I’m not really sure what my favorite part of Heidelberg 1693 was, really. I love the aristocratic time period, the colors and varying environments. The ending is a hell of a lot of fun as well but I won’t spoil that for you. If you are a fan of platformers or even on the fence about them, this is one of the good ones that will win you over with its looks alone.

Heidelberg 1693 is a hard game and will not be to everyone’s liking. Just like old school platformers it shows no mercy and forces you to “git gud”. The replay value is pretty high, and the most dedicated players are rewarded with a Hard Mode that makes things even more nightmarish. Even though the musket mechanic is fresh and enjoyable, the game itself does not reinvent the classic formula. Those who remember fondly Castlevania or Ghost ’n Goblins will have a blast playing Heidelberg 1693, and the chance to revisit their childhood traumas.

Heidelberg 1693 stands out for its disturbing atmosphere and a universe full of nightmares, but at the same time it shines visually, the game fails to offer a good playing experience. It lacks content and more attractive features.

When it’s firing on all cylinders, the weird and wonderful world of Heidelberg 1693 provides an exhilarating challenge that evokes the glory days of the genre, all punctuated by fantastic and imaginative boss design. If you’re willing to look past the frustrations that present themselves at times in the form of uneven balancing, then Heidelberg 1693 will provide a few hours of horrendous fun that genre fans will lap up.

Heidelberg 1693 is a savage 2D action-platformer that gives you plenty of gruesome eye candy which hopefully will keep you playing when the difficulty spikes start to test you.

Heidelberg 1693 is a neat action platformer with some memorable enemy design and boss battles, but it often feels as if the level design is at odds with the limitations of the weapon that sets the game apart. Still, I feel suitably proud that I managed to finish it and it still comes recommended for fans of titles like Ghosts n Goblins.
