I am happy to announce that I am a new fan! I was willing to adapt to what the developers wanted me to experience, and even to the hours I lost due to bugs. Gothic is an open-world action RPG that I want to recommend to everyone without an asterisk. It’s a fantastic and beautiful world, filled with challenging enemies, engaging gameplay, and a sense of wonder I haven’t felt in a long time. However, playing on console was less than ideal, and in my opinion, it should’ve been released only on PC as a timed exclusive so that a proper console version could be released later. I feel like I’m saying this too often lately, but this game is a must-play for fans of this genre. Just wait a bit until it’s been ironed out.

Technical issues aside, Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful recreation of a beloved early 2000s classic. A fun, nostalgic adventure that is as punishing as it is janky.

Gothic 1 Remake honors the classic by maintaining and improving its core elements. The slow progression is compensated by a clear evolution of the hero, while the challenging combat and dark setting shine in the new graphics engine. However, Unreal Engine 5 introduced bugs and performance drops that await correction. Furthermore, the chest-cracking minigame is excessively complex for the title's purpose.

With its numerous new features, changes, and improvements across the board, the Gothic remake modernizes the experience without losing any of its charm or difficulty—a balance that's not easy to achieve. Right now, it's difficult to recommend due to the number of bugs, but if it improves over time and you're looking for a classic RPG experience, don't miss it.

The Gothic Remake is a sincere labor of love dedicated to one of the pillars of Western role-playing games. Alkimia Interactive accomplishes an incredibly difficult task: it modernizes the combat system and expands the narrative, while keeping strictly intact the ruthless, raw, and punishing soul that made the 2001 classic immortal. Unfortunately, hindering this fascinating return to the Colony is a faltering technical performance, plagued by system crashes and mediocre optimization. It is a title with heart that pays homage to the original and boasts an unaltered charm. It is highly recommended to both veterans and newcomers alike, provided you have the patience to endure the heavy stuttering of the graphics engine or are willing to wait for the inevitable corrective patches.
