Exploring is very much encouraged. So, you could really create your own adventure. It has been a long time that a game wanted me to keep playing and keep coming back for another run. I'm not sure why anyone would think this is a bad game, but if you want a nice straight forward shooter to play for couple of minutes or a game you can invest hours in. you can can do both with Deathloop. Great game. It's tight and well designed and doesn't overstay its welcome or overdo it's premise. The game gives you space to explore and discover how to break the loop without getting stuck or lost. Overall it bends a ways away from standard gameplay but not so far that a casual gamer will get bored before they've figured out how to play it.

While I understand this game revolves around time-loop mechanics, the repetitive visit to the same areas does feel tiring near the end game. Enemy AI is absolutely bad and its not in the level of Hitman / Dishonored games. With all the build up to the story, the ending of the game is terrible whatever choice you make. Game uses the almost the same set of supernatural powers from Dishonored games and adds the time loop concept, so it isn't very original either. Not a must play game in my opinion. Expand

You're Colt, and you're stuck in a timeloop of living the same day every single day on an island with a rival Assasin that other players can control or AI, and so-called Eternalists (standard mobs) who presumably are there by choice to live forever, and 8 visionaries which act as the game's bosses that you need to study and manipulate so you can kill them all off in a single in-game day to end the loop. There is surprisingly no timers during the actual gameplay so you can take your time to explore each map as long as you need, but you will mostly come to one of the 4 areas during specific times of the day to chase leads to ultimately unlock your knowledge to create a plan to off all the 8 visionaries in a single day.
The environments are jampacked with great visual detail and storytelling through audio tapes that you can find, and notes including computers that the Visionaries chat with each other on that give you information that you can use to your advantage. There are fun guns that feel satisfying to use, as well as powers that are similar to what you had in the Dishonored games such as a teleport and telekenisis like powers or buffs. From killing Visionaries and the rival assasin Julianna you can loot Residuum, a resource which allows you to infuse powers, guns to be able to keep them forever even through timeloops... This allows you to progress your power and allow you to build different loadouts of guns and perks. The combat itself is pretty easy to cheese, and ammo is plentiful, i rarely felt the need to stealth and it's also easy to run away with your blink super power that allows you to get over rooftops with ease, especially after upgrading it. But all in all the game does what it does well, and I am excited for the future of such games involving timeloops.

My God this game is so good, I cannot express in human words how good it is. Let me explain it in a soul-mode, ready?

It is as good as: If you won the lottery and are now a millionaire, made the world become more kind to each other, fixed the climate problem on our planet, took away all poverty on the planet, helped all criminals become happy and not create more problems for us in our world. = That is how good it is.

/Here you play as Colt, stuck in a loop, and to break the loop you decide your going to kill all of the visionarieries.. heres the problem… theres are 4 levels… and 4 times of day.. there are 9 total people to kill… and every day the loop restarts.. basically everything you do in a day is reset as if it never happened, so what youl lbe doing is day by day, morning noon afternoon nd night, finding a new lead, gathering more and mor information so that you can learn their on repeat daily routines, and find the moments where your targets are on the same map at the same time, or find ways to sabotage them for later on… and I loved it.. im so surprised how much I loved this game especially since the hwole point is to play the same 4 levels over and over and over across 12 hours… I though t there is no way Im going to enjoy this. Especially as a backtracking hater.. but I loved it.. here you start with one gun and the ability to double jump, as you go through levels youl lhave to take guns from enemies, you can stealth through this game or go in guns blazing, but you have to be careful, youre only allowed to die twice in a level, if you die a 3rd time the entire day restarts and you lost everything you’ve collected.. you also lose it all at the end of the day, but eventually you do have the ability to collect the games in game currency to be able to infuse your gear and restart each loop with it. But where is all the best gear? Its on your targets.. so you can kill these 9 harcters over and over and over, getting the best weapons in the game, but not only that.. they have abilities oy uxn infuse and take with you, like the teleporting ability from dishonored, you can link enemies together and if you kill one in a link they all die, you can turn invisible, do a force pushl.. the abilities and combinging them with eachother and your weapons make this game so fun.. and as you keep killing these charcters, if you already have that ability oyull gain an upgrade for that ability… its not all huntig and lead finding though theres a charcter called jullianna that’s trying to protect the loop..she is either controlled by a friend, a random person online, or the computer depeneding on your game settings, she can come in at anytime trying to kill you, though you do get some nice rewards if you kill her first.. but you can also just escape if she enters..
Deathloop is a crazy game, it’s a blast at times.. but the game does definitely overstay its welcome a bit.. especially for a gme that expects you to play out the same scenarios over and over and over.. by the end I was just dashing through levels as fast as I could.. no care to explore.. felt no incentive to explore and the game definitely isn’t the best to look at.. how are we in 2021 on new consoles, with a AAA developer in a game where there are only 4 not that big levels.. and it looks like a late ps3 game..
And other tiny gripes but gripes that do exist, are the missions where you can make one small mistake and oyu have to restart the entire loop.. there are no checkpoints here.. so while you can cheese it by closing out the game and loading back in if you die too much or make a wrong choice, its still annoying to have to start the whole level from the beginning
Overall though Deathloop is such a unique game that I ended up loving almost as much as the dishonored series..
    I give Deathloop
    an 8.5/10

