Ghost of Yotei excels in design that speaks through experience rather than spectacle, with its flashback system seamlessly connecting story and exploration as it shifts between past and present. The field prioritizes density over sheer size, making even detours feel like an integral part of the world. The narrative, while framed as a single tale of revenge, gains depth from the presence of factions such as the Matsumae clan, the Ainu and the Six of Yotei, giving the stage more weight than the previous installment. While combat is still centered on the sword, Yotei introduces a wider variety of weapons, with mastery sequences that heighten its polish. Rather than finding flaws, one is overwhelmed by its craftsmanship and overall quality.

Ghost of Tsushima walked so Ghost of Yotei could run. Yotei beats Tsushima in every category, with better graphics, better music, better gameplay, and a better story, despite the occasional narrative lull. Ghost of Yotei is the kind of game that you can't stop playing, and when you're not playing it, you'll be thinking about when you can play it again. It's a masterful open world game and one of the best exclusives on the PS5.

Ghost of Yotei fufills much of the promise of Ghost of Tsushima, delivering a hugely enjoyable open-world game, that almost rids itself of Tsushima's bloat. Pacing issues and some underdeveloped villains asside, Yotei improves on the original game in every department, and delivers best-in-class visuals and music.

A true love letter to classic samurai films, Ghost of Yotei is wonderfully presented and an absolute joy to play. Its stunningly-realised world will have you immersed from the outset, spurring you to explore and discover its secrets in order to develop Atsu into a fearsome ghost. And its combat remains thrilling throughout.

Ghost of Yōtei is a great, but still somehow safe sequel, a little bit like Horizon Forbidden West was. Then again, it's been years since the previous entry so yes, this is certain to please fans of Tsushima too.

Ghost Of Yotei is a triumph of all artistic disciplines in the video game medium. A devastating narrative hook will quickly lead to 50+ hours of riveting adventure.

Ghost of Yōtei is that rare sequel that not only maintains the essence of its highly successful predecessor, but also qualitatively leapfrogs it in just about every meaningful way and metric. Underscored by a grippingly furious tale of revenge inspired by a layer cake of classic Japanese samurai cinema, the best combat ever seen in a samurai title and the most compelling open world since Red Dead Redemption 2, Ghost Of Yōtei is a jaw-dropping demonstration of Sucker Punch Productions operating at the peak of its considerable powers. Ghost of Yōtei redefines the term ‘must-have’ and wholly validates PlayStation Studios broader approach to embracing single-player epics such as this.

After more than 300 years a ghost returns, but now, manifested as a vengeful spirit. Atzu takes upon the role of onryō to finally avenge her family, as she has sworn 16 years ago. Her homeland of Ezo is vibrant, expansive, full of surprises and wants to be explored. So, while acquiring a set of Katanas, Ōdachi, Yari, Kusarigama and other tools, she slowly climbs up the ladder of names that make up the Yōtei Six. And naturally, the cloth with all their names just keeps getting bloodier and bloodier.

Ghost of Yotei is a generational masterpiece, encapsulating everything great about the open world adventure genre. This is a beautifully written and directed saga that stands tall alongside its influences without ever sacrificing the joy of gameplay and discovery at the hands of spectacle. It is one of the best games on PlayStation this generation.

Ghost of Yotei is one of the best games I've ever played. From top to bottom, beginning to end, it is the epitome of what Triple-A game developers should strive for. It completely delivers on all fronts - combat, narrative, visuals, world-building, and audio. But, most importantly, it's simply a ton of fun. Sucker Punch Productions has raised the bar to a seemingly insurmountable height. When it's all said and done, people will look back at this generation and regard Ghost of Yotei as a true magnum opus. It's games like these that remind me just how special the medium can be.

Sucker Punch leaves nothing on the table with Ghost of Yotei. This game represents everything we were promised the PS5 could deliver and then some. Every aspect of its artistry, mechanics, and technology is used to the fullest in perfect balance. No one part of Ghost of Yotei outshines the rest, and that's because each component bleeds into the others so naturally that they cease to feel like disparate elements. Atsu's journey is one that will stick with me, but not because of the magnificent world I explored, the memorable cast of characters I grew to love, or the dramatic swordplay. Those are all different colors used to paint the complete picture that is Ghost of Yotei. All are strong on their own, but together form something much greater.

