Deathloop is a tour de force in game design.

It is incredible, and requires much planning and thinking. I've had to dust off my old notepad to plan the next stages of my elaborate time heist. On the subject of review bombing, this game may not be for everybody. That's completely fine, but some of the low scores offered should only be reserved for unplayable broken games. That is certainly not the case here.

    Well done, Arkane and Bethesda!

Deathloop, despite its flaws, shows that unique, innovative and quirky big budget gaming experiences are now coming to the new generation of consoles - giving people more reasons to think that now is a good time to upgrade.

It's not an easy game to explain and it will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea but the negative reviews I've read mainly stem from stability issues or a general dislike the genre: that roguelite immersive sim where you need to look for clues instead of being streamlined down a road and looking at icons on a map.

It's an excellent game that truly uses what the medium permits that other mediums don't. It's an investigative game where you have to make sense of the worldas you go through loops. The important thing then is that the world building is very strong and supported by great characters and a solid gameplay as you can expect from an Arkane game.

There's a lot of depth here, enough that after 20h I'm still discovering playstyles and tricks.
Similarly, the level design shines as you play through levels again and again, learning all their secrets, which transform your first fumbling attempts into precise, efficient, ruthless affairs later down the line.
Then that same depth translates into the invasion multiplayer where all the knowledge and skills you've acquired are pushed to their limits in a game of cat and mouse. Just remember you can go in offline mode if you want to take a break from that.

Special mention to the art direction, music and voice acting of the game which are all top of the line and make immersing yourself in this a joy.

Its main issues come from performance and UI.
On PC, though I've not had any really poor experiences, I do get some noticeable framerate drops in certain parts of each level. They don't really impact gameplay but it's not enjoyable nonetheless.
As for the UI, the lack of an in-mission inventory to see what you've already collected and the pretty messy Loadout screen in between missions take some getting used to.

To conclude: Deathloop is an excellent game for what it aims to be, but it's not a genre that is hugely popular or accessible so it's perfectly normal not to enjoy it, but if you do, oh boy are you in for a treat. Easily my GOTY so far. At least give the OST a listen.

A lot of reviews have likened it to hitman, but I think that does a disservice to IO interactive's stealth game, as Deathloop doesn't have even nearly as many options when it comes to approaching combat and assassinations. While hitman will offer you a wide variety of ways to approach a situation, deathloop generally gives you 4 at most. You can run in shooting or stealth kill the enemy, and SOME enemies will allow you to pull off a special kill, such as fiddling with something in the environment, however these situations are unfortunately few and far between. The other option is of course to do something to cause the Visionary to move elsewhere so you can pull of multiple kills in a single time frame.

The game is always teasing its final loop where the player has to kill all 7 visionaries in one day using what they've learnt up to that point to get the visionaries all together. This final loop however is let down by the use of waypoints, the game tells the player step by step how to complete this final loop which takes away a lot of the sense of reward for pulling it off. Compare this to a timeloop game such as Outerwilds where the player learns how to finish the game by playing rather than being walked through it, Deathloop doesn't feel even nearly as rewarding to learn or complete.

The Julianna is also a mechanic that sounds great in theory but falls short in practice. The idea is you have a cat and mouse chase with an online invader, and you must kill the player or turn of the satellite and escape. I can see what Arkane were going for with this mechanic, as I had one experience where this played out super interesting and felt tense and rewarding. However almost every single other time I was invaded I killed the invader super quickly, or they camped by the satellite and killed me 3 times in quick succession with a shotgun to the back. With a bit of balancing this mechanic could be as fun as they intended, but as of right now it feels more infuriating than exciting to be invaded.

It's been mentioned by almost everyone that the AI in this game is not up to scratch and its absolutely true, everything that can be said about the AI that can be said has been said, but its worth noting that IGN giving this game a 10/10 with the current level of AI is absolute insanity.

Some things the game does get right though are the environments, the voice acting, and most of all the gameplay. Its the gameplay that really holds the game up, warping around with shift, turning invisible, linking a large group of enemies to take them all out quickly never really gets boring. The Sparta kick is a fun addition and the stealth does feel satisfying. One thing I will mention with the gameplay is it never feels like theres enough range in weaponry. The game in total has about 7 guns, which while they can be pretty heavily customised to feel unique to you never really feels like enough. You get given a machete in the first 10 minutes and I was excited to upgrade or switch it out for another melee weapon, but the game never offers one. The customisation almost makes up for it, but it would've been nice to have a bit more of a range.