It’s a solid seven guys, eight at best if you’re really into the style of it but doesn’t really offer anything we haven’t seen before done better (original Dishonoured is a better game than this). If you’re into the whole time loop thing then I’d check out The Forgotten City… it’s much more compelling to play and the writing is leagues ahead of Deathloop.

This game has literally nothing more to offer than Dishonored games.
It has quite bit less in fact. Less powers, less locations, less interesting "story" and characters.
It also somehow has much worse AI than both Dishonored games, which is baffling.
I'm a big fan of Dishonored and wanted to like this game but it's painfully average, and definitely not worth your time.

Edit: I raised from 6 to 8 because in the end I loved it despite its launch issues which have been mostly fixed. It's a game that sticks with you long after it ends.

I love Arkane's work. Dishonored and its story DLC is arguably my favourite stealth/immersive sim game and I always find myself replaying it. I don't adore Dishonored 2/DOTO nearly as much, but still think they're enjoyable

I love Arkane's work. Dishonored and its story DLC is arguably my favourite stealth/immersive sim game and I always find myself replaying it. I don't adore Dishonored 2/DOTO nearly as much, but still think they're enjoyable experiences in their own right. Prey is fantastic, criminally overlooked, and its DLC, Mooncrash, is possibly even better. It seemed like this game was meant to be the idea of Mooncrash expanded into a full-blown experience. The end result is a game that's *fine*, but far from Arkane's best work IMO.

The concept is cool, but the story and characters end up being just ok. Colt is an entertaining protagonist, but not a whole lot is done with Juliana and a lot of the stuff with her, particularly her relationship with Colt and the loop, falls flat due to the lack of character development/screen time. I also think the three possible endings are all pretty lacklustre, but I doubt narrative is the reason people play Arkane games.

Investigating the eight visionaries and planning a route where you can assassinate all of them to break the loop sounds like a neat concept, but is botched where it counts. Investigating is largely non-linear, suffers from a bit of hand-holding, but is ultimately satisfying. The problem, is that there's only one route you can take to break the loop. Certain visionaries have to be killed in certain places, and at certain times, which kills a lot of potential replay value. There's also no option to go non-lethal with these guys, which I'm sure most won't take issue with, but it's definitely worth mentioning. I know that the idea of violence and murder is core to the theme and narrative but I think a lot of people play these games for player choice.

Speaking of player choice, there's an okay amount of it here, but its extremely lacking in comparison to games like Prey and Dishonored. The biggest offender is that you can only have two of the five powers equipped at any given time, and you can't change this until you move to another district. I'd argue that most players will have Shift on most of the time for traversal's sake, meaning you only have one slot for whichever power you want. Additionally, none of these powers are particularly unique or new. Karnesis is similar to Windblast, just with directional inputs. Nexus works like Domino, just as an AoE projectile now, Shift is Blink, Aether makes you invisible, and Havoc has you deal more damage and take less. For a game that encourages you to 'play your way' it feels needlessly restrictive and watered down because of the lack of unique powers and equipment.

