss fights would be nice. The devs have obviously put a lot of care and love into the recreation of Hogwarts. The music/graphics and environmental details around the world are absolutely great and in the first few hours it gave me the same sort of cosiness I got from the movies when I was a teenager.

However, the same care has not gone into the gameplay design. They've basically just cribbed gameplay systems from many other games and slapped them all together. Not only that, they have taken what I consider the worst most hand-holdey aspects of game design. It's like they think the players are total morons. A perfect example of this was when I was asked to solve a 'puzzle' which was a blank picture frame on the wall. I spoke to the NPC who told me the exact spell to cast on the picture, which revealed a scene of a place in Hogwarts that you obviously needed to find. "Nice I thought, I'll keep an eye out for that when I'm wandering" and took a screenshot. But no...it immediately gave me a quest marker to the place I needed to find, which was about 10 second walk away. Incredibly poor game design.

The rest of the game is like this, it requires no thought or effort and even when doing main quests you tend to just be following a quest marker to the next spot which is literally a 2 minute walk down a linear corridor. It's such a strange decision to think players are so stupid and can't figure anything out themselves.

Also, the voice acting and writing is absolutely god-awful. Watching the character interactions is like watching an episode of Love on the Spectrum minus all the heart and humour.

I think this would be a great game for people who really love Potter and also don't play many video games but for everyone else, stay the hell away.

It's been a decade since we've had a full Potterverse game, but the wait has been well worth it. Hogwarts Legacy gets just about everything right, with its involving storyline and myriad of main and side quests. Perhaps its finest feature though is Hogwarts itself, providing as much joy in just exploring the halls as performing set tasks. We doubt a single Harry Potter fan will be disappointed. We certainly weren't.
