You work your way up the crime ladder by completing lots of different missions. You have gang and terf wars. You have to take control of terf and also defend it. You do this by hiring a crew and gunning down waves of enemies. Some are harder than others. You have to fund all your operations by completing various kinds of heists. They can be robbing shopping malls, armoured trucks, crashed convoys, rob gang warehouses etc. And the maps change so it's not the same each time you play. For example, the map layout can change. Security cameras, NPC's, ladders and things can appear in different locations each time you play. Or you can start from a different place on the map, and your getaway van will also appear at different parts of the map. It's a good way of changing it up a bit and adding a challenge. Then once you complete these smaller heists you use the money to fund bigger heists in the story missions, hire crew, pay off enemy gangs from attacking your terf for a set time, upgrade your office etc. The best part is the big story heists. These a good size and are fun to play. You can tackle them all guns blazing or go down the stealth road, it's up to you. You can go straight in to these heists or buy intel and equipment to make them play out differently. They are good fun. Some of the crew you come across have their own story missions. They can take you all over the world and are a bit Call Of Duty like in nature. You can choose to play these, or you can just leave them to expire. Some of the missions were really fun. You can also upgrade your crew and select thier weapon loadouts. It's set in the early 90s and has a Hollywood cast from the 90s, so it feels very nostalgic if you were around in that time and love a good 90s action film. Robbing a tech shop and they have VHS recorders and tapes and scary leads for sale on the shelves have me nostalgic tingles. The cast is great but some of the voice acting is pretty bad, which is surprising considering the cast is made up of Hollywood actors. It's as if the developers got Michael Madsen to say stuff without any context sometimes. Kim Basinger is very good in it. The Story is a bit random and you should just leave your brain at the door and enjoy a bit of mindless early 90s action. The soundtrack is pretty good. It has songs from the early 90s in there from Bon Jovi and Freestyle MCs and others. Graphically it's not the best and not the worst. It reminds me of somewhere between Far Cry 5 and 6 graphically. Gunplay feels nice and meaty. When you shoot the enemy the weapons feel impactful and enemy's spray blood everywhere. Challenge wise it can be very challenging. It can overwhelm you with loads of enemies from different angles and some are tougher than others. You have normal cops and gang members, SWAT, heavy SWAT with armour and shields, snipers, and heavy gang members. Nothing is too bullet sponge, I think it's just about right, they can just overwhelm you at times. And if you die in the main missions you start over on day 1 again. So, yeah. There is a lot of variety here and lots to see and do. Some of the smaller prep work like taking and defending territories can get a bit stale from time to time, but the heists are all pretty fun to play. It's fun working out the best ways to complete and them and the maps changing each time add variety and replayability to the game. Expand

Crime Boss: Rockay City surprised us. As unheralded as it was, this is a great game that does stealth and action equally well. The setting, the missions and the vibe of it felt a bit like playing a really good Xbox 360 game. And that means something now that most games are open-world borefests.

All in all, you have a really bad shooter with even worse acting, non-existent mission variations, bugs that have been around for over half a year, and a ton of other things that will put you off ever starting this game again - you could say that it's “criminally bad” (pun intended).

Lacklustre if played solo, but if you can reliably scrape together a squad of friends for online play the budget asking price isn’t a complete robbery. [Issue#30, p.88]
