Assassin's Creed Mirage had every ingredient to be an exciting return to the classic AC games, but it is ultimately weighed down by an inconsistent AI that makes stealth gameplay moot, a lackluster combat system and some other aspects that lack polish, including the voice acting.

All told, though, Mirage may very well be my favorite entry in the franchise (after Origins). By focusing on stealth and assassinations-as-puzzles, and keeping the map and missions small but layered, Mirage has shed the bloat of its recent predecessors. The result is a more refined game, from a studio that knows when to exercise restraint, and when to let Basim display his violent talents. Mashallah, I say again. Welcome back, Assassin’s Creed. Frustrating technical hiccups aside, it’s not a bad game. It’s just not special. You go places, you do things, then you fall into conspicuously placed bales of hay. Repeat ad infinitum. Mirage is just what it says on the box: a distant shimmering promise of a good time that quickly evaporates into the reality of a decidedly average experience.
