Gynoug is a classical arcade style shooting game that went by the name Wings of Wor on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis back in 1991. Its a fun side scrolling shooting game with added Magic and some modernised features like infinity lives, god mode etc

The game features sub bosses and final level bosses through out the game. Lots of different enemies flying and shooting across the screen which can at times get a little messy with the action that you will have no idea where to go without taking damage.

To be honest, I played this game with God mode on. Which means I never died or took damaged and it too me approx 48min to complete from start to finish. Without using the cheats, it would take a lot longer to finish. Yes there are health and power ups through out the levels to obtain.

The game features a nice little soundtrack that I had to turn down as it kinda got on my nerves a tad. The visuals are what you expect from a classic slide scrolling shooter. Even tho I played this game on the PS5, I found the dualsence controller to be very very responsive to the movement of this game, nice and fast is what you need to move around and avoid the damage. I would trade that tho to play this game the way its meant to be which I believe would be perfect on a Arcade setup stick and buttons layout!

If you enjoy these types of games, then I would recommend picking Wings of Wor now known as Gynoug up!

If you’re not a fan of shmups – whether upwards-scrolling or side-scrolling – Gynoug isn’t likely to win you over. It’s a fairly easy Platinum, but other than that, there’s not really much to recommend it.

Ratalaika's port has the helpful inclusion of cheats to retain weapons, and the advantageous option of infinite magic — so you can hold two buttons for double firepower of regular shots, alongside experimental magic attacks like the Energy Ball or Thunderbolt. This allows greater customisability of the original's steep difficulty curve.

Wings of Wor; oops, I mean Gynoug... is a solid shoot 'em up from the golden age of the genre with a clever magic system, stand-out bosses, and there are now interesting cheats to help modernize it all. So, if you enjoy shmups then give it a go, why not?
