Ziggurat can be completed in just over an hour, but it's unlikely you will stop there. The game is challenging, engaging, and a whole lot of fun, despite its problems.

Luckily Ziggurat arrived at $15 to Playstation 4 to my surprising delight. A high fantasy first person shooter rougelike with aesthetics harkening back to Hexen, Ziggurat adds refinements such as deeper RPG elements, interesting aesthetics and enemies, and better shooting to the formula.

There is not a lot of variety in enemies but they all are very unique in a twisted Alice in Wonderland style. The game features my new favorite enemy of all time the demon carrot which makes me look at salad in totally new ways. Instead of making the enemy AI intelligent, the difficulty is in the mass amount of enemies spawned. Shooting is eased with a generous amount of auto aim to help you feel satisfied shooting down masses of demented creatures. The sense of speed and the amount of circle strafing you will be doing in the game will remind you of Quake and other early first person shooters.

Ziggurat is not without flaws. The Playstation 4 version has lots of slow down, clipping and other visual anomalies. Often small crowded rooms felt unfair when too many enemies are spawned. There is a complete lack of a tutorial or any explanation, other than loading text, on the mechanics of the game. More difficulty options would be welcomed as “Easy” felt too easy and “Normal” often felt way too hard. There are unlockables but it would keep players hooked if it had a Rogue Legacy like progression instead of starting all over every playthrough.

Overall Ziggurat is tons of fun and has a lot of value and replayability for the money. Despite repeatedly failing, I kept wanting to start a new game to see what randomly generated madness will cause me to die this time.

It is a rogue-like dungeon crawler with lots of enemies and weapons. (you can get a gun) Truly recommended to anyone. Full Review »

It's not by any means a story based game or an rpg where you can micromanage stats but as it is, it works. Arcade style fps at it's finest. Very easy for anyone to just pick up and play but can get much harder the higher the difficulty and lots of things to unlock to keep you playing. Characters of different classes, varied magical artifacts and a countless amount of perks. The graphics are quite good for what it is and the sound is about as good.

I would only say that the enemy variation is too limited. The variation of areas is just enough but I feel the random generation could have been a bit better. I also wish local and online co-op was an option, that would truly make this game great. It would be a 10/10 for me if it had at least twice as many enemy types and co-op though that probably sounds greedy.
