This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Doominishing returns. The game starts by bombarding me with advertisements for all the live service elements that have been added since the game launched. A downside of playing a game so far after launch is that I had to see a dozen of these before I could start playing. Few publishers understand that a game is the sun of its entire experience. Of you need to push an on-line store, make that on-like store a desirable experience and not a hostage event.

The gameplay itself is more of the Doom reboot. I gave the first Doom reboot a 7/10. Not groundbreaking but fun. This sequel is about the same only with more platforming. Maybe it’s my age. I played the original Doom and a lot of shooters in-between then and now. Maybe it’s the low stakes gameplay of this sequel. It feels like more levels of the original Doom remake. Maybe it’s the rut that Bethesda has been in for the last decade.

The shooting and death animations are fresh. Some of the death animations are a bit comical, like Shadow Warrior 3. Guns look and sound good. Enemies have weak points so you can at least see you are doing damage to them. Arenas are designed to run, jump, and dodge. This isn’t a cover shooter. You can’t slowly plod through this one enemy at a time. Long ago, I rejected the need to git gud. Fortunately, Doom Eternal has a variety of difficulties and accessibility options. These options raises the my score from 6 to 7. The game world is frustrating. We start with Hell on Earth. How intriguing, a Darksiders with guns! But it’s just more hellscapes and gothic fortresses we saw in Doom. There are shades of city streets and subways, but about the time you get the feeling you are on Earth, it’s back to another brutalist hell fortress. The graphics are also lovingly last gen. The go to graphics for hitting 60fps on PS4 and Xbox One was a crisp, cartoony look. This on full display with PS5. At least the enemies look nice and gritty.

All-in-all, Doom Eternal is a good game. It is both saddled with a tired legacy of gameplay and the exhaustive litany of live service and faux RPG elements that plague modern gaming. For some, this will be their first shooter and they will love it. For me, I have to compare Doom Eternal to the greats like Halo 3. It just doesn’t stand up.

Decent game, nice gameplay, level design and fun to play, but when you complete at least 60% of main story - game is start to boring you

While improvements are slight, they’re enough to provide the definitive version of arguably the best Doom yet. What the hell are you waiting for? [Issue#4, p.90]

Doom Eternal is one of the greatest FPS games of all time and this is no less true with the PS5 update. The various visual modes provide a more tailored experience to those wanting to pick between 4K or framerates, while the myriad of updates over the past year have continued to tweak and improve the core experience considerably. If you haven't played it yet, now is the perfect time to jump in.

DOOM Eternal on PS5 quite simply underscores the already lofty calibre of one of the best shooters ever with a delectable coat of visual polish which keeps id Software's PlayStation swansong ripping and tearing among the very best of its genre contemporaries.
