Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

For fans of Suikoden, playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was always going to be an emotional experience given Murayama's passing. Thankfully, however, while we continue to mourn the loss of an industry legend, we also get to celebrate his life's work in the best way possible through a remarkable JRPG that retains everything people loved about Suikoden while building upon it to create an incredible end to an equally incredible career. Looking back on my notes as I sat to write this review, I wasn't surprised in the slightest to realize that the vast majority of what I had written down was positive given the immense joy I felt while playing through Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Any faults are minor, so minor to the point where in the grand scheme of things, they matter little and cannot even come close to overshadowing everything this game gets right. Playing through Nowa and his companions' journey feels like a true celebration - a celebration of how incredible JRPGs can be when done right, a celebration of a legend's career, and the celebration of the birth of a new franchise that I cannot wait to see expanded upon for years to come.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a truly incredible homage to old-school JRPGs that will hit the "sweet spot" for nostalgic players with its mechanics, story, and graphics. Additionally, it is an excellent game for new players who want to experience the magic of the predecessors of today's JRPGs.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a worthy title on the JRPG genre and a faithful successor to the Suikoden series, offering an intriguing story with a wide and variate cast of characters alongside a extensive content resulting in plenty of hours of fun to play.

As a fan of Suikoden, I couldn’t be much happier with how this turned out. I’ve been waiting for something like Suikoden to come along again since childhood, but I never dreamed I’d have to wait for the original creator to come back to see it happen. I just wish Yoshitaka Murayama were here to read the praise he deserves for carving out such a unique, inimitable identity in the genre.

Eiyuden Chonricle: Hundred Heroes is exactly what Suikoden fans have been asking for. Fans of old-school JRPGs or games about recurring characters shouldn't hesitate to check it out.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a love letter to RPGs. It has an excellent story and characters, a challenging and fun combat system, as well as a vast amount of content to explore, all wrapped up in a package with great graphics and soundtrack. It is a must-have title for fans of the genre.

While its retro-inspired graphics charm, technical issues and lack of optimization somewhat tarnish the experience, it remains a must-play for fans of the genre.

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes is a great trip back to the golden era of JRPG and a tribute to all the good things that Suikoden gave us. With nostalgia as its banner, this game manages to overcome its lack of innovation to deliver a great adventure that will take you back to simpler times.

While I think Eiyuden Chronicle has some room for improvement and that more development time would have been even better for it, I appreciate the many original ideas that the experience offers for a genre that is overpopulated, especially in its 2D/2.5D version. However, the foundations for something much bigger are already in place. We'll see if there will be enough gas to keep supporting this project or if it will remain encapsulated as a one hit wonder. My vote for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, then, for all that it represents, with its mix of legacy and timeliness.

Playing through Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was an addictive and wonderful experience. When I stopped playing, I was constantly thinking about the characters, story, and the world-building that Rabbit & Bear has created. The game is very much a love letter to JRPG and Suikoden fans, and while there are a lot of similarities, I personally didn’t find that detracting. After putting more than fifty hours into the game, it reminded me of both the joy of being in one of Murayama’s worlds, and the sadness that he will never pen another game in this series. While there are elements of the game that needed more time in the oven, I cannot deny the happiness I felt every time I booted up the game.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is just what we could expect from the creators of Suikoden. It is a classic JRPG with some room for improvement but it lays the first stone of a new saga that could give us many joys in the future.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is the true spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, capturing what made those games magical and expanding on the premise a hundred-fold. It tells a well-written and verbose tale of courage and endurance, but adherence to some fairly brutal old-school design precepts means it won't appeal to everyone.

On its own, Eiyuden Chronicle is a very successful game, a throwback to the golden age of the genre. However, it is a great risk for both players and itself that it does not offer anything new by swimming in completely guaranteed waters. Especially when you consider that Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is coming out soon.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes teleports us to those classic JRPG games from the 90s including its mechanics, graphics and story. This is a modest project and it is a great title with very outdated mechanics but true fans of the genre will love it.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a robust remembrance of JRPGs from a bygone era. Despite some of the more archaic design elements of that generation seeping through the cracks, this spiritual successor to Suikoden offers a comforting and familiar experience that feels inherently nostalgic. Between engaging characters, a diverse world, alluring combat, and more, Hundred Heroes is proof that this sub-genre is timeless, even at its roots.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes mainly delivers what the developers promised. It's a mostly very classical JRPG experience with beautiful graphics and great music. But while fans of the 90's JRPGs might get anything they love about these classics here, they also get nearly everything, that they might hate about them.

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes delivers an experience tinged with nostalgia, in true homage to Suikoden and its mythical formula. At times too rooted in the past, this production is nonetheless a solid one.

As an aggressively old-school role-playing game, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes suffers in areas like combat, side quest design and balance but makes up for it with the story, extensive cast and strong presentation.

Despite boldly declaring “the JRPG is back” and then doing absolutely nothing new with the genre, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a decent, traditional JRPG that will tickle anyone who adored the classic PlayStation titles of the late nineties. Its modern affordances in visual design and voice acting bring this nostalgic adventure into the present day, but it is let down by sluggish, repetitive combat and some missed opportunities when it comes to utilising its massive roster of characters. Fans of Suikoden will likely already have this pre-ordered — for everyone else, check this out if you’re looking for a nostalgic romp and don’t mind a few speed bumps along the way.

Old players who have grown up with the first two episodes of the Suikoden franchise and backers of the Kickstarter campaign will be the most pleased by Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, and old school JRPG through and through. Divisive game design choices aside, what we have here is a solid effort, but also one that looks too much to the past and much less to the future of the genre.

Although Eiyuden Chronicle manages to capture a certain charm of the 90s, it is inconsistent in many areas. Above all, there is a lack of meaningful comfort functions. As a result, the game struggles to keep up with best of today's JRPGs despite a great deal of passion on display.

What could have been the best strength of Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes is its greatest weakness. With the amount of things to do, types of gameplay available, and sheer number of heroes to recruit, the game feels unfocused and inconsistent. Some of what it does, it does very well, but it doesn't quite overcome the negatives. Those who truly love classic JRPGs like myself will find plenty to feast on, but those who don’t should go Nowa near it.

A trip back in time to the golden second half of the 90s. The combat system, the 2D sprites and the main mechanics create an appeal, embellished by the nostalgic effect, but you'll have to deal with some less positive elements.

A successful restatement of everything that was great about the early Suikoden games but many of its old school affectations will only be excused by existing fans.

Adds so many ingredients to the proverbial pot that ultimately you can’t really taste any of them, resulting in a forgettable dish on an already crowded table. [Issue#41, p.88]
