From its quiet contemplative moments, taking in the aurora borealis atop the peaks of Mount Yotei itself, to the nail-biting assaults on castles or liberating towns from Saito’s grasp, Ghost of Yotei was an excellent experience from start to finish…Usually, when I’m finished with a review like this, the last thing I want to do is hop back into a game I just spent weeks playing almost by myself. Yet, even as I type this, Atsu is playing her Shamisen overlooking the Ishikari Plains, the work of the Onryo not yet done. And I can't wait to dive back in to finish what she started.

However, there are still limitations that betray the legacy of the past, including stealth that is still lacklustre and outdated exploration mechanics. Overall, it is a game that is entertaining and engaging, greater than the sum of its parts, but one that prefers caution over revolution.

Working your way through lists in a video game can be incredibly satisfying. Ghost of Yōtei understands this intimately and capitalizes on it by starting with protagonist Atsu literally writing out her hit list of the six men who took everything from her. Developer Sucker Punch has produced a fantastic realization of Ezo/Hokkaido, a region of feudal Japan that we don’t get to see a lot of in games, let alone explore in such detail. Along with fun combat, quests, and progression systems, Yōtei will keep a lot of gamers busy, not even taking into account the free co-op multiplayer modes coming in 2026. A must-play for fans of open-world action-adventure games, and a worthy, albeit safe sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.

Seriously, when is Sucker Punch going to make a John Wick game? All told, I’d say this is some of the sleekest, tastiest action I’ve seen from the big budget space in a long, long time.

A new region of Japan, a new protagonist with an interesting background, kickass combat, and an overall complete package. Whether Yōtei will get an expansion or extra content outside of the already announced “Legends” mode, I have no idea, but as it stands, Ghost of Yōtei is a great experience deserving of your undivided attention, especially if you enjoyed Jin Sakai’s journey in Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch have done it again and released a powerhouse of the PS5’s roster.

All the characters have depth and personality, including the villains, climbing feels better, missions are more varied and have worthwhile stories, it explores the indigenous Ainu people, their traditions and customs, and the impact Japan’s wars had on them, and the performances from the cast are excellent in Japanese and English (Erika Ishii oozes cool, and I’d go as far as to say this is Noshir Dalal’s best performance ever). Yotei is a massive step up and easily Sucker Punch’s best game yet.

In Atsu, we have a haunted protagonist, someone trapped between two states of being. On one hand, the warrior who wishes only to feel the splash of blood upon her face as her blade finds its home in the heart of her enemies. On the other, the young girl who cannot help but wonder who she would get to be if the demons and the flames had never devoured her family on that faithful night. Perhaps, somewhere in the tale of the onryō, there is room for both.

Ghost of Yotei offers some of the most beautiful visuals we have seen in the medium, period. The audiovisual aspect of the game is of top quality elevating greatly the whole experience and immersing the player to the Japanese setting. Once again, it's visceral combat is the highlight of the gameplay accompanying rightly its well-written revenge story. All in all, Sucker Punch delivers one show stealer for PS5.

We explore Ezo and engage in fantastic boss battles with new weapons and abilities. In some places, the game even manages to capture a sense of dread. Considering the good performance and excellent graphics, the lack of repetitive open-world events and some minor flaws are easy to overlook. While the game currently promises countless hours (45 hours for me) with its single-player story and world, it also promises much more with its multiplayer mode, slated for release in 2026.

With writing that hits every note with precision and heart, “Yotei” understands how, throughout history, stories about ghosts hold us in their sway. Like Atsu, and like “Yotei” itself, a ghost lingers, refusing to let go as it draws us into the darkness.

Ghost of Yōtei is a worthy sequel to the already excellent Ghost of Tsushima, building upon that game's foundation with an equally interesting (albeit quite different) plot and select improvements to combat and open world exploration. It may feel a little too familiar, not to mention similar to the previous game, but that sensation is quickly forgotten amidst all the fun you'll have in Ezo.

Sucker Punch has once again created a beautiful samurai story. Its strongest points: graphics, a new arsenal of weapons, the path of revenge against the Yotei Six, and the wonderful Atsu.

While Ghost of Yotei isn't the great game it appears to be in its first few hours, it's an excellent action-adventure game that marks a nice evolution from Ghost of Tsushima. Here, Sucker Punch studio takes a nice - even a very nice - step forward in terms of open world, notably thanks to a central play area that offers sumptuous panoramas and an impressive draw distance, and a constant generosity in terms of secondary activities. Even after 50 hours, we were still surprised by unexpected encounters and events, giving the feeling of evolving in an organic, living world. A sure bet on PS5.

While Ghost of Yotei shares similarities with the first game, it's a production that builds significantly upon it. The game has a Western vibe, which is particularly noticeable in the bounty hunting missions. While it may lack depth in character development and presentation, it's a very good action game overall, with its fun gameplay, sword fighting, and graphics. If you liked the first game, I can say you'll love this one.

