Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is an ideal opportunity for gamers who may have missed the original release, but it’s also worth another playthrough for those who enjoyed the 2013 version. While the game developed by Starbreeze remains a classic and has aged decently well, Avantgarden’s remake improves upon it in nearly every way to bring the delightful, sometimes emotional odyssey to modern platforms.

AvantGarden Games has done a simple and effective job of bringing back an intense video game. Strengthened by a beautiful story, born from the pen of Joses Fares, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a work of art that explores the most intimate human sides, enhancing the bond that binds one brother to another. Its greatness lies precisely in its simplicity. An excellent remake of an incredible video game.

Every beat of this game still lands, and the developer was right not to fix what wasn't broken in the first place, developing and refining the definitive version of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake takes the presentation and soundtrack of a real classic to a contemporary level and also optimizes controls and enemy behavior. The 2-player co-op mode is a nice addition which, strictly speaking, already existed in the 2019 Switch version. If you already know the latter or have already played through the original, you are paying primarily for a nice technology upgrade. However, if you never experienced the original, the remake is undoubtedly your best option at the moment.

As clever and wonderfully bittersweet as it ever was, now with a drop-in and -out co-op option. A great way to discover or rediscover this indie classic. [Issue#39, p.95]

When Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was released during an explosion of indie games, the influence of the Uncharted series was clear. Yet it was the poignant story, about siblings who work closely together, that was so crushingly startling. With enhanced sound and more detailed graphics, the remake tells the same effective tale.

While the original Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons had a charming artstyle, the graphical update is a vast improvement, the attention to detail adding depth to the already mysterious world. The narrative and innovative control system remain in place, making this the perfect on-boarding for new and returning players. The addition of local co-op allows you to team up and play the game together, although I strongly recommend playing the game single player in order to achieve the full impact of the experience. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake sticks close to its roots and remains the pinnacle of game mechanics being used to convey a story.

The original Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is one of the greatest indie games of all time. With its poignant story, varied gameplay and unique mechanics, it is truly a special title. The Remake perfectly captures these aspects and faithfully modernizes the aesthetics. Although the core experience is preserved, there aren’t enough improvements or extras to encourage returning players, however, it is a must for anyone who missed the initial release.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is another example of how remasters should be put together. Unlike the latest Tomb Raider remaster, the loving tale of the two brothers aged well and remained just as impressive as it was in 2013, serving a tale full of emotion. It is a brilliant story that combined with simple gameplay makes it accessible also to those who do not play video games on a regular basis. It is an experience that is worth playing through for the first time or relieving it with the updated graphics.

Was this remake necessary? Probably not, because the original still looks and plays pretty well. However, it’s available and definitely worth your attention, as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a simple yet beautiful game with a poignant finale.

The heart-wrenching tale of two brothers continues to captivate even after so many years. Enhanced by a new graphical presentation and a still-functional, simple, and timeless gameplay, the main attraction remains the story, or more precisely, the style of its narration, masterfully conveyed through the body language of various characters and the breathtaking environment. A beautiful and ageless bite-sized experience, perfect for one or two sittings, now with full-fledged cooperation, although the original innovative control concept has somewhat faded from the game.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was hardly in need of a remake. However, replaying the game more than a decade after its debut, where every inch has been beautifully crafted anew, has been a delightful experience, and one we can finally share with a second player. We just wish there was more of it.

Playing the original, which still holds up well, with today's graphic standards probably didn't even occur to many of us, but it felt nice to be reunited with the brothers.

From its incredible story and how well it tells it to its wonderfully realized setting and more, all of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons' biggest strengths are present and accounted for in the remake. Given how faithful of a recreation it is though, those who own the original will likely wonder if the remake is worth a purchase.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is everything we hoped it would be. Avantgarden and 505 Games gave us a remake created in Unreal Engine 5 that is completely faithful to the story, which remains intact. With a wonderful soundtrack, a new cooperative mode and breathtaking scenarios, the story of these brothers is worth reliving.
  19. The Brothers remake doesn’t have all of the changes we would hope for, but it is still a remake of an incredible game. It’s clear that deep thought has gone into each of the small interactions that fill the world, with the personality of each brother shining strongly. Without saying a word, Brothers tells you so much, and that beautiful story is still intact. People may want to pick this one up if only for the two-player mode and commentary from creator Josef Fares himself, but it’s hard to call it the definitive version.

Brothers isn't perfect. Its blend of serious tone and incomprehensible delivery doesn't fully work, and its characters (especially a female character introduced late in the game) are more archetypes than believable people. However, the remake's improved presentation of the original's unique gameplay make it well worth experiencing. Even if, like me, you're a decade late to the party.

This is still a great adventure experience except now it uses graphics that befits its entertaining gameplay. This is a remake that is as pure as the term can get, it's not doing a whole lot to differ from the original product, or even adding much that's worth harping on about beyond its visual and performance enhancements. If you've never played this game before, I would suggest picking this title up as the story is fantastic albeit very sad, but if you have already played the original game, there's not too many reasons to necessitate returning to it here.

You can tell it was not necessary, and you'd probably be right, but Brothers remake is a love letter to one of the most heartwarming titles of the last decade, and this version is the one new players should look to if they're willing to give this game a try.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake retells the exciting story of the brothers, maintaining the basic concepts of the original game, but improving its graphics and sound considerably. However, technical problems go against these improvements, making some corrections necessary for the game to reach its full potential.

While personally I don’t think Brother: A Tale of Two Sons Remake feels like an essential release, it’s still a welcome and faithful reimagining. Its gentle pace and dark themes are sure to inspire many to spend a few hours traipsing across its beautiful magical land, even if I believe that those dark themes don’t ultimately crystallise into something truly cohesive. The visual makeover is at least profound and breathes new life into the title, and this is certainly the definitive way to experience the tragic yet heartwarming tale of our two suffering siblings.

With almost 0 changes in gameplay and structure, Brothers' remake manages to offer a greater spectacle thanks to Unreal Engine 5, although it's not without technical problems at launch, as a remarkable stuttering and clipping, at least on PS5. If you played it back in the day you will find little new, and the extras and new features are a bit lazy.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a solid retread that occasionally gets in its own way. The graphical and musical overhauls are spectacular, and the emotional heft of the story is intact, but the industry has left the title behind in a lot of ways. The control scheme is still pretty unique, and a rousing success in single-player, but the co-op mode comes with an asterisk. While it's a welcome accessibility inclusion, it fundamentally alters the experience, and not really for the better. Throw in some technical woes and you’re left with a remake that doesn't quite feel up to snuff in a modern setting. However, the core game was incredible for its time, and ultimately remains a moving tale in this refreshed version.

This retelling of the 2013 game stays largely faithful to the source material and adds some valuable improvements. If you’ve already experienced the original I think you can sit this one out; but newcomers should experience this remake at least once.

Short, graphically pretty, playful and narrative but completely irrelevant. Competently done as a remake, but that's just not enough.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake feels like a missed opportunity to build on the unique concept of the original game. It could have been expanded with new scenes and situations to provide fresh new challenges and keep players on their toes. Given the success of A Way Out and It Takes Two, more work could have been done to make its co-op mode much more intuitive and enticing, too. As it is, it’s successful in beautifying the original game but nothing more, unfortunately.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a strictly visual revision of the original, retaining all the playable elements of Starbreeze's 2013 work that dazzled us. [Recommended]
