With love as its focus, Fear the Spotlight will do more than scare you.

Fear the Spotlight delivers an incredibly impactful and unsettling story that will linger in my memory long after the credits roll.

I was already a Blumhouse fan and now I’m a Blumhouse Games fan. Fear the Spotlight is an easy recommendation for any retro survival horror fan.

Blumhouse Games is off to a great start with Fear the Spotlight. A creepy PS1-era horror game with a great story, incredible atmosphere, and puzzles that will make you remember those fun times back in the day.

Fear the Spotlight is a fantastic publishing debut for Blumhouse Games and also a triumphant (re)release from Cozy Game Pals. Now with a crucial fleshed-out epilogue that only bolsters the important queer horror story it has to tell, it’s a must-play in the indie horror game scene. Especially for those who love the low-poly style where the film grain and crunchy-looking models only aid in the eerie ’90s/2000s setting provided. I could split hairs for this game’s small issues, but instead, it’s worth focusing on the well-paced and perfectly lengthened experience it is. Fear the Spotlight is an excellently moody horror venture with tactile puzzle-solving and adorable, highly likable characters in Amy and Vivian. It’s the most queer horror lovers will feel represented and seen in a long time, maybe ever. In short, it’s the indie horror event of the year.

Fear the Spotlight from developer Cozy Game Pals and publisher Blumhouse Games is a frightfully fun romp that balances out puzzles and stealth inside of a horror experience. While it won’t redefine the horror genre in gaming with its narrative, it still delivers enough to be entertaining and scary.

Fear the Spotlight delivers a nostalgic, classically-inspired horror game that places story, its sense of place, and the breadcrumb trail of a mystery you pursue ahead of combat while maintaining a true sense of unease throughout. From the moment our trembling hands touched the planchette, we were spirited away on one hell of a thrill ride.

Brilliant in its proposal, Fear the Spotlight is a horror game that combines classic aesthetics with modern controls very well. Its narrative focus and tense atmosphere make everything more cinematic in a work that makes few mistakes, but without staying in the safe zone.

Fear the Spotlight is a brilliant take on survival and psychological horror, instilling a real sense of vulnerability and dread in me — the developers took good lessons from classic titles and made something unique and fascinating. Players who love classic and retro-style survival horror absolutely must check this one out.

Out of all of the retro-style indie games that I've played, Fear the Spotlight is one of the most impressive and I hope to play a sequel.

At the end of the day, what’s even more important than aesthetics and game mechanics is: Did I have fun? And the answer is yes. I had a great time playing Fear the Spotlight. It was a fun, relatively short survival horror game that is great for anyone who wants a retro throwback, or just a plain old fun spooky time. Plus, it’s priced at just $20, so as far as video games go, it’s a relatively cheap investment and is perfect to complete over a single weekend.

Fear the Spotlight may be brief, but thanks to its tense atmosphere, basic but enjoyable stealth and rewarding puzzles, it keeps you glued to the screen from beginning to end. If you do play it, just make sure you don't overlook the unlockable second story, which is perhaps even better than the first.

Fear the Spotlight offers horror movie and video game enthusiasts a pleasant (perhaps too much, considering we’re talking about horror) five-hour experience spent in a simple story that cleverly reinterprets classic tropes with some interesting visual ideas and excellent progression. The aesthetics are a perfect balance between the nostalgia of PlayStation-era titles and modern rendering. Its underlying romanticism, along with combat dynamics that are not quite on point, prevent it from being truly scary. However, it still manages to touch on unsettling themes and disturb with some well-crafted imagery.

The horror element is extremely well done throughout the game, and paves the way for an interesting story as you progress through the game, but things can verge on tedious as the gameplay style does feel very back and forth throughout. Fortunately, with each run lasting just a few hours, it doesn't overstay its welcome, and so comes recommended if you like this era of horror games.

A fun mix of PS1 era horror nostalgia and Life Is Strange style emotional drama, that goes a little too light on the scares but is still a compelling mix of influences.
