A perfect, charming platformer that will delight players throughout the entire journey. This is an easy recommendation and a must-play!

While it currently enjoys a wealth of mature, cinematic titles, PlayStation has been crying out for a fresh, colourful mascot platformer, and Astro Bot ticks most of those boxes – at the very least, Team Asobi proves there are multiple ways to accessorise the chilly veneer of white plastic. As a 30-something gamer with rent to pay, few things inspire childlike glee in me, but Astro Bot manages it again and again. Whether it’s diving into an underwater level and pretending I’m exploring an aquarium from the other side of the glass, or just the simple tactile joy of Astro Bot’s little feet tapa-tapa-ing across the DualSense, I’m feeling a wide-eyed wonder that I thought I’d grown out of. His Rescue Mission was a few games back, but it’s safe to say that Astro Bot has definitely resuscitated PlayStation’s long-absent sense of fun. [Issue#46, p.80]

Take away the branding and there remains a core of irrepressible imagination, the fuel of so many great games, that is anything but robotic. [Issue#403, p.92]

If we do have one point of criticism, it is that there is no option to play the game in pairs. Games with such a co-op option are scarce these days, but it could have completed the experience completely. Still, as far as we are concerned, this space adventure deserves all the stars. All in all, Astro Bot is a very fun, accessible game. In fact, we dare say more: in this game, Astro rivals Mario as a platform king. Sorry, Nintendo.

It’s more than just a big, beautiful celebration of PlayStation gaming over the last 30 years or so, but an absolute triumph of just straight-up, uncompromised, guileless fun in video games in general.

It comes within touching distance of true greats such as Super Mario Odyssey thanks to nuanced controls and visual creativity, though perhaps Nintendo’s work retains the edge.

Astro Bot is one of the best games I’ve played, period. A jubilant little adventure that dedicates itself fully to making an audience happy. For a neurodivergent player the visuals, sounds, and DualShock textures are indescribably satisfying. The accessible design makes it perfect for both children and adults. It’s a wonderful mascot platformer, the likes of which I’ve severely missed, and it’s the most tasteful way a game company has ever patted itself on the back...For once, the pats are well earned.

The amount of dedication and passion that’s gone into Astro Bot is obvious in every pixel of every texture; there’s not a single bug, glitch, or texture issue to be seen. Its controls are easy to understand and incredibly tight, with Astro moving exactly how you need him to. In the 15 hours I’ve spent so far in finishing its campaign and going back to replay levels to pick up missing Bots, I’ve not encountered a single moment of frustration. It’s beautifully designed both in its self-contained levels and those dedicated to much-loved, Sony-exclusive franchises.

Play Has No Limits has been PS5's campaign motto since the beginning, and Astro Bot truly defines it. With a tremendous amount of improvements over its predecessor, Astro Bot pushes the lines out wide when it comes to creativity and offers a satisfying experience to any gamer, regardless of age or interests.

From start to finish, from top to bottom, no matter how you look at it, Astro Bot is simply sublime. A genuine treat the likes of which we haven’t seen from any first-party PlayStation studio in far too long. Not only has Sony found a new franchise that absolutely needs to continue with new iterations every few years, but in Astro Bot, the company now has a new icon it can rely on for generations to come.

I was still itching for more just to keep lapping up the myriad nostalgic references scattered everywhere. Astro Botis a product of passion, playfulness, and perfectly portioned platforming pastimes. Team ASOBI has hit it out of the park with this one and quite possibly landed a Game of the Year grand slam.

Team Asobi didn't even need this to make a good game, as is evidenced by its excellent platforming, level design and gameplay mechanics, but they took advantage of the platform's rich legacy to transform this experience into something memorable.

More than anything, my time with Astro Bot is dominated by one word: surprise. There were moments that had my jaw on the floor, moments I cackled with glee, and even one or two where may have shed a tear. Astro Bot is everything that I love about video games — the potential they have to cause wonder and excitement, self-reflection, and, most importantly, fun.

Astro Bot is the first 3D platformer from Sony that we got in many years, it is one of my favorite experiences with the Playstation 5, be it the use of the DualSense features or Astro's world as a whole and I hope Sony will make more games like this.

Especially if you have children with whom you can pass the controller back and forth, Astro Bot is one of the feel-good games of the year. And if you don't have any offspring, this will let out your inner child with ease. Astro Bot, then: a game that was well worth sending a chrome Sackboy back through time for.