Ghost of Yōtei builds on its predecessor’s essence, delivering an intense tale of revenge led by a new, compelling protagonist inspired by the best of the genre. The game blends more dynamic combat, engaging exploration, and stunning visuals. While it doesn’t reinvent the formula, its seamless combination of elements creates a cinematic, addictive, and deeply immersive experience.

While it's ridiculous that PlayStation Studios only delivers one or two games a year, Ghost of Yōtei is the perfect example of how teams like Sucker Punch are true masters of their craft. The title does everything a sequel should, and the result is one of the best experiences of the year. While the title isn't perfect, Atsu's journey is captivating, and it makes clear that this anthology model the studio has created has the potential to expand indefinitely.

Ghost of Yōtei surpasses its predecessor in every respect—from its meticulously refined mise-en-scène to combat systems and polished side quests. Yet compared to the sharp conflicts that defined the earlier narrative, its more straightforward storytelling may feel somewhat simplified.

Ghost of Yōtei is a phenomenal achievement in open-world design, being every bit the spectacle that players should expect from Sucker Punch’s prior efforts. Though it shares the fundamentals of Ghost of Tsushima‘s combat and navigational loops, Atsu’s open-ended journey allows players a gorgeous, profound sense of freedom. This is a world where players are invited to soak up every detail and bask in the natural, vibrant beauty of Japan, becoming lost in each new story.

It’s hard to follow up on what is considered by many (myself very much included) to be one of the finest Samurai epics in video games. Yet Ghost of Yotei improves upon nearly every aspect of its predecessor; it’s easy to say that Sucker Punch once again knocked it out of the park with this one. From its quiet contemplative moments, taking in the aurora borealis atop the peaks of Mount Yotei itself, to the nail-biting assaults on castles or liberating towns from Saito’s grasp, Ghost of Yotei was an excellent experience from start to finish…Usually, when I’m finished with a review like this, the last thing I want to do is hop back into a game I just spent weeks playing almost by myself. Yet, even as I type this, Atsu is playing her Shamisen overlooking the Ishikari Plains, the work of the Onryo not yet done. And I can't wait to dive back in to finish what she started.

Ghost of Yōtei is an improvement on Tsushima when measured by almost any metric. The beautiful open world is dense and invites exploration, the combat is tighter and more varied, but it’s Atsu’s personal, honest story of revenge and self-reflection that makes this an unforgettable masterpiece.

Ghost of Yotei checks all the boxes, particularly through a main storyline that hooks you from the very first moment and continues to build powerful emotions. Despite being a story of vengeance, its many familiar moments transform it into a deeply human tale, allowing you to connect with the characters on a profound emotional level. Additionally, there's a wealth of secondary content that genuinely adds depth to the world, rather than feeling like mere filler. While Ghost of Yotei has some minor flaws, it is undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2025 and a video game that deserves to be a strong candidate for Game of the Year.

Ghost of Yotei is a confident sequel that grows from its predecessor in smart ways, with a bigger, bolder, more beautiful world to explore every nook and cranny of. Atsu is a strong lead, and her journey of vengeance takes some compelling twists and turns, while Edo Japan provides a true bounty of interesting side quests, charming characters, neat distractions, and wonderful secrets across what feels like a truly epic adventure. With entertaining combat and visuals that are among the best seen, Ghost of Yotei balances its violence and beauty delicately, offering a strong experience from the team at Sucker Punch Productions: an entirely memorable journey, and an action-packed, stunning adventure.

Ghost of Yotei delivers a cinematic samurai tale anchored by Atsu’s compelling revenge arc, a stunning world, and a revamped combat system that swaps stances for distinct weapon sets with clear color-cue reads. Smart touches like filmic presentation filters, musical abilities that summon a wolf ally, and a faster, less repetitive open world keep the pace high, while strong audio work elevates both drama and action. NPC faces can look weak, the lack of hard lock-on leads to occasional whiffs, and a couple of minor bugs popped up, but the fluid weapon switching, satisfying duels, and memorable finale make this a standout evolution from Tsushima’s template.
  24. 94
Ghost of Yōtei is definitely a better game than Ghost of Tsushima, but I believe that it’s not just an improved GOT but rather a new game built on the foundations of Ghost of Tsushima. This game really lives up to the expectations and even goes higher, and the only thing that is keeping it from getting a perfect score is some minor issues with stealth and parts of the story.

