Edge MagazineApr 18, 2024This disappointing reboot is best left, well, alone. [Issue#397, p.118]

Mar 19, 2024It's not easy to understand what was intended with this edition of Alone in the Dark, as it's not a horror game, let alone a survival one, those basic elements are missing. You're left with a cohesive narrative and a good investigation story.

Mar 19, 2024If you're expect Alone in the Dark (2024) to be the next Resident Evil 2 Remake or Dead Space Remake, you'll be dumbfounded. Yes, the series used to a reference for survival horror, but that's no longer the case. This remake has to many flaws to be really enjoyable. The overall film noir atmosphere, with its doom jazz music, is appealing but underused. And on the other hand, the game suffers from narrative issues, a lack of memorable moments and isn't simply good enough. Finally, it's more like a thriller than a satisfaying survival horror experience.

Mar 19, 2024On the whole, Alone in the Dark is another derivative and bland entry in the survival horror genre. There is some fun to be had exploring Derceto Manor. Combat is bland and generic, but could be somewhat serviceable if it was supporting an interesting narrative. However, the story is mostly non-existent and it fails to do anything with the themes it attempts to look at. To make matters worse, the abundant bugs and glitches present in the game that were not disclosed as known issues muddied any enjoyment I had with this game.

Mar 19, 2024Alone In The Dark needs a few patches before it can be recommended – but even with its technical problems aside, lacklustre combat and predictable pacing make this a tough sell for horror fans.

Mar 19, 2024Great ideas and a storied history are mired in mediocre combat and a disappointingly unpolished delivery.

Mar 19, 2024With its reality-bending story, parade of puzzles, and unwieldy combat, Alone in the Dark is, in some ways, more faithful to some turn-of-the-century horror games than their own revitalized modern remakes. I enjoyed the game's story, setting, and abundant lore, and I felt smart when I'd overcome some of its puzzles. But others proved so obtuse as to be frustrating, and nothing about the combat even climbs to a level I'd call serviceable--it's consistently poor. This isn't Alone in the Dark's first revival attempt, and it's probably not its last, but it isn't the one that will put the series' name in the same breath as the all-time greats it originally helped inspire.

Mar 19, 2024As it stands, it’s very hard - if not impossible - to recommend Alone in the Dark in its current state. Even if you can look beyond the blandness of its design, story, and gameplay, the sheer lack of polish is far too frustrating to warrant spending any money on. It’s a game that, without exaggeration, I had been looking forward to for years. All that’s left now, though, is a sour taste.

Mar 19, 2024The 2024 Alone in the Dark is a deeply flawed game, but at least it's never boring. The first playthrough is fun despite its issues, mostly thanks to the campy story, and exploring Derceto is rewarding, even with the simplistic puzzles. The second playthrough is where it becomes apparent that there isn't much to the game. At best, it's an incredibly basic and generic survival-horror game that's stuck in the past, and at worst, it's buggy and doesn't justify its $60 price tag.

Mar 19, 2024After the excellent surrealist horror of Alan Wake 2, which revelled in its own strangeness while also delivering a clear, compelling story, Alone in the Dark is too staid, too clumsy, and too haphazard to invoke anything other than a shrug. The mystery surrounding Jeremy’s madness isn’t worth putting up with the ponderous unravelling, while the combat and puzzling are mere shadows of Resident Evil 2’s superior design. The curse, it seems, lives on.

Mar 21, 2024There’s a good game lurking somewhere underneath Alone In The Dark, sinking into a swamp of unnecessary extraneous systems and lackluster performances. At the risk of Monday morning quarterbacking, we find ourselves wishing it didn’t have a combat system—or, at least, this combat system—at all, instead focusing solely on investigating the spooky mansion and the occasional jaunt into extradimensional spaces. It’s briskly paced, its puzzles occasionally require an actual modicum of thought, and some of the horror ideas it’s trafficking in carry legitimate power. Don’t expect wading through all the dross to get to the good bits to be anything less than a trip into madness, though.