Actually, it’s one of the best platformers I’ve ever played, – and, as a child of the 90s, I truly have played a tonne of them. PlayStation has been lacking a great homegrown family-friendly game since LittleBigPlanet, and Astro Bot is a worthy inheritor of that series’ playfully humorous legacy.

A magnificent tour through Sony PlayStation’s history, the franchise – and the Astro Bot character – has enough charm and chops to now launch forward as PlayStation's premier mascot-driven series. Stellar platforming, a mountain of secrets, and a never-ending sense of discovery and adventure, Astro Bot is a new classic. So. Much. Fun.

Just as with Playroom, Astro Bot is a game that absolutely celebrates all things PlayStation, aimed at anyone and everyone who loves this console and the games that have made it what it is. Whether you’re an old timer or a young kid with their first console — or better yet, a combination of the two — the are dozens of hours of fun to be mined here. It’s a fun, easy-going romp through PlayStation history, and absolutely impossible to play without a smile plastered to your face.

To me, the biggest perk Astro Bot has was being able to see my son play and love his time with it so much. He was engulfed in the world immediately and finished the story before I did. He also compared it to Mario Odyssey, which he shares the same love of it as I do. This was a game that continued the Father/Son bonding we have been building in gaming and even came to my rescue on one those difficult challenge levels I mentioned above. Despite the ease of picking the game up, mastering platforming is a whole other challenge and my son was up to the challenge. Seeing him finish the levels I spent 20 minutes trying to pass is one of the coolest nerd dad moments I have had. In short, I cannot boast about this game enough and plan to chat more about it on Pressed For Time in the near future, so stand by. Astro Bot is well worth the price of admission and will be a great gaming option for all ages with the Holidays coming up quickly.

It really feels like the developers thought of everything, and thanks to their efforts, Astro Bot is pure joy in video game form. I went into it with high expectations thanks to Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro's Playroom, and it not only met my expectations, but completely exceeded them. It's the best 3D platformer since Super Mario Odyssey hit the scene in 2017 and will be remembered as an all-time classic of the genre. Everyone with a PS5 should get their hands on this game ASAP, and hopefully, Team Asobi gets to continue making masterpieces.

I’m a firm believer in there being too much of a good thing. So in my first few hours of Astro Bot, I kept thinking, “Can this really be sustained through to the credits without losing its charm?” The answer is a bonafide yes. The reason is nothing ever felt half-baked. Team Asobi brought so much creativity and thoughtfulness to their game, that you can’t help but want to spend more time playing. From the intricate ways, Astro Bot pays its respect to the nearly 30-year-old brand to the music. There wasn’t a minute across my 12-hour playthrough to gain the Platinum Trophy that I wasn’t smiling, humming, or laughing.

Astro Bot is one of the best platformer games ever made. It is a wonderful package that invest everything for the joy of the player. A love letter not only to PlayStation, but for the whole videogame history.

Astro Bot is true perfection. I entered the game hoping it would recreate the same sense of magic that Astro’s Playroom brought to life so wonderfully, but what I instead discovered was a true elevation in every sense. With this release, Astro has firmly cemented his status as an icon of the platforming genre. This is beyond being an entertaining platformer. It’s one of the most carefully considered and impressive games I have ever played. If you’ve grown up with PlayStation always having been a constant in your life, the journey you’re about to embark on will assuredly be the most heartwarming trip down memory lane. Astro Bot is a monumental triumph that I’m not going to stop thinking about for a very, very long time.

When it's all done I'm left with that strange feeling of being very well cared for. I've seen a bunch of wild sights. I've messed around with cool gadgets, used the controller in unusual ways, tilting it, yes, but also blowing into it, trying to read the buried hieroglyphs of its rumble, I've ticked boxes, collected things, unlocked things, nodded at references that make me feel old, or sharp-eyed, or generally in the know. But when I close my eyes I see the tumbling fruit, the hundreds and thousands, the gems stacked so high I can kick through them as if I'm wading through autumn leaves. I think, more than anything, of all the glorious bits and pieces.

There’s no denying that Astro Bot owes a lot to its predecessors, but it still manages to find ways to innovate and make its own mark, from the excellent integration of PlayStation’s history, to the unbelievable Hero Worlds, to the creative new mechanics and power-ups. Add in gorgeous visuals, joyful vibes, near-perfect controls, a terrific soundtrack, and excellent rewards for curiosity and exploration, and you have the makings of something truly special.

Astro Bot only cares about fun, and I genuinely can't think of a single moment it made me wish something had been handled differently, tweaked to be easier, or expanded upon. It's just perfect.