Ghost of Yōtei is an ambitious project, capable of capitalising on the success of Ghost of Tsushima while building its own identity, rooted in the cultural context of the Ainu and 17th-century Hokkaidō. The protagonist, Atsu, is a highly successful character: strong, consistent and driven by clear motivation, she carries the narrative forward with intensity without ever seeming like Jin's female counterpart. The combat system evolves the formula of its predecessor, adding variety and a faster pace, while the game world is rich and dense, rewarding exploration with both concrete upgrades and narrative ideas such as the bond with the Wolf, one of the best-realised ideas. Aesthetically and sonically, the title reaches one of the peaks of the current generation: from visual filters with great personality to an inspired soundtrack, to consistently theatrical art direction, Ghost of Yōtei knows how to enchant with continuity. However, there are still limitations that betray the legacy of the past, including stealth that is still lacklustre and outdated exploration mechanics. Overall, it is a game that is entertaining and engaging, greater than the sum of its parts, but one that prefers caution over revolution.

Working your way through lists in a video game can be incredibly satisfying. Ghost of Yōtei understands this intimately and capitalizes on it by starting with protagonist Atsu literally writing out her hit list of the six men who took everything from her. It’s a simple, but incredibly satisfying setup, and that core idea – the joy of knowing your objectives and completing them – extends to every other element of Ghost of Yōtei to create a consistently satisfying experience that is very difficult to put down.

Developer Sucker Punch has produced a fantastic realization of Ezo/Hokkaido, a region of feudal Japan that we don’t get to see a lot of in games, let alone explore in such detail. Along with fun combat, quests, and progression systems, Yōtei will keep a lot of gamers busy, not even taking into account the free co-op multiplayer modes coming in 2026. A must-play for fans of open-world action-adventure games, and a worthy, albeit safe sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Yotei is a consummate revenge game with which Sucker Punch dares to present an open world with good ideas that come close to fitting together perfectly. Dazzling in its visuals, powerful in its narrative, and sharp in its combat. Yotei is almost as precise as a katana slash.

Ghost of Yōtei is everything a sequel should be. Sucker Punch took the acclaimed foundation of Ghost of Tsushima and built something bigger, more refined, and more daring. Atsu’s story is intense and deeply human, the combat introduces new strategic layers, and the world design is among the most beautiful ever seen in an open-world game. Even with some predictable moments toward the end and a few structural similarities to its predecessor, the overall experience is extraordinary.

Ghost of Yotei is another sequel in the vein of modern Sony titles. While keeping the core foundation intact, the developers made this new entry far richer and more varied than its predecessor. Comparing Atsu and Jin directly doesn’t make much sense — they’re just too different. Personally, I preferred Jin, but the fierce Onryō, with the stubbornness and boldness of a honey badger, turned out to be an interesting character as well.

Ghost of Yotei is a refined and visually stunning sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, favoring evolution over reinvention. Atsu’s revenge-driven story and her mastery of diverse weapon styles deliver fluid, impactful combat that feels both elegant and brutal.

I love Ghost of Yōtei. I adore the classic mold of Atsu’s revenge tale - it’s the kind of story for which “formulaic” is more compliment than criticism. I appreciate how rich a toybox has been provided in its combat. I give it immense credit for the transformative way it uses passive enhancements to so strongly influence a player’s active playstyle...It’s a beautiful production full of mechanically enriching treats that can make a player feel like the sports car of assassins. Seriously, when is Sucker Punch going to make a John Wick game? All told, I’d say this is some of the sleekest, tastiest action I’ve seen from the big budget space in a long, long time.

Excelling in its intuitive exploration of an open world, Ghost of Yōtei gives you the freedom to explore a Japan of stunning landscapes and secrets to discover. Thus, we find two protagonists: the warrior Atsu and the land of Ezo itself, which perfectly suits a story that's as much about revenge as it is about homecoming.

Ghost of Yotei is a gorgeous, polished samurai adventure that builds on Ghost of Tsushima’s formula with satisfying combat, organic exploration, and a personal, albeit average revenge-driven story. While it refines the open-world experience beautifully, it doesn’t take bold risks, making it feel more like a reimagined chapter than a true leap forward. Still, its atmosphere, design, and narrative make it a must-play for PS5 owners.

