The most complete game in the franchise, Gundam Breaker 4 is a pleasant social experience that offers endless possibilities for mecha customization. More geared towards multiplayer than single-player, it has a tiresome and disposable campaign, but it is very rewarding and capable of delivering progression in a surprisingly organic way.

Gundam Breaker 4 is likely a dream come true for any fan of the franchise. The ability to customize your Gunpla down to the smallest detail makes this game ideal for long-time collectors of models from the series who can’t wait to experiment with the endless parts available. However, the game is not without its flaws, which are hard to overlook, even for die-hard fans. For instance, while the combat is enjoyable due to the variety of builds you can create, it feels underdeveloped in several areas. Additionally, most missions follow a similar structure, leading to a sense of repetition early on. The story is nothing remarkable, though younger players might find it appealing. On the other hand, the multiplayer component could be a significant plus if you’re able to find a well-coordinated team to play with.

Gundam Breaker is a huge step up for a franchise which was apparently doomed to oblivion: still an arcade game at heart with a repetitive stage selection and a paper thin anime plot, it features a crazy amount of customization options for a solid combat system which will make fans of Gunpla happy.

Gundam Breaker 4 is a return to what the series does best. It doubles down on its core gameplay loop, offering hours upon hours of fast-paced grinding, topped off with impressively deep customisation and build options. Repetitive, but undoubtedly addictive.

Going into Gundam Breaker 4, you need to accept that it’s the type of game that will involve grinding missions for experience and parts. I felt like the ensuing Gunpla I’d create and opportunities to collect even more customization elements was worth it! Especially since the combat system is tight and it all looks really good. If you’re not up for replaying a lot of assignments and dealing with occasional hurdles in fights that might feel better balanced for multiplayer, it might be wise to look at an older entry. But it can be a really good time, especially if you love the Gundam and this spin-off series or have a crew you’ll be playing it with.

Enthusiasts of the series will find plenty to like about the Gundam building and mindless combat, but those seeking a more well-rounded title will be disappointed.
