Taking place in the vibrant city of Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, Afterlove EP is a unique mix of dating sim, rhythm game and narrative adventure, where players will inhabit Rama, a young musician whose girlfriend Cinta has recently passed away.

Whilst his close friends and bandmates are all determined to help him move on, Rama is languishing in his existence, dwelling on the promises he made to Cinta before they could be fulfilled. But there's one more thing keeping Rama from moving on, and that's Cinta herself, whose voice now lives inside his head.
As he explores the city with Cinta in tow, Rama's choices and interactions will lead to a variety of possible story branches, and ultimately a number of different endings.

Playing Afterlove EP brings the same feeling as reading a slice of life manga on a rainy afternoon to the sound of good lo-fi. Its gameplay is simple, but it brings a narrative surrounded by moments of reflection. Its visual novel vein increases the replay factor and makes us want to try different routes not only to see the ending but also to follow Rama's journey in a process of healing and starting over.

Afterlove EP pulls from a deep emotional well to weave threads of grief, love, hope, resentment, forgiveness, identity and more through a mostly-good mix of choice-driven visual novel and rhythm game. It has some issues with flow, and the rhythm stuff isn't amazing, but stick with it and you'll fall in love with this little slice of Jakarta.

By Afterlove EP’s closing moments, I was happy to take the needle from the vinyl and put the record back in its sleeve. I will file it away in the collection, an imperfect album, with some standout tracks that make the filler worthwhile.

Afterlove EP lacks meaningful gameplay, and its bugs can range from inconvenient to apocalyptic, so it says a lot that it's still worth recommending it to anyone who likes smaller, story-driven games. Make no mistake, the aforementioned issues do drag down the overall experience, but at the end of the day, Afterlove EP is more than the sum of its parts. Its music, charming characters, nuanced portrayal of grief, and beautiful manga-inspired art design are all worth the price of admission. If developer Pikselnesia can hammer out its more troubling bugs, then Afterlove EP has a chance to become an all-timer in the visual novel genre.

The game ultimately has strong, important messages about loss and mental health. Add in some great music and wonderful navigation, and it becomes difficult not to recommend Afterlove EP despite its rough edges.

Afterlove EP is a heartfelt project that looks to explore the theme of loss, grief, and moving forward after the death of a loved one. However, it is marred by some bugs that cause loss of key conversations, and you can get softlocked out from seeing the ending.