Ghost of Yōtei isn’t a full blown sequel, but I would consider it more of an “evolution” of Ghost of Tsushima’s foundation. It improves on a good bit of Tsushima’s framework to make it more engaging and even more fun, which is an impressive achievement. It’s not a huge improvement, because it’s hard to improve on something that was already so solid the first time, but it is exactly what you’d ask for as a successor. A new region of Japan, a new protagonist with an interesting background, kickass combat, and an overall complete package. Whether Yōtei will get an expansion or extra content outside of the already announced “Legends” mode, I have no idea, but as it stands, Ghost of Yōtei is a great experience deserving of your undivided attention, especially if you enjoyed Jin Sakai’s journey in Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch have done it again and released a powerhouse of the PS5’s roster.

Ghost of Yōtei is a visually stunning and immersive open-world experience with satisfying combat, and an emotionally resonant narrative. While the game's secondary content and open-world structure can be repetitive, it carefully balances beauty and brutality, offering a memorable journey through feudal Japan. Ghost of Yotei doesn't take many risks, but it has the advantage of being built on a fantastic foundation. Ghost of Yotei proves that most games deserve a sequel. The bones were there with Tsushima, but Sucker Punch has improved every area that was lacking. All the characters have depth and personality, including the villains, climbing feels better, missions are more varied and have worthwhile stories, it explores the indigenous Ainu people, their traditions and customs, and the impact Japan’s wars had on them, and the performances from the cast are excellent in Japanese and English (Erika Ishii oozes cool, and I’d go as far as to say this is Noshir Dalal’s best performance ever). Yotei is a massive step up and easily Sucker Punch’s best game yet.

In Atsu, we have a haunted protagonist, someone trapped between two states of being. On one hand, the warrior who wishes only to feel the splash of blood upon her face as her blade finds its home in the heart of her enemies. On the other, the young girl who cannot help but wonder who she would get to be if the demons and the flames had never devoured her family on that faithful night. Perhaps, somewhere in the tale of the onryō, there is room for both.

The Ghost is just a mask; what matters is who's behind it.

Ghost of Yōtei is pure cinematic brilliance, and Sucker Punch Productions deserves to be commended once more for knocking it out of the park and, in some ways, topping its predecessor. Ghost of Yōtei is a love letter to feudal Japan, its contradictions, its aesthetic rigor, and the fantasy that has inspired generations. It is not just a competent sequel, it proves that Sucker Punch's formula has room to grow and mature. The transition to Hokkaido gives it its own identity, both because of the colder and more isolated landscape and because of the cultural weight of the protagonist Atsu, whose personal journey changes but never loses relevance amid the visual spectacle. The evolution of combat is one of the great triumphs: refined, varied, visceral, and always demanding, it is the spice of a world that breathes life and that you will want to explore to the limit, full of interesting characters and arcs that contribute to a narrative mechanism that, with a little more audacity, would live forever in our hearts.

Ghost of Yōtei is a masterful lesson in refining an established formula, demonstrating how a new theme can lead to a cascade of improvements that elevate an already beloved concept to new heights. Sucker Punch has not only retained the best elements of Tsushima, but has also boldly broken new ground, taking the experience to a new level. The central conflict shifts from Jin Sakai's internal struggle for honour and cunning to Atsus' personal quest for revenge and her potential healing. I felt that this thematic shift is the driving force behind all of the game's profound mechanical innovations. The Western theme runs like a thread through every aspect of the gameplay, from the bounty hunter system to the non-linear narrative. It kept me hooked until the very end. Truly a revenge story with enormous gravitational pull.

You can’t really knock a game for being iterative when it both builds on and refines the brilliance of the original. Ghost of Yōtei makes returning to Sucker Punch’s Japan a thrill, delivering a memorable ride. Atsu’s journey may start from a familiar revenge tale, but it constantly finds ways to surprise. Brutal, visceral, and impossible to ignore, it’s one of the PlayStation 5’s standout experiences. A must-play for fans, though some may feel a little déjà vu creeping in.