Astro Bot is an excellent, brilliant game, full of good ideas, innovation and magic. It's a love letter to PlayStation but also and above all to video games. Asobi's game knows how to renew itself at every moment and offer something fun and intelligent in its gameplay mechanics. Despite having high expectations for Astro Bot, Team Asobi still found a way to surpass all of my hopes. This isn’t just one of the best games of 2024, it’s one of the best platformers that I have played in the last decade. Those who have a long attachment to PlayStation or just a simple love for games of this genre cannot let Astro Bot pass them by.

Across the 10-15 hours of Astro Bot I gratefully lapped up, I had an immovable grin on my face. I smiled and laughed (unironically) from start to finish—Astro Bot is ridiculously fun and makes gaming fun.

I cannot stress how much is packed in this. I saw cameos I never expected. The nostalgia overload is almost too much at times. I haven’t had this much fun with a game in a long time, and even though I have rolled credits, I am going back to 100% this. Astro’s Playroom was my first Platinum Trophy, Astro Bot will be my second. This game brings me more joy than I expected, and it will be at the top of my favorite games of the year.

Astro Bot may not have the extensive history nor brand recognition comparable to platformers like Mario… yet. Make no mistake, Astro Bot is still no Super Smash Bros-type knockoff. Rather, Sony may finally have their own Mario-caliber mascot, and could perhaps be the spark for more variety in modern gaming outside of Nintendo.

It's really hard to find any compelling reason for anyone to skip on Astro Bot. Sometimes it's easy to forget how fun video games can actually be, and Team ASOBI did a great job reminding us of that, and all the shared joy this industry can bring.

Though I would prefer more open levels in the future, Astro Bot cements itself as PlayStation’s premier platforming series. This game solely brings back the golden era of PlayStation platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. The sheer number of brilliant cameos show the right mix of nostalgia amidst expertly-crafted level design. If you’re looking for the purest form of video game fun but with modern mechanics, this is it.

It’s not a game with a deep and rich narrative. Nor is deep in any particular sense. That’s not a criticism, it’s just that there’s not much to analyse based on how I usually focus on in my reviews. The levels are beautiful, the power-ups add a special layer of gameplay and the boss battles are creative, but the villains are not very memorable, which leaves the title below the best of Donkey Kong, Mario and Crash Bandicoot games.

It is one of a few games you’ll enjoy without stress, pressure and will admire the creativity of Team Asobi.

Astro Bot has accessible gameplay, superb Dualsense implementation, rock-solid tech and so much charm that you can’t help but smile along. It doesn’t want to revolutionize the platformer genre, it just wants you to be happy. And that is a mission it succeeds at with flying colors.

The highest praise I can give Astro Bot is that it genuinely feels like PlayStation has its own Mario now. The gameplay, creativity and charm are competing with Nintendo's powerhouse with wonderful level design and engaging gameplay from start to finish. Only the relatively short runtime is a potential negative, and even that feels like a minor complaint. If you're a longtime PlayStation fan looking for a rush of nostalgia, a parent looking for a good game for their kids, or you just want a darn fun platformer, Astro Bot is a must-play.

As an arcade game, Astro Bot ticks all the right boxes and really challenges the medium but in a good way with its crazy mechanics, sturdy controls and next-gen experience, particularly with the DualSense Controller. As the game delves into the history of PlayStation, there are some fantastic cameos that you will encounter during your adventures that nicely bring its homage all together.

Gameplay is a clear winner here, and you'll even find yourself experimenting with the hyper-calibrated haptic feedback. All in all, Astro Bot offers a dynamic, well-paced game that continually renews itself. There are a few glitches where skills, game sequences and OST use are repeated, but that's just nitpicking. In reality, it's a blast and leaves you wanting more. Astro Bot has a message, one that reminds us of what's essential: have fun, enjoy yourself and love video games. And for that, it's a total success.

Before the PS5 Pro comes out, you're going to become a pro-PS5! A long and unbridled version of Astro's Playroom, the ultimate tribute to the PlayStation planet and the licenses that revolve around it, Astro Bot is an exceptional 3D platform game even if it doesn't innovate much. Beautiful, fluid, varied, perfectly manageable and with a mastered arcade pleasure, it is of exemplary generosity and finish. Team Asobi, by making fun its mantra, leaves the experimental playrooms to join the big league.

The consecration of Nicolas Doucet's team, which still has a slight margin for improvement, effectively leads to the birth of a new star on the PlayStation front, finally giving fans a title that is nothing short of unmissable.

