Gothic 1 Remake

Gothic 1 Remake succeeded in preserving the spirit of the original game more than attempting to fully modernize it - a decision that gave it a unique identity but also left many of its old issues intact. As a result, the experience carries a special charm for longtime fans, yet it suffers from clear flaws that prevent it from reaching the level it could have achieved had it dared to redesign some of its core foundations.

Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful retelling of the original Gothic, warts and all. Perhaps too ambitious for its budget, it offers even hardened gamers a truly unique, hardcore roleplaying experience. While weighed down by a litany of bugs and issues, there is a lovingly made product underneath – but it’s hard to recommend in its current state.

Gothic 1 Remake definitely deserves praise for preserving everything good about the original release and for its revamped visuals. However, that isn't enough to excuse its poor performance and dated combat, facets crucial to the experience that actively prevent it from being easy to recommend.

The Gothic remake is sure to appeal to long-standing hardcore fans, despite its quirks, but newcomers should be fully aware of what they’re getting themselves into. Namely, an atmospheric hardcore role-playing game with plenty of rough edges – but also plenty of charm.

Smudged on all sides with technical bugs, crashes, audio failures and performances mishaps, the best of Gothic 1 Remake's qualities only just manage to shine through the grime. While there's a truly compelling game nestled under the surface, this nugget of ore needs more sprucing up before it's ready to be sold on.