While Ghost of Yotei doesn't fundamentally revolutionize the already proven formula of Ghost of Tsushima, its sequel definitely perfects it in every aspect. Atsu's thirst for revenge, at first glance quite conventional, will take us on a magnificent journey through the Ezo region, as well as a moving quest of redemption for our heroine. Whether in the pleasantly immersive exploration of the open world, in a masterfully staged story or in a well-crafted and diverse action-infiltration gameplay, we are treated with a very generous adventure that constantly renews itself to keep us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. The PS5 has a new major exclusive here, which clearly overshadows Assassin's Creed Shadows, its illustrious big brother, and even other games of the same genre. Sucker Punch thus blesses us once again with a beautiful odyssey in feudal Japan, worthy of the great Japanese cinema from which it draws inspiration, and deserves the most poetic of haiku with a soothing shamisen tune in the background.

Ghost of Yōtei is just one of the best PS5 games so far and even better than its predecessor. The varied combat and stealth mechanics are fun. The open world feels much more open and organic than in Ghost of Tsushima. Ghost of Yotei is everything fans of the previous game from Sucker Punch’s series could have wished for: a more of the same built upon a mature, expansive, and brilliantly written narrative — not only in the main missions but also in the side quests. The combat system offers a variety of weapons and fighting styles that bring freshness to the gameplay, though it’s a system that requires some getting used to and won’t appeal to everyone. The graphics, gameplay style, and overall quality are on par with a triple-A title of the kind we haven’t seen in years, so we gladly welcome this production, confident that it will soon become a classic.

Ghost of Yotei delivers a visually breathtaking world, fierce combat, and an emotional revenge story that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Despite some familiar beats and minor camera issues, it stands tall as one of the PS5’s must-play action epics.

Ghost of Yotei is a visually stunning game, with exciting and addictive gameplay, varied and challenging missions — improving on basically everything that was already pretty good in Ghost of Tsushima. To be perfect, though, I wish that Atsu was ruthless until the end of her journey instead of looking for some kind of redemption.

Building on its predecessor in all the right ways, Ghost of Yotei is an incredible sequel that makes you the ruler of your experience. Player freedom drives its open world, letting you craft the type of game you want to play. With improved combat, a better story, and outstanding use of PS5 features, Sucker Punch has outdone itself and created a follow-up for the ages. Ghost of Yotei is comfortably its greatest work to date.

Ghost of Yotei is a game of great beauty and great violence, its disparate parts weaved together in a sweeping, lush narrative about the transformative power of revenge. This is a journey that treads in the footsteps of Ghost of Tsushima, while charting its own course, telling a winding tale about a warrior-ghost who wanders a harsh, unforgiving world in search of solace.

Ghost of Yotei feels a little like the PS5 exclusive we’ve been waiting for, and a truly great sequel - though not quite a perfect one. Its visceral, bloody combat, wonderful world and map, sense of exploration, and gripping epic tale are true highlights. And while there are a few imperfections, and it really does wear the influence of its predecessor boldly on its sleeve, it's an adventure and landscape to sink hours and hours of enjoyment into.

Game performance is excellent too.

Ghost of Yotei is an excellent game, worthy of its predecessor, it even surpasses it in its writing! The character of Atsu is formidable and this young woman, touching and strong at the same time, draws us into her vendetta, in the heart of a Japan of crazy elegance. The universe created by Sucker Punch offers a violent and poetic vision, between bloody fights with devilishly effective gameplay and charming traditions... A subtle blend for a sumptuous journey, at the foot of Mount Yotei. The formula does not revolutionize anything but it goes further than that of Ghost of Tsushima and that gives something sublime.

Ghost of Yōtei preserves enough of the spirit to make it clear why it’s the successor to Tsushima, while introducing enough new ideas to make it unmissable. With breathtaking visuals, top-tier style and combat, it stands as Sucker Punch’s most polished experience to date.

At its core, Ghost of Yotei is another tale of revenge, but it’s the way it frames that theme—through Atsu’s humanity, the land of Ezo, and the people within it—that makes the experience truly worthwhile.