So yeah all in all, the game never really manages to lives up to its lofty ideas, but its world, characters, and core gameplay make it worth playing, even if you buy it a little later down the line when its on sale and the AI is fixed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having come from pc gaming to a ps5, the FOV and lack of an FOV slider that is present on other ps5 games is the only frustrating thing. It takes a minute to get used to it, and it's a LOT of systems, "quests" and the day part system treating 4 levels like 16, it's VERY over whelming. But when it clicks, it clicks like a helicopter seatbelt. It's fantastic if you don't mind just exploring and looking for your objective. There is a definitive way to best the game, but there are optional ways to kill the visionaries early or in a different order to trigger different events. Its not the most complicated part of the clock but that cog fits well. It's fantastic in derailing the player and telling them to figure it out.

It is VERY over hyped. The beginning being so confusing turned me away a lot, and the very underwhelming ending felt like it didn't pay off to grind the same day part or level over and over again to chip away at a certain quest line. But in the middle, there is a decent game to just get lost in and have some fun. Wait for a sale

It’s all set up and premise and no execution. It’s like sitting on the porcelain throne anticipating a massive log and instead only producing a few airy farts and a couple of incidental nuggets. You ate that Chile cheese omelet covered in salsa and your bowels are giving you every indication that they are ready to unleash a kraken of a turd sufficient to clog even the most resilient of toilets, and instead find yourself unsatisfied, unfulfilled, and depressed that your morning glory has failed you.

The most obvious comparison here is the dishonored series, but it’s little more than surface level. The dishonored games were remarkable and were great because they were better than the sun of their parts...the story was fast paced and engaging, the characters memorable, and the world a carefully crafted sandbox allowing for any and every style one may desire. Death loop has none of those things, doesn’t offer anything new, and what it does offer falls short of the games from which these elemtents are lifted.

There’s fun to be had, but it’s maybe 15 hours and will not give you anything near the value that the dishonored series did. So yourself a favor and play those instead.

The thought of starting over again with each death in a “loop” is a concept I originally found intriguing, but wasn’t completely sold on. I didn’t want the game to turn into a boring grindfest that felt impossible to progress in, but thankfully that isn’t how the game functions at all. Progression actually feels meaningful, and with residium (the in-game currency), players can choose to reawaken with certain weapons and abilities they find throughout the game. This actually gives players a decent amount of build customization, and allows for players to approach situations in ways that they want to. The implementation of Julianna is also a unique game mechanic not too dissimilar to how Dark Souls multiplayer works. Another real player can invade your game as a rival assassin named Julianna, and you need to kill her to rid her from your world. Seeing the invasion message always gets me sitting up, and these invasions have been the highlights of my time playing the game so far. Uncovering the real truth and all the secrets throughout the game are engaging, and you can go about these “quests” in whatever order you wish. Despite this freedom, the game is quite small, and ultimately how you beat the game is somewhat linear. This game’s combat and guns feel responsive with a PS5 controller, and the creativity with Colt, the protagonists, unique abilities feels endless. For example I once killed a target by teleporting over a large fall and then swapped places with them, forcing them to fall to their death. Despite its positives, Deathloop does have some glaring negatives. The biggest negative by far is how stupid the A.I. is. You could literally shoot an enemy dead who is standing next to another enemy, and if that enemy doesn’t directly turn to face their dead partner, they won’t even notice. This problem is especially glaring if you play the game stealthily like I do. Another problem I have is that the ability “blink” is way too overpowered. It functions similar to Dishonored’s teleport ability, and it allows for you to teleport short distances. You are given two ability slots, and despite the 8 unique abilities that the game offers, I have still found no reason to not use “blink” as one of the spots. You are actually handicapping yourself by not equipping this ability. Despite its flaws, Deathloop serves as a surprisingly engaging and fun experience in a year where most games have been delayed. This is really refreshing because often in Immersive Sims you are silently encouraged to find a playstyle and stick to it. In Deathloop you are completely free to try any approach you want because even if it doesn't go to plan you'll have another shot the next day. Throw in the random invasions from Juliana and every loop feels unique.

The story is fun and engaging, however the ending feels rushed, leaving you wishing there had been a little more time spent wrapping things up. There are a few bugs, most notably a menu lockup that can happen (I experienced it twice during my playthrough). When this happens during a run you will lose all progress on the current map (the game only saves between maps). This was a little frustrating, but it's something I'm sure will be fixed soon.

As a big single-player fps fan, this game is a bunch of fun, with one big letdown that drags the score down from a 9 or 10 out of 10 game to a solid 8/10. If you like yourself some BioShock, Halo or any other fps single-player game (heard its a lot like dishonored also from arkane, which I haven't personally played) then death loop is definitely worthwhile for £50 GBP or less.