After more than 60 hours spent on the lands of Hokkaido, juggling main missions, side quests, and endless exploration, the answer isn’t simple. Sucker Punch plays on two fronts: technical conservatism and artistic boldness. Of course, the game isn’t perfect: some mechanics feel recycled, climbing remains archaic, stealth can be frustrating, and technically, you can tell the engine has its limits. But Ghost of Yotei more than makes up for these flaws with its world, storytelling, atmosphere, and that rare feeling of truly losing yourself in a dreamed-up, poetic, and simultaneously violent version of feudal Japan. In short, Ghost of Yotei isn’t a revolution, nor a breathtaking technical leap. It’s a respectful sequel, sometimes conservative, yet one that manages to elevate the original experience through its artistic direction, immersion, and narrative. It’s a game to be savored as much as played, one that delights, moves, and, above all, reminds us why we love virtual feudal Japan: for its landscapes, its mood, and those unforgettable moments when you truly feel like a part of the story.

While I don't think Ghost of Yotei quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, it is another worthwhile trip to a lawless Japan. It sports a tonally distinct and cinematic story, a visually diverse open world chock full of activities, and is another fantastic showcase for the power of the PlayStation 5.

However, the side quests are less memorable, the map can feel overcrowded, and UI nags break immersion. It’s an evolution rather than a revolution — but a highly polished and captivating one that fans and newcomers alike shouldn’t miss.

Ghost of Yotei offers a vast world that compels us to explore, thanks to its incredible visual appeal and a series of simple ideas that effectively ward off the taint of repetitiveness, despite some elements of the offering feeling a bit stuck in the past. Slashing with the Yari, mowing down enemies with dual blades: it's easy to feel like a warrior thirsty for revenge in Sucker Punch's game, which displays genuine attention to all the "important" details and boasts some truly addictive combat. There are stories worth discovering on the map, as well as situations worth experiencing, but unfortunately the plot on which Atsu's journey of revenge is based lacked the courage to dare and some appropriate attention to character development. In any case, a stop in Ezo is a must for fans of Jin Sakai, and in general, anyone looking for a gripping and evocative adventure would do well to take on the role of Onryo.

Five years ago, Ghost of Tsushima pushed the PS4 to its limits and left a lasting impression with its historically inspired open-world epic. Visually, narratively, and in terms of gameplay, this interactive love letter to the work of director Akira Kurosawa, the grand master of the samurai genre, was so good that it rightly earned the status of “classic.” There were some flaws—perhaps inherent to the open-world genre—but the result was an open-world game that you'll happily lose yourself in for 100 hours. For Ghost of Yotei, all of the above still holds true, but you'll want to put 200 hours into it. It sounds disrespectful, but Ghost of Yotei is a sequel by the book and therefore, in essence, more Ghost of Tsushima, but ‘better’: with more weapons, more variety of enemies, and even more beautiful grass – because what an incredibly beautiful game this is.

Ghost of Yotei is more of what made Ghost of Tsushima so compelling; terrific combat, a memorable protagonist, and a gorgeous world playing host to it all. It's not perfect, there are a few edges to this sword that could have been sharpened, but there are not enough to take away from an incredible experience. I cannot recommend it enough.

This might be a straightforward tale at heart, but it has absorbed me more than any other historical action game. Even hours and hours in, I still feel a flicker of excitement whenever Atsu purposefully draws her sword at the beginning of a battle. I will be sad to see the end of it.

But as a sequel, it lacks a bit of the novelty that Ghost of Tsushima had, and while many elements of Yotei are objectively stronger, just a bit of its shine wears off after a few dozen hours of formulaic open world design.

It’s a sequel that sticks closely to what worked in the original game, with an emphasis on its engaging open world and even more stunning visuals. Yotei refines the mechanics, increases variety, enhances attention to detail, and better defines certain narrative dynamics. The result is simply a game that works well and does exactly what it’s supposed to: entertain all those players looking for a new open-world, free-roaming action adventure in which to invest a few dozen hours. Clearly, this isn’t the place to look for a new benchmark or that extra something that boldly sets it apart from any other title in the genre, but five years later, anyone who wants to relive the Tsushima experience will feel right at home here, before the crackling of a warm and reassuring fire.

Sucker Punch may be playing it safe, but the fantastic world and effective revenge plot still give Ghost of Yotei its own identity. It's still a series with clear limitations, exemplified by the monotonous mission design and old-fashioned stealth, and it's disappointing that Sucker Punch has not done more to rectify these issues, especially since they also plagued the first game. But it certainly has its qualities: from epic duels to exploration built on curiosity, it serves up both the fantasy of being a vengeful spirit and a flesh-and-blood person with dreams of a better life in an excellent way.

Ghost of Yotei is a very safe sequel to Tsushima. In terms of gameplay, it builds further on what Tsushima already did well. It innovates little in that regard, but it does address every issue I pointed out in my original review of Ghost of Tsushima. On paper, that’s fantastic. Unfortunately, because of its stronger focus on the main character, Ghost of Yotei loses sight of the story of the world around her. Ghost of Yotei matches its predecessor well, but because of its missed storytelling opportunities, it fails to surpass Ghost of Tsushima.

While it follows the formula set by its predecessor, and one might say set before by Ubisoft, some added freedom and a more engaging plot make this the better game, but not by much.

This is an experience that walks, talks, and carries a customisable sword like every other triple-A game, but it looks damn good doing it, and is a lot of fun. Surely with a game like Ghost of Yotei, that's all you're looking for, and Sucker Punch is only too happy to deliver. It's not the best triple-A game of all time, but it might be the most triple-A game of all time.
