Zanki Zero has a decent story. Enough to warrant a full playthrough anyways. The story kept me entertained and motivated to complete the game, but the combat and dungeons were rather subpar. Not everything can be unlocked on a first playthrough, so multiple playthroughs are possible, albeit repetitive.

    Pros:
    -Story
-Multiple difficulties to choose from (can even avoid combat outside of bosses almost entirely).
-Notes ( there are things called notes that you can collect during the game that make the final chapter rather interesting)

    Cons:
-Combat (extremely boring, real time grid based combat)
-Dungeons ( rather lackluster, nothing particularly memorable)
    -Puzzles (mainly boring switches)
-Open end (game sets itself up for a potential sequel, not necessarily a negative for everyone).
-Limited supplies (Certain items are limited per chapter. Because of this you may find yourself having to wait a few chapters till you can upgrade)
-Inventory ( Can be upgraded, but due to the limited supplies, you may be stuck with too many items and not enough space to store them till you can upgrade)

Overall I'd recommend renting the game, or buying it at a discount. It is a decent game with a good story hindered by terrible combat and dungeons.

Weird RPG with an anime-style mystery story that drags you in if you are susceptible. The combat system seems derived from games like mystery dungeon or Legend of Grimrock. You take a step, the enemy takes a step, that type of thing. The aging mechanic is weird AF but it adds a unique aspect which is appreciated. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and it's not like the writing is goingWeird RPG with an anime-style mystery story that drags you in if you are susceptible. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and it's not like the writing is going to win any awards, but the typical anime storytelling where they plop you in an insane situation and then dripfeed you information to add suspense and mystery is alive and well - if you are into that, then this game is worth it.
Actually more people should play this game because it is just so memorable. A bizarre and interesting experience that never gets too frustrating and which has lots of nice plot twists and so on.

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning has a riveting and intriguing story; it’s a shame then that the rest of the game feels like a series of afterthoughts thrown in at random intervals in the game’s development, and both the story and gameplay feel like they stop the other getting much momentum.

Even with its glaring flaws, no one could accuse Zanki Zero of lacking ideas. All the characters are constantly reborn clones, and their past (very brief) lives significantly impact what they do in their next lives. Plus, even though the storyline does nothing for me, it’s rare to see a game tackling themes like this head on, so I’m sure that should count for something.

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning is a bit of a disaster. It looks nice on its surface, but the initially-promising setup soon devolves into complete drudgery thanks to inferior dungeon crawling, poor combat and a cast I had no empathy for whatsoever. My interest in the overall mystery got snuffed out long before it was solved.