Ghost of Yotei is a melancholic journey that intertwines a thirst for vengeance with a sense of contemplation. It does not revolutionize the genre, but it marks a strong return for single-player experiences on PlayStation, striking where it matters: among the memories of the protagonist Atsu, which tell tragedies without the need for words. It is a game that rewards those who seek atmosphere, subdued moods, and the still open wounds in the hearts of those who fight only for themselves. Perhaps it does not shatter the giants of tradition, but it finds its voice among silences and duels, offering the player not just revenge, but a catharsis with a bitter taste of truth.

An atmospheric journey into premodern Japan that offers impressive visuals and intense combat, but falls short with its open world design.
  80. With Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch further emphasizes the strengths of its predecessor and delivers a fantastic game with brand new additions. We explore Ezo and engage in fantastic boss battles with new weapons and abilities. In some places, the game even manages to capture a sense of dread. Considering the good performance and excellent graphics, the lack of repetitive open-world events and some minor flaws are easy to overlook. While the game currently promises countless hours (45 hours for me) with its single-player story and world, it also promises much more with its multiplayer mode, slated for release in 2026.

Ghost of Yōtei is a worthy sequel to the already excellent Ghost of Tsushima, building upon that game's foundation with an equally interesting (albeit quite different) plot and select improvements to combat and open world exploration. While Ghost of Yotei isn't the great game it appears to be in its first few hours, it's an excellent action-adventure game that marks a nice evolution from Ghost of Tsushima. Here, Sucker Punch studio takes a nice - even a very nice - step forward in terms of open world, notably thanks to a central play area that offers sumptuous panoramas and an impressive draw distance, and a constant generosity in terms of secondary activities. Even after 50 hours, we were still surprised by unexpected encounters and events, giving the feeling of evolving in an organic, living world. A sure bet on PS5.

While Ghost of Yotei shares similarities with the first game, it's a production that builds significantly upon it. The game has a Western vibe, which is particularly noticeable in the bounty hunting missions. While it may lack depth in character development and presentation, it's a very good action game overall, with its fun gameplay, sword fighting, and graphics. If you liked the first game, I can say you'll love this one.

After more than 60 hours spent on the lands of Hokkaido, juggling main missions, side quests, and endless exploration, the answer isn’t simple. Sucker Punch plays on two fronts: technical conservatism and artistic boldness. Of course, the game isn’t perfect: some mechanics feel recycled, climbing remains archaic, stealth can be frustrating, and technically, you can tell the engine has its limits. But Ghost of Yotei more than makes up for these flaws with its world, storytelling, atmosphere, and that rare feeling of truly losing yourself in a dreamed-up, poetic, and simultaneously violent version of feudal Japan. In short, Ghost of Yotei isn’t a revolution, nor a breathtaking technical leap. It’s a respectful sequel, sometimes conservative, yet one that manages to elevate the original experience through its artistic direction, immersion, and narrative. It’s a game to be savored as much as played, one that delights, moves, and, above all, reminds us why we love virtual feudal Japan: for its landscapes, its mood, and those unforgettable moments when you truly feel like a part of the story.

While I don't think Ghost of Yotei quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, it is another worthwhile trip to a lawless Japan. Ghost of Yotei is a gorgeous, bigger-and-better follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima that refines combat, expands exploration, and delivers one of the most stunning worlds in gaming. Its diverse weapon system and shrine-based progression make every fight and discovery meaningful. However, the side quests are less memorable, the map can feel overcrowded, and UI nags break immersion. It’s an evolution rather than a revolution — but a highly polished and captivating one that fans and newcomers alike shouldn’t miss.

Ghost of Yotei offers a vast world that compels us to explore, thanks to its incredible visual appeal and a series of simple ideas that effectively ward off the taint of repetitiveness, despite some elements of the offering feeling a bit stuck in the past. Slashing with the Yari, mowing down enemies with dual blades: it's easy to feel like a warrior thirsty for revenge in Sucker Punch's game, which displays genuine attention to all the "important" details and boasts some truly addictive combat. There are stories worth discovering on the map, as well as situations worth experiencing, but unfortunately the plot on which Atsu's journey of revenge is based lacked the courage to dare and some appropriate attention to character development. In any case, a stop in Ezo is a must for fans of Jin Sakai, and in general, anyone looking for a gripping and evocative adventure would do well to take on the role of Onryo.

