Feels like a game prototype that the devs never bothered to finish and just released for a quick buck. Extremely short, very little content, no depth to gameplay, no story.

Ghostrunner offers beautiful, finely detailed visuals which takes place in a dystopian setting in a Cyberpunk style world. The game runs beautifully on PS5 at a silky smooth 60fps with Raytracing, or if you would rather have 120fps you can do so, but without Raytracing. I much preferred the 60fps/RT because it ran extremely smooth and looked super gorgeous most of the time. Coming in I thought it was going to be all about the combat and movement(which it is), but I didn’t expect a full story, and this game has a good one that I found to be very interesting with some great voice acting. The Star of this show outside of the beautiful visuals and divine movement/combat is the soundtrack!!! The combination of all three is perfection. This is hands down my biggest surprise game of 2021 and I hope more people play it. 9/10. High replay value! Expand

This game is fast paced and punishing, but gives you a sense of accomplishment when you get a perfect run. Story could be better, and it’s a bit buggy. Overall an awesome experience and will give you a challenge if you’re looking for one.

This is like the Titanfall 2 time trial if it wasn’t good. Wonky feeling controls as you wall run, jump, bullet dodge (one hit and you’re dead) and slash your way through levels you have to memorize in order to get through. Thank God I didn’t pay for this. I deleted it from my system after 15 minutes.

I'd give this just a decent score. Graphically impressive for a mostly indie title (although 505 backed it and they are huge now.)

The game has sort of wonky controls that I'm still getting used to as I play more of it. Will I beat the game? Probably not. But I could see this kind of game being a decent playthrough for people into speedrun/one-kill games. One final note: The 120 FPS

    One final note:
The 120 FPS mode is pointless on a 4k TV as it looks like they took all sense of texture and design out of the game in it. Awful looking on that.

    Re-review:
Okay i see where people say the game lacks. The controls really hurt you about 20 minutes in. Complete trash of a game if this is the best they could do for controls and how the game functions. Does feel like an incomplete demo.

Full disclosure: I got this from PlayStation+ for "free", I played through 90% of the game in assist mode, I'm an old man by gamer standards, and I think 6/10 is a good score or at least not a bad score. Somehow I made it through the first few levels. There was a lot of trial and error and mostly error. The game is basically a platform puzzler but in the vein of Super Mario the Lost Levels. As in, this game is super difficult. Only after getting stuck at really hard spot did I realize how the assist mode works. You have to choose "level select" and then select your assist options. The most salient option for me is slowing down time. The extra shield also helps. Huge time saver. Now I feel like I am playing the game in the way I think it was meant to be played.

The action is based around running and never stopping. Not just running, but running at oblique angles from combatants so they can't shoot you. The a.i. is not brilliant, and if you look at the a.i., the a.i. will likely shoot you regardless of the angle you are running. For me, this kind of actions harkens back to some of the shareware games of the early 2000s that took games like Unreal Tournament to the next levels. You might think Call of Duty is a fast twitch shooter but Call of Duty is slow compared to some of the PC shooters from back in the day. The problem for me is that I was never good at those games. Even in my prime, I was slow. Now that I am an old man, forget about it. 505 Games deserves a lot of praise for including assist options in Ghostrunner.

Ghostrunner brings back checkpoints and quick reloads after death. This seems to be a lost art in today's world. Some checkpoints are lengthy. You have to find a path to take out shields and then enemies all without getting hit once (or twice in assist mode). A third person replay feature would look cool (or not if you stuggle to grapple hooks and jump like me). This is not a free flowing action game like in the trailer. You have to stop to plan, take the right path, and step into slow moving elevators. That loss of freedom is part of the problem with this game.

The controls are terrible. In another sign of a lazy PC port, the developer did not decide on a control scheme. Instead the player has to select one of 5 preset layouts or opt for a custom control scheme. I opted for a custom control scheme. Even though I played a lot of Halo, I never picked up bumper jumper (R1 to jump). I'm just an old school press X to jump kind of guy. I should also be able to press X to grapple with my laser rope. Instead, grappling has to be another button. Jump and grapple would feel good and keep the flow, but if you know PC games then you know that developers for PC games like to use the entire keyboard. Dash also feels week as does turning quickly only to overshoot the ground from your frictionless momentum and fall off a ledge. At least the wall running is really sticky.

The story in the game is not much. Everything is told through audio and I have been tired of audio logs since BioShock 2. The game world is made up of rearrangements of the same dozen building blocks. There are no set pieces like in a triple A game. At least the game is light on your hard drive which is a major bonus these days. I have no qualms with no frills double A games, though the lack of a compelling story means that a game is much more likely to wear out its welcome.

All in all, Ghostrunner is not a bad game. There is certainly an audience that craves this kind of fast twitch, perfect run experience. This might have been me 20 years ago. This type of game is also a nice palate cleanser between 100 hour open world titles. I would prefer more freedom. Ghostrunner does not feel alive in the way it should. If anything, I feel like jumping back into Halo and running and gunning through Silent Cartographer. That was game that really rewarded momentum.

Addictive! Very hard, one shot and your dead game which I dislike. Once you get the controls down it gets intense. Completing a run is very fulfilling and it might take 50-100 trys but when you complete something in this game it feels great. Im running my game on performance mode and have not had 1 issue. Great music also.

What I Dislike: AI can display erratic behaviour sometimes which can be frustrating, even with the instant respawn. Not the biggest fan of the skill system. Boss fights are extremely underwhelming. Quite a short game with a predictable story and anticlimactic ending.

How It Stacks Up: I like it more than Mirror's Edge, which was about momentum and puzzle solving. This game is more about precision platforming and optimizing routes. It is a mix between Mirror's Edge and games like Super Meat Boy. In terms of ports of PS4 games go, this one is quite good and benefits greatly from the increased performance. Worth checking out since it's included in PS+ Extra and is a small download. You'll know after the first 30 mins whether you'll like it enough to see through the 7 hours it takes to beat the game.

Ghostrunner is one of the most polished, gameplay-focused experiences in the cyberpunk genre. It is more than an enjoyable and decent challenge, especially if you're an avid gamer. If you die, it is 100% your fault, so you must try every single strategy that comes to your mind to break the loop. But once you master all the elements of the game's combat, it becomes very satisfying. And I think that's the peak, priceless moment of this amazing game.