You play as Colt, like yourself, Colt doesn't know what is going on. Waking up on a deserted beach in the middle of the polar sea, with no recollection of who he is, Colt goes looking for answers.
Exploring the colorful isle of Blackreef never feels like a chore, every loop has meaning whether it's to collect information of your target's schedule or to get a better weapon, you never feel like you are stuck. You have 8 main targets called the visionaries. They are spread throughout the isle in four different time periods. You must find out about the lives of the targets and gather them as close as possible to be able to attempt the perfect murder spree in one perfect loop. One of the visionaries, Juliana Blake, doesn't stand still waiting in one part of the isle. While you are hunting the visionaries she is hunting you, instead of an NPC invading you, it's a player. This gives a layer of tension to the game, never knowing when a Juliana is going to appear to ruin your party crashing. Killing visionaries will grant you unique powers, from teleporting to increased strength, they all feel powerful and can be used in unique builds. Invading a visionary's domains can feel overwhelming, from stealth gameplay to going in through the front door guns blazing, it never feels like there is a wrong option.

Arkane created a new standard for storytelling in games, its diverging styles of gameplay, alive world-building, and intriguing mystery, make for one of the best games of the year.

    10/10 masterpiece.

Especially as a backtracking hater.. but I loved it.. here you start with one gun and the ability to double jump, as you go through levels youl lhave to take guns from enemies, you can stealth through this game or go in guns blazing, but you have to be careful, youre only allowed to die twice in a level, if you die a 3rd time the entire day restarts and you lost everything you’ve collected.. you also lose it all at the end of the day, but eventually you do have the ability to collect the games in game currency to be able to infuse your gear and restart each loop with it. But where is all the best gear? Its on your targets.. so you can kill these 9 harcters over and over and over, getting the best weapons in the game, but not only that.. they have abilities oy uxn infuse and take with you, like the teleporting ability from dishonored, you can link enemies together and if you kill one in a link they all die, you can turn invisible, do a force pushl.. the abilities and combinging them with eachother and your weapons make this game so fun.. and as you keep killing these charcters, if you already have that ability oyull gain an upgrade for that ability… its not all huntig and lead finding though theres a charcter called jullianna that’s trying to protect the loop..she is either controlled by a friend, a random person online, or the computer depeneding on your game settings, she can come in at anytime trying to kill you, though you do get some nice rewards if you kill her first.. but you can also just escape if she enters..
Deathloop is a crazy game, it’s a blast at times.. but the game does definitely overstay its welcome a bit.. especially for a gme that expects you to play out the same scenarios over and over and over.. by the end I was just dashing through levels as fast as I could.. no care to explore.. felt no incentive to explore and the game definitely isn’t the best to look at.. how are we in 2021 on new consoles, with a AAA developer in a game where there are only 4 not that big levels.. and it looks like a late ps3 game..
And other tiny gripes but gripes that do exist, are the missions where you can make one small mistake and oyu have to restart the entire loop.. there are no checkpoints here.. so while you can cheese it by closing out the game and loading back in if you die too much or make a wrong choice, its still annoying to have to start the whole level from the beginning
Overall though Deathloop is such a unique game that I ended up loving almost as much as the dishonored series..
    I give Deathloop
    an 8.5/10

It’s time loop mechanics worked well and the story moved along at a good speed, but it’s with Deathloops AI where the game starts to fall apart. After the first couple hours I wondered whether I was playing the same game as the critics who gave it a 10. A 10 for this game is just plain ridiculous. As are the 0's that Xbox and PS fanboys are bloating it with because they're upset.

The story and premise of the game are the best part. It's an interesting idea that is held back in my opinion by poor, retro looking graphics, mediocre gameplay and a very bad ending.

Towards the end of the game I just wanted it to be over because I wasn't having fun anymore. There are some areas that I enjoyed but the characters aren't really fleshed out the game just lacks polish. After seeing the reviews from the "experts" I expected a lot more. Mediocre game and moderately disappointing.

Deathloop offers well-designed stealth levels under the core gameplay of Roguelike. At the same time, the variety of weapons and special powers also support the exciting combat. Julianna's "invasion" adds the uncertainty of the game, but may also spoil the player's experience.

I’m honestly surprised, because I did not expect to have so much fun with Deathloop. It draws some gameplay ideas from Dishonored, but introduces time-related mechanics, offers an intriguing story with interesting characters and has its own unique and coherent style. It’s an original game, full of surprises and addictive, but not necessarily easily digestible for everyone. For me however it’s one of the best titles of 2021. [11/2021, p.22]

Deathloop is Arkane at its best, combining its system-driven immersive-sim gameplay with a unique and fascinating story set-up. Excellent presentation and style, along with fantastic dialogue and character performances makes Deathloop one of the most innovative games in years and a valuable PS5 exclusive.