Five years ago, Ghost of Tsushima pushed the PS4 to its limits and left a lasting impression with its historically inspired open-world epic. Visually, narratively, and in terms of gameplay, this interactive love letter to the work of director Akira Kurosawa, the grand master of the samurai genre, was so good that it rightly earned the status of “classic.” There were some flaws—perhaps inherent to the open-world genre—but the result was an open-world game that you'll happily lose yourself in for 100 hours. For Ghost of Yotei, all of the above still holds true, but you'll want to put 200 hours into it. It sounds disrespectful, but Ghost of Yotei is a sequel by the book and therefore, in essence, more Ghost of Tsushima, but ‘better’: with more weapons, more variety of enemies, and even more beautiful grass – because what an incredibly beautiful game this is.

Ghost of Yotei is more of what made Ghost of Tsushima so compelling; terrific combat, a memorable protagonist, and a gorgeous world playing host to it all. Ghost of Yōtei is a great evolution by the foundation that Sucker Punch built with Ghost of Tsushima. While the story feels like a retread of every other revenge story of the past few years, complete with the same frustrating pitfalls, the characters, new gameplay mechanics, and extra content make for a game that will hook you from beginning to end. I can't wait to see how Sucker Punch continues to expand the game and the franchise in new and exciting ways.

Ghost of Yōtei builds on the visual grandeur and combat refinement of its predecessor, delivering a breathtaking open world and satisfying swordplay, but falters with safe mission design and an underwhelming start. While Atsu’s journey eventually reveals emotional depth, the narrative pacing and familiar AAA formula may leave some players uninspired...Engaging combat mechanics, spectacular sights, and gripping character moments are somewhat undermined by indistinct quantity, dull objective listings, and by-the-books storytelling. If you've been seeking a new open-world adventure, you could do far worse. At its heart, Ghost of Yōtei is an undeniable beauty to behold, yet too cautious to let its splendor shine.

Ghost Of Yōtei is a good game with a great story: the new Miike and Watanabe modes are particularly delightful. It’s just a shame it rests on open-world mechanics that, at this point, are really straining. None of these tropes ever fall below polished competence but they dull the luster of the world Sucker Punch has so carefully crafted. Still, among games that rely on this formula, Yōtei marks itself as one of the best.

Easily one of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous games I’ve ever played in my life, Ghost of Yotei is a sequel that makes a strong first impression, and makes a handful of meaningful improvements over its predecessor. But as a sequel, it lacks a bit of the novelty that Ghost of Tsushima had, and while many elements of Yotei are objectively stronger, just a bit of its shine wears off after a few dozen hours of formulaic open world design.

There’s no better way to put it: Ghost of Yotei is more Ghost of Tsushima. It’s a sequel that sticks closely to what worked in the original game, with an emphasis on its engaging open world and even more stunning visuals. The narrative quality leaves a bit to be desired, and the combat—though more versatile—also has its repetitive moments, but the experience remains one of the best gaming has to offer when it comes to samurai games.

Even with a few shortcomings, Ghost of Yotei is an exceptionally captivating experience. Ghost of Yotei is stunning, with beautiful music and high-quality production on many levels. But the same cannot be said for its content. The story is clumsy, while the open world offers the same unoriginal routine, saved only by the beauty of the landscapes. The gameplay is effective, and the introduction of different weapons adds a touch of variety and strategy to the combat, even if it's not without a few clunky moments. Players who have managed to escape the genre until now should appreciate it more.

We already knew it from the announcement trailer, and playing it for forty hours only confirmed our first impressions: Ghost of Yotei is exactly what everyone expected from a sequel of this scale, backed by a Sony that needs to strongly focus on some of the trademark elements of its biggest works. Sucker Punch doesn’t try to overdo it, doesn’t attempt the path of innovation, and has no intention of straying from those defining aspects that made *Tsushima* a success far beyond the rosiest expectations. Yotei refines the mechanics, increases variety, enhances attention to detail, and better defines certain narrative dynamics. The result is simply a game that works well and does exactly what it’s supposed to: entertain all those players looking for a new open-world, free-roaming action adventure in which to invest a few dozen hours. Clearly, this isn’t the place to look for a new benchmark or that extra something that boldly sets it apart from any other title in the genre, but five years later, anyone who wants to relive the Tsushima experience will feel right at home here, before the crackling of a warm and reassuring fire.