There are some things the game does well, like the Infusion system which allows you to bind items to Colt cross-loop. You really have to think about what to spend your Residuum on between runs, which makes for some great delineation of what to keep and what to chuck Player controlled Juliana invasions are great, incredibly tense and arguably the best part of the game when it works. The initial groove of building up an arsenal of powers and weapons has a strong sense of progression, and you really feel like you learn about the loop alongside Colt. Gun-play feels great overall, weapons are fun to play around with, great soundtrack, sense of style, and theme.

    Random thoughts
    - Weapon rarity feels half-baked and pointless
    - Opening hours/tutorial sections are boring
    - Districts seem big at first, but are quite small, and lacking content
    - AI is way too easy for a game like this, and lacks difficulty options

I think that this game will do wonders for some, and I'm glad that they can enjoy it for what it is. I think if you haven't played Mooncrash, the novelty and concept of the loop will carry a lot of the experience. For me, this just didn't hit, and I'm disappointed because I was really excited for it. I don't think it's bad per se, but not worth it at full price, especially given its technical state which I won't comment on, there's enough of that around already. It's a perfectly fine game, but if you like Arkane game's for their depth, replay value, and player choice, you might want to hold off on "DEATHLOOP" until it's a bit cheaper.

I think if you're looking for a stealth game.. this is a bad pick. The A.I is fine for combat encounters but way too jumpy for sneaking and since you can't save during a level and there are no checkpoints it's too easy for it all to go wrong. Instead it's just way more fun to think of it as an action game with stealth elements. I generally carried a rifle with explosive rounds and used an ability to link enemies so I could take a bunch out at once. I had a ton of fun leaping across rooftops too and feeling like a badass.

There are a few negatives though. The story just isn't very good. Really cool concept but there aren't any proper cutscenes after the opening mission. So most of the story is delivered through dialogue over a radio at the start of a mission or through notes scattered around maps. There's one big thing we learn about some of the characters later on which is revealed in some notes you read and it just didn't leave much of an impact. Plus Colt never justifies his reasons for breaking the loop. He's clearly a talented killer and if i'm having fun then surely he is too. He doesn't seem to have any reason to give up his immortal life as a hunter.

Aside from that there are a couple of glitchy trophies and I think the game could use a mission restart so when you're trying to get different achievements and you mess up then you can easily try the mission again from the start. A checklist would be really cool for keeping track of completionist stuff too.

Overall this game was just a ton of fun. The dishonored series never clicked for me. Prey was incredibly atmospheric and fun but I wasn't in love with the combat. Deathloop is probably my favoritie arkane game now and I'm really excited to see what they release next.

It’s got a dense story (almost too dense!) and an absolute ton of puzzles which I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of. I see lots of complaints about the graphics, and playing on PS5 in 4k I have no idea what the issue is. It’s not going to blow anyone away but I had no issues with them and enjoyed the overall style and design Arkane took with this title. I’d have liked a few more weapons (you get the sniper gun far too late in the game) and having only 2 slots for slabs was frustrating, and meant I pretty much used only Shift and Aether the entire game.

Overall this was a super experience and I’d recommend anyone who found the opening too slow (and stopped playing) to just be patient. And any complaints about gun jamming etc. happens in probably about the first 5% of the game, after which point you’ll never experience it again (as you start building your custom loadout through infusion). Though this game isn’t for everyone, I’d definitely put it as one of my favourite games of the year.

I’m honestly surprised, because I did not expect to have so much fun with Deathloop. It draws some gameplay ideas from Dishonored, but introduces time-related mechanics, offers an intriguing story with interesting characters and has its own unique and coherent style. It’s an original game, full of surprises and addictive, but not necessarily easily digestible for everyone. For me however it’s one of the best titles of 2021. [11/2021, p.22]