Astro Bot made me smile from beginning to end. A collection of endlessly inventive levels and fantastically fun abilities, it delivers joy in spades, never once becoming even remotely dull or repetitive. And while you don’t need a long history with Sony systems to enjoy it, it is especially a delight for those with a piece of PlayStation in their heart as a treasure trove full of playable nostalgia awaits. Taking the PS5 marketing mantra that “play has no limits” more seriously than you’d expect, Team Asobi has crafted a mascot platformer that goes near enough toe-to-toe with Nintendo's best efforts, and that's about as high a compliment as I can give it.

Astro Bot on PS5 feels like the culmination of every Team Asobi project before it. Given how many mascots Sony has lost over the years (this game's constant cameos certainly reminded me of that!), I'm completely on board with them adopting the little bot as their new face. They've earned it.

Four years ago, Sony introduced the tagline “play has no limits” to advertise the PS5. Astro Bot is the first PlayStation exclusive since then that truly believes in that mission statement.

Astro Bot is an exceptionally successful game in its own right, injecting pure happiness into your body over its 10-15 hours. It's exactly what Sony's console needs right now with its brightly coloured exterior, sharp controls and simple yet varied gameplay. The course for the stars is set, and I'm sure Astro will make it to the top.

The levels overflow with playful details, and its precise controls take full advantage of the DualSense controller. While it occasionally repeats certain elements a bit too much, the rich content packed with references to gaming classics makes it arguably the best 3D platformer on the PS5.

The simply titled Astro Bot is meant to be the cute robot's first significant foray into video games following a 2018 VR exclusive that earned praise but was stuck in its headset-only bubble, and a 2020 pack-in tech demo that hinted at more to come. The beauty of the game, as suggested by its title, is that even players returning for their third Astro adventure will find hours upon hours of new experiences, collectively and magnificently presented as a parade of joyous sights, sounds, and adventures. This is a grand re-opening for Astro Bot, and it surely marks the start of what is destined to be a beloved series shooting for the moon.

AstoBot is a true next-generation platformer that combines top-notch design, graphics, and mechanics with loads of fresh ideas and the traditional values of this somewhat neglected genre. It's the perfect title for both old and new fans of the PlayStation brand and for enthusiasts of high-quality platformer action that, until now, was only possible on systems from another Japanese company.

A somewhat inconsistent difficulty level and checkpoint system fortunately do little to detract from this excellent platforming experience. Astro Bot has all the potential to become PlayStation's permanent mascot, precisely because he embodies everything that makes PlayStation what it is. I sincerely hope he gets that chance, because if this game proves anything, it's that even a longer Astro Bot game isn't long enough. This leaves you wanting more once again.

Every second spent on the game testifies to the enormous skill of the developers and the love they have for the PlayStation universe. A highly enjoyable adventure from start to finish.

Since our hands-on preview, we already knew that Team Asobi was going to have a great adventure in store for us with Astro Bot, but we didn't imagine that the Japanese studio was going to perform so well. More than a real aesthetic for its game, with a captivating, shimmering and warm universe, Astro Bot also surprises with the precision of its gameplay. The fluidity with which the actions follow one another, the surgical playability, this incredible tempo that gives the feeling that everything is possible makes the game absolutely phenomenal in its gameplay. Add to that a new idea at each new level, gadgets that never stop varying the pleasures, environments all different from each other, massive bosses that are a real pleasure to face and we undoubtedly get one of the best 3D platformers of the last ten years. Nintendo had the monopoly on the genre with the quality of its productions until now, but now, we will have to count on Nicolas Doucet and Team Asobi. Now, as we detailed in our paper, Sony must realize that platformers must come back in force in its ecosystem, like in the good old days of PS2 / PS3 with licenses (Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, LocoRocco, Sly Raccoon), which had nevertheless left their mark. Because a talent like that must not disappear...

Continuous and perfectionist, all at the same time. Astro Bot is one of the best 3D platformers of recent years. Hopefully there will be a lot more of this franchise in development.

Besides Nintendo there aren'n many companies developing big-budget platformers. Astro Bot is a part of a dying breed that delivers tons of pure dopamine shots. If games should first and foremost provide fun, then Astro Bot is a Game with a capital G.

Astro Bot, a generally exceptional, imaginative game, features a white, heroic robot with pixelated eyes of blue who waddles tentatively through the universe like a toddler. But Astro is an ardent puzzle-solver, too, in a game that is a mammoth, interactive pop culture history.

If you love PlayStation and its franchises you will absolutely love this game. The levels are unique and you will have a smile on your face the entire game. What a brilliant experience.