Sucker Punch may be playing it safe, but the fantastic world and effective revenge plot still give Ghost of Yotei its own identity. It's still a series with clear limitations, exemplified by the monotonous mission design and old-fashioned stealth, and it's disappointing that Sucker Punch has not done more to rectify these issues, especially since they also plagued the first game. But it certainly has its qualities: from epic duels to exploration built on curiosity, it serves up both the fantasy of being a vengeful spirit and a flesh-and-blood person with dreams of a better life in an excellent way.

Ghost of Yotei is a very safe sequel to Tsushima. In terms of gameplay, it builds further on what Tsushima already did well. It innovates little in that regard, but it does address every issue I pointed out in my original review of Ghost of Tsushima. On paper, that’s fantastic. Unfortunately, because of its stronger focus on the main character, Ghost of Yotei loses sight of the story of the world around her. Ghost of Yotei matches its predecessor well, but because of its missed storytelling opportunities, it fails to surpass Ghost of Tsushima.

While Ghost of Yotei’s tale of revenge may not cut as deep as its predecessor, Sucker Punch’s blade is still deadly. Although Ghost of Yotei lacks a cohesive and well-executed main story, it makes up for that with its vastly improved combat and world design. It obviously doesn't do anything mind-blowing for the open-world genre, but it refines nearly every aspect that made Tsushima special while carving out its own unique identity. Atsu’s journey delivers both emotional depth and visceral action through her mastery of various weapons, supported by a beautifully crafted world that feels alive without overwhelming you with a boatload of recurring side activities. It’s a love letter to revenge tale media rather than the traditional samurai cinema and players who still adore the gameplay-focused prowess of Sucker Punch—moreover, it's also a reminder that sometimes, a safe sequel can still be satisfying to play.

Sucker Punch has perfectly understood what it means to make a sequel: not to expand for the sake of expanding, but rather to take a step forward in what the Ghost franchise needed. It's still a game where feeling like a samurai is at the heart of everything, where walking through open fields with the wind hitting your face is almost as important as wielding a katana, but now it's accompanied by a more personal and human narrative. I've encountered characters that matter, moments that matter, and combat that, while familiar, gains freshness thanks to the variety of weapons and a more self-aware design. It may not be as visually striking as Tsushima, but there's no doubt that it's still a pictorial marvel. Not all of the side content is interesting, but there's been a noticeable improvement, especially in the character, master, and legend quests. And yes, it's another revenge story, but Atsu manages to make the journey worthwhile. [Recommended]

Sucker Punch had the difficult task of improving on a game some might consider perfect. Not only did they complete the task, but made it look effortless with Ghost of Yotei. The game has all the same great elements that made the original so enjoyable, yet improved on practically every aspect with hardly any flaws.
  3. Sep 25, 2025
I’ve begun to view games like this as the video game equivalent to old Hollywood epics. They are sweeping works of craft that swallow you up in their grandiosity, not so dissimilar from Gone With The Wind. When I look out at a field of bright red flowers contrasting with a sky that’s as blue as the sea, it’s like I’m looking at a Technicolor matte painting. I let go of my sense of time as the pluck of Atsu’s Shamisen pulls me into the 1600s period piece setting. It is rigidly structured in the way an old American epic born from the studio system would be. Ghost of Yōtei, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West – they’re all built for gaming’s own AMC movie marathon 50 years from now.
  4. Sep 25, 2025
None of it arrives with any genuine impact, because genuine impact would get in the way of easing the player toward the next simple set of tasks, to keeping them hooked on the ride. The fact is, you’ve played this game before. You’ll almost certainly wind up playing it again. It’ll pass through you like water—or maybe a gorgeously decorated bowl of gruel—and that’s both Ghost Of Yōtei’s blessing, and its curse.
  5. Sep 25, 2025
Mostly, though, Yōtei smooths out many of the issues of its predecessor, while rearranging itself to sharply focus on its epic tale of revenge. Atsu’s quest starts out violently straightforward, but things naturally become more complicated along the way thanks to some genuinely surprising twists that I won’t spoil for you. That combination of refined gameplay and cinematic story is exactly what PlayStation owners have come to expect, and Ghost of Yōtei shows that Sony can still pull it off. Which is good news, because the pendulum appears to be swinging back to these kinds of games.
